INSIDE OUT: My Story from Peter TreeWith such a wonderful name, Peter Tree must have felt destined tofollow the career he chose, that of cabinet maker.A youth spent visiting the Lincolnshire boatyard where his familykept boats was, he thinks, probably responsible for his love ofwood.“I loved the smell of the wood particularly,” he remembers. His relationship with artsNK goes far enough back that he cannotreally remember when it began, but he does remembers that thevillage bench in Osbournby was probably his first commission withartsNK.“Since then, I’ve done various projects with them, including work-ing in the Nettles and working on the Zygote Festival exhibition.”The Family Tree project at Stapleford he found very appealing whenthe idea was first suggested to him:“I loved the idea of all the connections which this ‘family’ tree rep-resented; my own daughter actually went to school with the daugh-
ter of the man who owned the tree.”Since the felling of the tree (see Take Part Jan/ Feb 2014), groups of people from Stapleford have work-shopped with Peter, trying their hand at carving and turning. He has been impressed:“They have produced pieces of an excellent standard,” he remarks, “including decorative items, housesigns and various pieces of turned wood, including a rolling pin which won a prize at the Bassinghamshow!”His aim is that each household in Stapleford should possess an item formed from the wood of the tree. From part of the main trunk of the tree, Peter will carve a bench for the village, using the tree’s branchesto help form the legs. He hopes that this will be unveiled towards the end of the year.“The Stapleford Family Tree Project has given me the opportunity to work with some wonderful peopleand pass on some of my skills in a very worthwhile way. It would be wonderful to think that this woodworking legacy might remain in Stapleford after the project has finished.”Read the full interview at:www.artsnk.org/taking-part/inside-out-my-story-from-peter-tree

TURNING ANSWERS INTO ACTIONS: Villages Consultation ProgrammeThe NK Arts Partnership village consultation has revealed some veryinteresting statistics.Consultations were undertaken across three villages: Ruskington,Billinghay and Witham St Hughs, with artsNK offering the villagers a‘buffet’ of taster activities, followed up with a questionnaire, theresults of which will help to inform future programmes.Of those attending, more than three times as many were female asmale. There were representatives from all age groups, with mostattendees falling within the 25 to 65+ age group, since most atten-dees came with other family members. An overwhelming number of participants recorded the view that they
would like to see more of these kinds of activities in their areas. When asked what kinds of activities participants would like to see offered, greatest in popularity werefamily based activities (73%), followed by activities for children (60%).There was 100% support in Billinghay and Ruskington for local delivery of arts and cultural activities, bothcommunities also unanimously agreeing that such activities brought communities together. Again, per-centage responses well into the 90s were recorded to questions asking whether such activities helpeddevelop a sense of pride in where residents lived, helped people feel better about themselves and helpedpeople to be fit and healthy. For a more detailed analysis of the project statistics, visit:www.artsnk.org/taking-part/turning-answers-into-actions-villages-consultation-programme
