Inverurie and Ellon

Although our outreach in Ellon has now stopped, we were able to help 5 people while we were there and one guy has now been at Sunnybrae for over 2 months.

For now, we are continuing on with Inverurie despite there not being many people coming onto the bus.

Celebrate Recovery Team

A major new innovative initiative we did this summer was to design and purchase three pavement signs. These signs also have leaflet holders on the side. Whenever we take the bus out we take these signs with us and place them around about the area where the bus is parked. There is a dry/wipe area at the bottom of the sign that we are able to update each trip by writing in where the bus is located. At the end of the day, we pick up the signs, count how many leaflets have been taken and take them back onboard the bus back to the centre. These have proved to have been an excellent investment. Lots of leaflets have been taken and it provides an opportunity for people to get information who for whatever reason are unable or do not wish to pop on the outreach bus.

In June of this year we were delighted to have the help of a Celebrate Recovery team from Florida. Members of the team came out on the bus to Banff and went out on the streets of Ellon & Inverurie speaking to people and giving out flyers. Their help in Inverurie was particularly helpful as it was the first time the bus started to go to the centre of Inverurie.

Football Outreach

During the summer months we facilitated and organized football every Thursday night in Banff. Although it was primarily meant for people coming along to the outreach bus, news soon spread and others came along as well. It was primarily for those either in recovery or affected by substance misuse problems. The great thing with the football was that both the lads and the girls were able to play together.

Such was the enthusiasm for this that we started a team, which it was decided, would be called Banff Crew. We had two ‘proper’ games against the Solid Rock Café. We were grateful for the use of the minibus from Teen Challenge Sunnybrae and 21 people comprising of the team and supporters drove to an away game at the astro turf in Fraserburgh and the Banff Crew lost 4-0. It was a brilliant evening and sandwiches and light refreshments were provided afterwards at the Solid Rock Café. We later had a return game at the Banff astro turf where again Banff Crew managed to score this time but were still defeated 7-4.

Not all ‘Good News’ I’m sure that we would all rather read about good and positive things within a newsletter or blog. However, the reality is that we have to deal with the good and the bad. Sometimes we just don’t know how long we have to be able to help anyone. This picture represents a fun time that was had by all on the bus that particular day. The 16 year old boy, with the bandage on his arm, was staying in homeless accommodation and had been on the bus a couple of times before. Two weeks after this photo was taken he was out at the beach with friends at 2.30am in the morning and drowned in the North Sea.

Meet two amazing volunteers Evelyn Morrison continues to be such a blessing to us. She started volunteering with us just over a year ago now and helps us with the Banff outreach. She also has a job as a Marie Curie nurse helping people who have a life-limiting illness. Sometimes she comes to us after just a few hours sleep following a grueling night shift. One of the unique ways that Evelyn has been able to help is by drawing alongside the ladies that come on the bus and helping them learn or improve on knitting and crochet skills. Evelyn also brings along home bakes and fresh fruit, which is

appreciated by all!

Roger Henderson is from Banff and came onto the bus a few years ago looking for help. He has now completed the Teen Challenge residential program and is doing staff training. He drives the outreach bus and is an important member of the outreach team. Roger was baptized in September this year.

We have recently started to take the bus out to Aberchirder and Turriff. Aberdeenshire Council very kindly gave us permission to park the bus in excellent locations; the main square in Aberchircher and in the car park behind Tescos. We are very grateful of the help of Master’s Commission (Aberdeen) who helped up leaflet these areas. Aberchirder (Foggie) is only a small place but 6 people came out the bus as a result of a press release.

Turriff & Aberchirder (Foggie)

We continue to take lads out on the outreach bus who are at an appropriate stage of their recovery program. This is not only extremely beneficial for their own self-confidence but it enables anyone who comes on the bus to see and hear how things could be if help is sought after.

“We can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”
