All About Cars

2013 Toyota Avalon: Sculpted, refined and powerful

Redesigned to add younger sedan purchasers to its Baby Boomer buyers, Toyota has built an all-new 4th-Gen-eration Avalon for 2013. The all-new 2013 Avalon shifts its generational appeal with more emotional styling, in-creased performance, up-graded luxury refinements and the latest advances in technology and infotain-ment.

Avalon’s elegant and ath-letic design incorporates a longer flowing roofline than the last generation, to create a sleek side silhouette with a lower vehicle beltline to sug-gest a sense of motion with a road holding stance. Its chis-eled shoulder line sculpted into side sheet metal starts over the front wheels and creates a strong, fluid body side design cue adding to its athletic stance, and its new front fascia, wide-mouth lower grille, hood channels and narrow headlamp lenses invoke a confident demean-or up front, while the rear is concise with LED taillamps extending onto the trunk lid and connected with a chrome strip.

The front-wheel drive mid-size sits on a 111-inch wheelbase that accommo-dates a length of 195.2 inch-es, width of 72.2 inches and a height of 57.5 inches. Ava-lon’s ground clearance is 5.5 inches and curb weight is

a solid 3461 lbs. Compared to the 2012 model, the new Avalon offers more compact and athletic exterior dimen-sions without sacrificing in-terior room. Overall height has been reduced by 0.98 inches, while the overhangs have been reduced by 0.59 inches at the front and 1.77 inches at the rear. Width has been reduced by 1.29 inches and vehicle tread has been increased by 0.39 inches at the front and 0.59 inches at the rear to widen the wheel placement underneath for better road grip.

Gas and Hybrid VersionsAvailable in straight gas-

powered versions and a hy-brid, my test Avalon was a gas vehicle in its upscale Limited trim. My test Avalon powered up with a powerful, all-aluminum 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to a conven-tional six-speed automatic transmission. The Avalon Hybrid is equipped with a modified version of the 2.5-liter Hybrid Synergy Drive system that also propels the Camry Hybrid. The 3.5-li-ter V-6 features Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) that optimizes the intake and exhaust valve vents to increase engine performance across the en-tire rev range, and produces 268 horsepower 248 lbs.-ft. of torque while achieving an EPA rating of 21 city/31 hwy. My week of testing yielded a mixed-use average of 25.5mpg. It is worth not-ing that the Hybrid version has gained a rating of (40 city/39 hwy).

But the 3.5’s track and highway ability dwarfs the Hybrid’s performance. The

Hybrid sprints a zero-to-60mph dash in about 8.2 seconds, according to the manufacturer, and my real-world dash in the 3.5 was completed in 6.7 seconds, with a quarter mile accom-plished in 15.2 seconds.

An improved suspen-sion — MacPherson strut front suspension with sta-bilizer bar and a Dual link MacPherson strut rear sus-pension with stabilizer bar – provides a soft, smooth ex-perience, though steering is vague and bodyroll is readily apparent.

Tech-filled CabinWith seating capacity for

five, Avalon affords a snug 38.5 inches of front head-room and 37.9 inches in row two; an accommodating 42.1 inches of leg room in row one and a comfortable 39.2 inches in the second seats and shoulder room of 58.2 and 56.9.

Avalon’s cabin combines high technology and crafts-manship with an artistic level of sculpted surfaces. Extensive use of soft-touch materials helps enhance the interior’s feeling of quality and comfort. Interior ac-couterments include 10-way power adjustable driv-er’s seat, 8-way passenger seat, pneumatic four-way lumbar support for the driver and two-way lum-bar support for the front passenger. Also onboard are an electric seat heater and seat ventilation sys-tem, three-zone indepen-dent temperature control, 6.1-inch TFT touchscreen that offers audio system operation, Bluetooth com-patibility, premium sound system, Smart Key System that locks and unlocks the front doors and LED back-lighting that helps ensure visibility of the buttons in the dark.

Built for SafetyThe 2013 Avalon unibody is

designed to absorb and effec-tively dissipate frontal, side, and roof impacts to minimize cabin deformity and offer oc-cupants superior protection. Equipped with 10 standard airbags, Avalon safety sys-tems also include Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic alert, back-up camera system, Dynamic Radar Cruise Con-trol, Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake As-sist, and Smart Stop brake-override Technology.

The 2013 Avalon starts at $30,990 for the gas ver-sion in XLE trim, moves to $33,195 for XLE Premium, $35,500 for XLE Touring and as much as $37,230 for the Limited trim. The Hybrid starts at $35,555 for the XLE Premium, $37,250 for XLE Touring and $41,400 for the Limited. My test Avalon Limited gasoline model in Sizzling Crimson Mica with a Black Bordeaux Perforat-ed leather interior started

at $36,435 and added Navi-gation and Premium Audio for $1450 (Voice-activated touch-screen DVD navi-gation system, integrated backup camera display, JBL Synthesis AM/FM 4-disc CD changer with MP3/WMA playback capability, 12 speakers including subwoof-er, SiriusXM Satellite Radio capability with NavTraf-fic, iPod connectivity, and hands-free phone capabil-ity and music streaming via Bluetooth wireless technol-ogy). A rear spoiler added $349, door edge guard added $109, mudguards were $78 and delivery, processing and handling added $795 for a drive-off of $39,216 plus tax and license.

Sexy Scion flagship debuts: FR-S coupeThe Scion FR-S

coupe puts some verve into everyday commutes and looks pricier than its starting retail price.

By ANN M. JOBASSociATed PReSS

The secret is out: You don’t have to be a fanatical driving enthusiast to love Scion’s new-for-2013 FR-S sport coupe.

Yes, the sleek, sexy-looking two door recre-ates affordable rear-wheel drive fun in a small car the way the old Nissan 240Z and Mazda RX-3 did in the 1970s.

B u t t h e F R- S — f o r Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive Sport — grabs at-tention from onlookers no matter who is behind the wheel and even if the car is being driven leisurely. This new model puts some verve into a commute or a trip to the relatives’ house, too.

The FR-S also looks pric-ier, at least on the outside, than its starting retail price of $24,955 with manual transmission and $26,055 with automatic. All models come with a 200-horse-power, naturally aspirated four cylinder.

Perhaps best of all, the smartly handling and well-balanced FR-S is rated above average in predict-ed reliability by Consumer Reports.

Competitors include the 2013 Hyundai Veloster, which has a starting man-ufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destina-tion charge, of $18,225 with manual and $19,475 with dual-clutch transmission that can be operated like an automatic. The base Velo-ster’s four-cylinder engine

produces 138 horsepower, but the upscale 2013 Velo-ster Turbo, with a starting retail price of $22,725 with manual, has 201 horses. All Velosters are front-wheel drive, rather than the rear-wheel drive that many driving enthusiasts prefer.

Meantime, the twin to the FR-S, the rear-wheel drive 2013 Subaru BRZ, has a starting MSRP, includ-ing destination charge, of $26,265 with manual and the same 200-horsepower four cylinder that’s in the Scion.

Toyota and Japanese au-tomaker Subaru worked together to develop the FR-S and BRZ, with Toyota officials doing the styling, while Subaru engineers took care of the chassis and powertrain.

They added Toyota’s di-rect and port fuel-injection system to the 2-liter, box-er four cylinder, where the cylinders are horizontally opposed. Boxer engines are

a hallmark of Subarus, and the new injection improves the power.

The result is a strong four cylinder that has great sounds coming from its chrome-tipped exhaust. There’s decent “oomph” as the car is a lightweight 2,700-plus pounds. But peak torque of 151 foot-pounds doesn’t come on until 6,400 rpm, so the car doesn’t reach 60 miles an hour until some 6.5 sec-onds after launch, accord-ing to estimates.

Still, the six-speed man-ual was a precise, satisfy-ing shifter, and the nimble handling and weight bal-ance of the FR-S go a long way to making the driving experience fun.

T h e e n g i n e s i ts l ow, which Scion officials say gives the FR-S a dynami-cally low center of grav-ity like that of exotic, high-priced sports cars.

This helps explain why the FR-S tester was emi-

nently tossable in curves and corners. There was only a bit of predictable understeer at the limits. There was nary any body tippiness in these maneu-vers, and the FR-S always conveyed a strong, palpa-ble connection to the pave-ment.

The electric power steer-ing was tuned just right and didn’t have any artifi-cial feel to it.

The flip side of these laudable driving character-istics is the plentiful road noise that came through all the time from the 17-inch summer performance tires. It was necessary on the test drive to regularly adjust the radio volume as the FR-S traveled from smooth as-phalt to a rough stone-and-concrete-mix road surface and back again, for example.

Still, even with the low-profile tires and firm body control, the ride in the test FR-S wasn’t punishing.

Indeed, the test car provid-ed a decent ride on uneven city street surfaces. The suspension — MacPherson strut up front and dou-ble wishbone in the rear — worked to reduce the harshness in the ride that might be expected.

The FR-S isn’t bad on fuel, but it’s not a top-per-former as a small car that stretches just 14 feet, from bumper to bumper. The manual transmission mod-el is rated by the federal government at 22 miles per gallon in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway. The test car, which was driven with spirit, none-theless averaged 25 mpg in combined city/highway travel.

But the Veloster Turbo is rated higher at 24/35 mpg with manual. Even a 2013 Mini Cooper S is rated at 26/35 mpg.

Additionally, the FR-S specs sheet says premium gasoline is required, mean-

ing a fillup of the car’s 13.2-gallon tank can cost nearly $50 at today’s prices.

That’s for a car with two minimal back seats — they basically look like shelves and don’t provide much legroom — and two firm, deeply bolstered, cloth front seats.

In the tester, the black, shaped front seats with bright red accents looked like race-car seats and were great at keeping passengers in place.

The other prominent racing accent was silver-colored, aluminum pedal covers that are standard equipment on every FR-S. The steering wheel was covered in leather.

In other areas, though, the FR-S seemed a bit cheap, with flimsy-feel-ing cargo area material and cheaper-looking grained plastic on the dashboard.

This is a bit at odds with the fact the FR-S arrived this year as the flagship of the Scion brand, and it has the highest starting price of any Scion, including the better known, boxy, small-van-like xB.

At l e a s t e ve r y F R- S comes standard with a 300-watt P ioneer au-dio system with iPod and USB connectivity as well as Bluetooth technology for hands-free phone calling.

Standard safety equip-ment on every FR-S in-cludes electronic stability control, traction control and six air bags.

Drivers don’t get great views out in front of them in traffic, because the FR-S rides low to the ground.

Some 1,100 FR-S models were recalled in June be-cause the owner’s manual gave incorrect information about the front-passenger air bag deployment. Scion mailed a correct owner’s manual insert in the sum-mer, and the recall did not require any physical change to the cars.

Associated Press

This photo provided by Scion shows Scion’s new-for-2013 FR-S sport coupe. the FR-S, for front-engine, rear-wheel drive sport, grabs attention from onlookers even if the car is being driven leisurely.

Winter Driving

Survive the snow and ice with five driving tips

Winter means updat-ing your outerwear to in-clude mittens and a thermal jacket, but before you hit the road, have you also up-dated your winter driving skills? When temperatures drop, roads can become more dangerous, meaning you need to change how you drive.

Steve Magnante, SPEED collector car expert and “On-the-Block” reporter, offers some valuable tips for driving smart and staying safe on the unpredictable roads of winter:

1. Top rule of winter driving: slow down

Winter brings snow, ice and sleet, and these vari-ables change how your ve-hicle grips and moves on the road. Staying alert and slowing down is the first step of safe winter driving, because you never know the exact road conditions or how your car might react to them.

“You’re used to going 55 or 60 (mph) down a stretch of road and forget that on wet or snowy pavement the co-efficient of friction, or the

relationship between your tire and the road, is not the same. So, take 20 percent off your speed, of course until you know it’s safe to drive faster,” suggests Magnante.

2. Keep an eye out for the unknown

First, always be aware of other drivers on the road. “Even though you might be a great driver, sometimes there are people around you that didn’t get the message,” says Magnante. “Keep a nice distance between you, and the people around you, par-ticularly if there are people in front of you because if you are following too close and they have to hit the brakes hard, you could be in trouble.”

Second, watch for virtual-ly invisible black ice, which appears as shiny, black or wet tar on the road, and can leave drivers with little-to-no traction when they hit it. “The best thing is for the

driver to be proactive, slow down, keep an eye out for black ice and keep cars away from you, as best you can,” Magnante says. “Don’t let people push you into their accident.”

3. Test your winter driving skills

To d ay ’s m o d e r n ca rs come with a plethora of safety features that protect passengers, particularly in tough winter environments, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have to adjust how you drive to stay safe. While specialized winter driving courses do exist, they may not be available in some areas. If you can’t take a course, Magnante recom-mends finding an empty, open space (make sure it’s legal), and seeing how your car behaves on winter driv-ing surfaces.

“If you can drive around on snow in a way that you’re going slowly, but you can

cut the wheel hard, brake hard, you can learn some lessons about what it is to be driving on snow in a place where you can’t hurt your-self or your car, like behind a Walmart parking lot,” says Magnante.

4. Navigate ice and snow with caution

If you live in an area that gets a lot of ice or pack snow and it’s al lowed, studded snow tires are a worthy investment. “They a re n ’ t s o m e t h i n g yo u are going to find on every street corner, but if you have a lot of ice where you live, think about getting them, and put them on all

four tires,” Magnante says.If you only encounter ice

periodically during winter, try to drive on the areas of roads that have been treated with sand and salt. If you do slide, he says, “steer into the skid. For example, if the tail of the car is coming out to the right, you want to turn to the right, rather than turn into the left, giving the rear more momentum to swing the car around and spin out.”

5. Use your common sense and be prepared

When it comes to head-ing out on the road, trust your gut feeling and use your common sense. If

the weather conditions are rough and your travels aren’t absolutely necessary, stay home until things im-prove. If you do drive, pack some emergency supplies such as a blanket, boots, insulated mittens, a small shovel and always have your cell charged and ready. Consider storing an ex-tra jug of windshield anti-freeze in the trunk so if you run out, you can refill and keep your windows and vi-sion clear.

Magnante adds, “You may want check your insurance policy and enhance it in ar-eas, especially if your kids are driving the car.”

Winter Driving

Road Safety

Winter and colder tem-peratures are notorious for creating difficult driv-ing conditions that can place strain on drivers and their vehicles. And as the temperature drops this winter, so will your gas mileage.

Colder temperatures mean cold oil, tires and cold air in the carburetor — all factors that reduce gas mileage. With higher prices lingering at the gas pumps, a few fuel-saving tips can help protect your miles per gallon this win-ter.

Warm your car up the right way

Many people believe the myth that you must warm your car up in the winter. The truth is that idling your car actually destroys your MPG and isn’t nec-essary.

Modern cars don’t re-quire a warm-up, even when the temperatures drop below zero, according to AAA. Modern engines, those built since about 1990, have fuel injection systems rather than car-buretors and need no more

than 10 to 30 seconds to get oil moving through the engine properly.

Auto experts recom-mend driving moderately in cold weather to allow the engine and other sys-tems to warm up slowly and reduce wear and tear. So eve n t h o u g h m a ny people choose to warm up their car in the winter for personal comfort or to defrost windows, idling a vehicle for more than even one minute is simply wasting gas.

Get your car winter-ready

From changing the oil to checking the tire pres-sure on a regular basis, improving your winter gas mileage is easier than you might think.

“Your vehicle’s motor oil becomes thicker in colder temperatures, which adds stress to the engine,” says Jim Rossbach, CHS direc-tor of technical services and quality. “Try a thinner grade of oil to keep your engine running smooth-ly in the colder months.” Rossbach recommends using a high-performing

synthetic oil like Cenex Maxtron, which is de-signed to perform well in low temperatures and im-prove fuel economy.

Proper tire inflation can also improve fuel econ-omy by up to 3 percent, according to the U.S. De-partment of Energy. It is important to check tire pressure several times throughout the winter when colder temperature can reduce tire pressure at a rate of one pound per square inch (PSI) for every 10 degrees change.

Lighten the loadExtra weight from cargo

or snow also reduces fuel efficiency. Cleaning out your car and clearing off heavy snow is an easy way to get better gas mileage.

In the past, carrying sandbags in the trunk was a common method for gain-ing more traction and help-ing rear-wheel drive cars perform better on snow and ice. Today, most cars are front-wheel drive with the engine over the front wheels, creating that same grip. Carrying extra weight does not add traction on snow and ice, but simply lowers your fuel economy.

By now, almost everyone knows the dangers of texting or talking on a cellphone while driving. But phones aren’t the only distractions drivers should be aware of. Experts say that anything that draws your attention away from the road can be a potential cause of an ac-cident. That includes ac-tions and situations as in-nocuous as snacking behind the wheel or postponing a bathroom break.

Most adults who drive regularly admit to engag-ing in distracting behaviors while behind the wheel, according to a Harris In-teractive/HealthDay poll. Eighty-six percent eat or drink while driving, 59 per-cent use a hand-held cell-phone, 41 percent fiddle with their GPS device, 37 percent text and 14 percent apply makeup, according to the poll.

“Distracted driving can be deadly driving,” says Ju-lie Lee, vice president and national director of AARP Driver Safety. “Researchers are finding that any type of distraction is risky, not just the ones we typically think of as dangerous, like texting or talking on the phone.”

In fact, a study led by Dr. Peter Snyder, vice presi-dent of research for Lifes-pan, a Rhode Island-based health system, found that a strong urge to urinate can impair your function-ing as effectively as drink-ing alcohol or being sleep deprived. And the effects of hunger, thirst and tired-ness on attention spans and reflex times have been well known for years.

Here are three other po-tentially distracting behav-iors and situations that you might not view as risky:

Eating and/or drinking We all do it, especially

when we’re in a hurry to make an appointment, have skipped a meal or just can’t make it through the rest of the drive without a cup of joe. But eating or drink-ing while driving involves taking at least one hand - and part of your attention - off the wheel. Consider the 2011 case of a woman in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. Police said she hit a guard-rail and flipped her Subaru when she spilled hot coffee during her morning drive. Fortunately, she sustained only minor injuries.

Unrestrained pets Many pet owners think of

their dogs as their children. But while they’re diligent about buckling up the kids and grandkids, they don’t always secure their dogs while in the car. Allow-ing your pet to ride unre-strained - in your lap, be-side you or in the backseat - is dangerous for you and him. A survey by AAA and Kurgo Pet Products found that 65 percent of respon-dents had participated in at least one dog-re-lated distracting behavior while driving, such as pet-ting (52 percent) or allow-ing the dog to sit in their lap (17 percent). Restrain-ing your pet can help mini-mize driver distractions, restrict the pet’s movement in case of a crash, and pro-tect pets from potentially being harmed by inflating airbags.

RubberneckingSlowing down or pulling

over to get a better look at an accident not only dis-plays a lack of tact, it could also cause another acci-dent. If your eyes are on the crash you’re approach-ing - or passing - they’re not on the road ahead of you. As recently as August 2012, police in Greenbelt, Md., cited rubberneck-ing as the probable cause of a double accident that shut down a major high-way during morning rush hour. A Maryland State Po-lice spokesperson told the Greenbelt Patch that police see rubbernecking acci-dents “all the time.”

“Although drivers age 50 and older are less likely to engage in distracting be-haviors like texting or us-ing a hand-held cellphone behind the wheel, they may face other challenges, such as natural changes in vi-sion, hearing and reaction times,” says Lee.

Brushing up on driving skills can help older driv-ers manage health-related changes that may come with age. AARP’s Driv-er Safety course is spe-cifically designed to help people 50 and older re-fresh their driving skills. To find a classroom course near you, visit www.aarp.org/drive or call 888-227-7669, or sign up for an online course. Courses are available in English or Spanish.

Three driving distractions that may surprise you

Eating, drinking, having unrestrained pets in the car and rubbernecking are all dangerous activities on the road.

Gas mileage drops in winter due to cold oil, cold tires and cold air in the carburetor, but there are some actions drivers can take to increase fuel efficiency.

“Distracted driving can be deadly driving. Researchers are finding that any type of distraction is risky, not just the ones we typically think

of as dangerous, like texting or talking on the phone.”
