TACTICS, STRATEGY, AND WEAPONS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR Saturday 29 March2.00 pmBAE Systems TheatreFree, but bookings are essential

Before 1914 most military commentators and theorists expected the next war to be very short, and most likely won by the side that fired the first shot. The stalemate of trench warfare took almost everyone by surprise. The approach to battle underwent a radical change in the four years of the war, until 1918 when the British army, with the Australian Corps at the forefront of many of the most important battles, was able to push the German lines back. This talk will examine how military tactics and the application of firepower developed from the Somme to the Hundred Days Offensive.
