T h e C o r ve t te wa s n ’t around 100 years ago when Chevrolet was born. But for 2012, the iconic two-seater gets a Chevrolet Centennial Special Edition package that founder and racing pioneer Louis Chevrolet could have loved.

The Centennial package of suspension control, special graphics, badging and inte-rior comes on Corvettes in only one color — black in-side and out. The first Chev-rolet built in 1911 in Detroit was black, too.

But the 2012 Corvette Centennial Special Edi-tion’s sinister look, created by modern Carbon Flash metallic exterior paint ac-cented by satin black exte-rior graphics, is anything but old. Applied to the low-slung, pavement-hugging Corvette, the look can ap-peal to drivers wanting a distinctive, edgy appearance on a car with ample power.

And the package comes as the Corvette is a recom-mended buy of Consumer Reports magazine with a predicted reliability of aver-age.

Centennial packagePriced as a $4,950 op-

tion, the centennial pack-age is available on various 2012 Corvette coupes and convertibles, starting with the Grand Sport 3LT coupe with six-speed manual that has a starting manu-facturer’s suggested retail price, including destina-tion charge, of $61,995. The lowest starting retail price for an automatic-transmis-sion, 2012 Corvette that can add the Centennial pack-age is the Grand Sport 3LT coupe automatic at $64,220, according to the Chevrolet consumer website.

High-performance com-

petitors tend to be higher priced.

For example, the 2013 Nissan GT-R has a starting MSRP, including destina-tion charge, of $97,820, and the 2013 GT-R’s Black Edi-tion — with black wheels and paint and carbon fiber spoiler — starts at $107,320. Meantime, the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S starts at $91,450.

Corvettes have long had their fans and collectors, and U.S. sales in calen-dar 2011 rose 4.3 percent, to 13,164 from a year earli-er. But annual sales totaled 30,000-plus in the mid 2000s. Blame it on the de-pressed economy, gasoline prices and parent company General Motors’ financial problems.

VarietiesWhile competitors have a

relatively skimpy selection of powerplants, Chevro-let offers many versions of Corvettes.

They range from the base 1LT with 430-horsepow-er, 6.2-liter V-8 to the Z06

with 505-horsepower, 7-li-ter, naturally aspirated V-8 to the ZR1 with 638-horse-power, supercharged, 6.2-liter V-8. The breadth of performance, and car per-sonality, is impressive.

Base Corvettes are suit-ed more for regular roads, while the test Corvette — a Z06 coupe with centennial package and ultimate per-formance package — was a machine looking for a race-track.

The tester’s overhead valve V-8 had monstrous pow-er that made merging into highway traffic seem like launch mode. Torque rises to 470 foot-pounds at 4,800 rpm in awesome fashion, accompanied by throaty en-gine sounds coming out of the two-mode muffler sys-tem with four tailpipes.

The Z06 is a lightweight, 3,200-pound car, so it re-acted fast. The tester, with optional carbon fiber body pieces, often pushed the driver’s head and back into the seatbacks as it thrust forward forcefully in even mild maneuvers. But there

was some shake in the body as rolled over road bumps. The ride was stiff in touring suspension mode and harsh in sport mode.

Either way, the Corvette was intimately in touch with the pavement.

Surprising fuel mileageFuel mileage isn’t usually

something to boast about in high-performance cars. But in 65 percent city and 35 percent highway driving, the test Z06 averaged a surpris-ing, real-world 18 miles per gallon. This is spot on with the federal government’s posted combined mileage rating of 15 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on highways.

In comparable driving, a 2012 Volvo S60 averaged only 19.4 mpg from a 3-liter, turbocharged, six-cylinder engine.

InteriorThe Corvette has seats

only for two, but the Z06 seats were the best Corvette resting spots to find in years. They were well-padded in the right spots and nicely sculpted, though not to an

extreme.Inside, the red stitch-

ing on the seats, steering wheel and dashboard was aligned and attractive, and fit and finish was excellent overall. But the navigation system display is small and seems outdated by today’s nav system standards. It was disconcerting to see the screen surface push inward, rather than hold solid, when the radio’s touch screen was used.

Passengers must drop down onto the low seats and then climb back up when they exit. Some had to put hands on the door sills to lift themselves out of the Cor-vette.

Views out back are se-verely obscured by the large metal pillar around the rear window glass.

Driver and passenger can’t see much in front of them, either, because the Corvette sits so low to the pavement. With a Range Rover in front of the Corvette, the driv-er was at eye level with the lower part of the sport util-ity vehicle’s rear bumper.

The tester came with op-

tional low-grip, wide per-formance tires that made such a racket on grooved concrete pavement, the au-dio was drowned out. These Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires also complained loudly during U-turns — enough that the driver pulled over to be sure nothing was wrong. The driver also fights to keep the car on a proper course if the pavement has defined grooves, because the tires wander into the grooves and try to follow them, instead.

Items must be lifted way up, over the car’s body, to get them inside our out of the 22-cubic-foot cargo space.

Also, the front spoiler is just 5.5 inches from the ground and can scrape on even mildly sloped driveway entrances, not to mention concrete parking lot curbs.

There has been one safety recall of the 2012 Corvette. Some models could have liftgate hinges that don’t meet required load require-ments and the liftgate could separate during a crash, ac-cording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Ad-ministration.

The new standard bearer of Audi’s exciting high-per-formance TT model line is the 2012 TT RS. Propelled by a 2.5 liter turbocharged five-cylinder TFSI engine that generates 360 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque, TT RS is pow-erful enough, fast enough, handles well enough and is elegantly designed enough to sit comfortably in the top gun seat for the line.

Audi S and RS sport per-formance models began with the S2 Coupe in 1990, and the Audi RS2 Avant ushered in the RS era in 1994. The Audi TT two-door sports cars began their existence in 1998, built on Volkswagen Group-A platforms (VW is a sister company).

Named for prestigious race

While there has been speculation that “TT” stands for Twin Turbo, Audi tells us that the TT in the Audi TT stands for Tourist Trophy, which is a prestigious series of rac-es throughout the British Isles (most notably an an-nual race run on the Isle of Man, in which a beefed up car was called a “TT”). The “RS” stands for the German phrase: “RennSport “or “racing sport.” RS is Audi’s highest performance “top-tier” trim level, positioned above Audi’s “S” (“Sport”) specification level.

The 2012 Audi TT RS dif-fers from the TT S, with more power, as well as ex-clusive design elements in-cluding a high-gloss black diamond-patterned Single-frame grille, fully functional large front air inlets, fixed rear wing spoiler that can be manually extended with a push of a button or which will extend automatically at pre-determined speeds for better driving dynamics and increased downforce, oval exhaust pipes, rear body-color diffuser and unique 19-inch rotor wheels. The interior features RS-exclu-sive appointments, such as a contoured three-spoke

sport multifunction steer-ing wheel, aluminum door sills with the RS logo, and RS-specific interior door handles.

The Audi TT RS also offers top-of-the-line electron-ic features including Audi concert radio with single CD player and MP3 reading capability, and a compli-mentary three-month sub-scription to SiriusXM Satel-lite Radio.

Exterior in motionOn the outside, TT RS is

rounded, sporty and had forward-moving stance. My 3320-lb. test ride was decked out in Ibis White paint, mated to a Black Silk Nappa leather interior, and dimensions measured a road-hugging 165.3 inches long, 72.5 inches wide and 52.8 inches high on a cozy 97.2-inch wheelbase.

Additional exterior en-hancements include TT RS-specific front and rear bum-pers, front windshield with gray color strip, electrically adjustable, heated, manual folding mirrors, Xenon plus headlights with headlight washers, adaptive headlights and special TT RS badging.

Responsive turbo-power

But the item that specifi-cally separates Audi TT RS from the rest of the Audi RS line or TT line is perfor-mance and handling. The front-engine, 4-wheel-drive, 4-passenger hatch-back is powered by the 2.5 liter turbocharged and in-tercooled DOHC 20-valve inline-5 engine with an iron block and aluminum head. With direct fuel injection, the system is EPA rated at 18mpg in the city and 28mpg on the highway, while our tests showed an average of 18mpg in mixed-use driv-ing.

From a speed perspec-tive, TT RS offers respon-sive power in all ranges, with

excellent low-end torque and impressive passing ef-fectiveness. On the track, TT RS sprinted from zero to 60mph in a blazing 4.3 sec-onds with the speed gover-nor on, and finished a quar-ter-mile in 12.8 seconds. The combination of FSI in-jection mated to a six-speed manual transmission and quattro all-wheel drive is alert and dependable.

With the engine humming – loudly at times on long highway stretches – the ve-hicle hugs corners, though the front end dips at times when twisty speeds are high. Understeer is apparent in high-speed maneuvers, but the Toyo Proxes tires grip well and yaw is nearly nonexistent while road flaws are smoothed out to a driv-er’s feel.

Cozy cabinThe cockpit seats four and

is cozy, providing 37.7 inch-es of front headroom with 32.6 inches in row two. Leg-room goes 41.1 inches and 29.3, while shoulder room accommodates 53.2 inches in row one and 47.5 for rear seaters.

The interior is packed with amenities starting with 10-way power front sport seats with 4-way lumbar adjust-ment, automatic air-condi-tioner with sun sensor and

active carbon filter, tilt and telescopic manually adjust-able steering column, auto dimming interior mirror with digital compass, light and rain sensors for auto-matic headlights and wind-shield wipers, nine speaker sound system, 140-watt amplifier, cruise control and driver information system with lap timer.

Safety is attended to with driver and passenger full-size dual-stage front airbags and knee airbags, driver and passenger seat-mounted head and thorax side airbags, optical and acoustic safety belt warning, tire mobil-

ity system and tire pressure monitoring system.

The family of TT vehicles starts at $47,000 for the Coupe and $50,000 for the Roadster. The TT RS starts at $56,850 plus $875 for destination charges, for a $57,725 base with a 2.5 TFSI engine. The Technology Package added $3500 for adaptive xenon-plus head-lights with LED daytime running light technology, Audi Navigation-plus with real-time traffic, BOSE® surround sound system with 12 speakers and Au-dioPilot noise-compensa-tion, Audi music interface

with iPod® integration and parking system with rear sensors. Heated front seats were $450, to make the fi-nal sticker $61,675. Carbon fiber and sporty appearance options could have added another $5000 to the tick-et.

DETROIT — Expect fewer breakdowns, squeaks, rat-tles or other problems with your car.

A nationwide survey of owners by consulting firm J.D. Power and Associates shows that cars and trucks are more dependable than ever.

Lexus was the top per-former in the survey re-leased Wednesday, but most other brands also showed improvement.

J.D. Power polled 31,000 owners of 2009 model-year vehicles and rated brands by the number of problems owners have experienced in the last 12 months. Prob-lems can range from stalling engines and transmission issues to peeling paint and electronics glitches.

The top complaint in this year’s survey was exces-sive wind noise, followed by noisy brakes.

86 problems per 100 ve-hicles. Porsche, Cadillac, Toyota and Scion rounded out the top five. The worst performers were Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Jag-uar. Chrysler owners re-ported 192 problems per 100 vehicles.

The industry average was 132 problems per 100 vehi-

cles, a 13 percent improve-ment from last year and the lowest rate since the survey began in 1990. The results are particularly surpris-ing since the industry was in turmoil in 2009. Both General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC went through bankruptcy that year, and U.S. auto sales fell to a 30-year low because of the recession.

“Despite facing immense challenges in 2009, auto-makers placed a keen focus on delivering outstanding levels of quality, which they understood would be es-

sential to their long-term success,” J.D. Power auto-motive vice president David Sargent said in a statement.

Improved scoresJ.D. Power said 25 of 32

brands improved their scores, with Scion and Mini making the biggest leaps. Lincoln, Acura, Kia, Infin-iti, Ram and Jaguar all saw their scores fall from a year ago. Buick’s score stayed the same.

Toyota Motor Corp. had eight winners at the seg-ment level, the most of any automaker. The Toy-

ota Yaris was the most de-pendable subcompact, the Toyota Prius was the best compact and the Toyota Tundra was the best pick-up truck. Toyota began a series of safety recalls in late 2009, and some 2009 model-year vehicles were included in those recalls, but that wasn’t reflected in the company’s results.

Ford Motor Co. had three segment winners, includ-ing the Ford Fusion midsize car and Ford Explorer SUV, while General Motors Co. and Nissan Motor Co. had two winners each.

Lexus is the top performer in a survey of vehicle dependability released Wednesday.

NEW YORK — The chair-man of Penske Automotive Group Inc. said Wednesday that he expects demand for premium and luxury vehi-cles to continue to be strong this year, as more drivers head to dealerships to re-place their aging cars and trucks.

Earlier in the day, the Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based automotive retail-er said its fourth-quarter profit jumped 67 percent to $47.7 million, or 53 cents per share, from $28.5 million, or 31 cents per share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

The company’s earnings from continuing operations rose to $42.5 million, or 47 cents per share — six cents ahead of Wall Street expectations.

to $2.96 billion from $2.67 billion, as total retail unit sales increased 11 percent to 71,453 cars and trucks. Ana-lysts, on average, expected $2.98 billion in revenue, ac-cording to a FactSet poll.

Chairman Roger Penske said the company continued to benefit from its focus on premium and luxury vehicle

brands, many of which post-ed steep sales jumps in 2011.

“I would say the market finished the year with strong momentum and that the premium and luxury seg-ments were very strong,” Penske said in a telephone interview with The Associ-ated Press. “We see that car-rying on into the new year, not quite at same the pace as before, but still strong.”

BMW, Audi and Lexus ac-counted for 70 percent of Penske Automotive’s sales during the recent quarter, up from 68 percent in the same period in 2010.

The chairman said he also expects the company to get a boost as the year progress-es from improved invento-ries of Toyota and Honda brand vehicles, which to-gether with their luxury Lexus and Acura brand ve-hicles, accounted for about 27 percent of the company’s fourth-quarter sales.

Supplies of those vehicles were severely limited af-ter the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan cut off pipelines of critical parts and forced the automak-ers to stop or reduce vehicle production.
