Forget about retro, nos-talgia stuff. The 2012 Dodge Charger is an impressive, large, rear-wheel drive se-dan for today’s buyers who want to stand out from the crowd.

Revamped for 2012, the expressively styled, four-door Charger can look like a snarl coming down the road. It can act like a snarl-ing machine, too, especially if it has the new-for-2012, 6.4-liter, Hemi V-8 with 470 horsepower.

Even the base, 3.6-liter V-6 is noteworthy. Mated to a new, eight-speed auto-matic transmission, it gives the 2012 Charger a federal government fuel economy rating of 19 miles per gal-lon in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway. That’s higher than the 19/28-mpg rating for the 2012 Toyota Avalon.

Suspension upgrades give the new Charger smart, responsive handling, and at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administra-tion’s crash tests, the 2012 Charger earned a top safety ranking — five out of five stars — for overall passen-ger protection.

AffordableBest of all, auto enthusi-

asts can find Charger mod-els affordable. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including des-tination charge, is $26,420 for a 2012 Charger SE with the base, 3.6-liter V-6 with 292-horsepower mated to an automatic transmission.

This compares with the starting MSRP, includ-ing destination charge, of $33,955 for a base, 2012 Avalon with 268-horse-power V-6 and automatic transmission, and $26,350 for a base, 2012 Ford Tau-rus large sedan with 263-horsepower V-6 and auto-matic transmission. Both

the Avalon and Taurus are front-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive, 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan with 333-horsepower V-6 has a starting retail price of $35,075.

The lowest starting re-tail price for a 2012 Char-ger with V-8 is $30,920 for an R/T model with auto-matic-transmission and 370-horsepower, 5.7-liter, Hemi V-8. A 2012 Charger with the top-level, 470-horsepower Hemi V-8 has a starting retail price of $47,720.

Neither the Avalon nor Taurus is offered with a V-8. But the starting retail price, including destination charge, for a 2012 Genesis sedan with 385-horsepow-er, 4.6-liter V-8 is $45,375,

while a 2012 Genesis 5.0 R-Spec sedan with 429-horsepower, 5-liter V-8 starts at $47,375.

RetroThe Charger name dates

to 1966, when Dodge joined domestic auto compa-nies in selling “pony” and muscle cars. The name was used into the late 1970s and revived in 2006 on sedans that the media early on de-scribed as retro models.

But the 2012 Charger’s ride, amenities and tech-nology aren’t retro.

The test, 2012 Charger SRT8, for example, had the latest fuel saving technol-ogy — deactivation of up to four of the eight cylinders when power wasn’t needed plus an active valve exhaust system that allowed fuel-sipping across a wide rpm range.

It helped the test car, with 70 percent city driving, to average 15.4 mpg. The of-ficial SRT8 mileage rating is

14/23 mpg. Note this is the lowest mileage rating of all Charger models. The SRT8 incurs a $1,000 U.S. gas guzzler tax.

‘Oomph’The big “oomph,” or

torque, in the car peaks at 470 foot-pounds at 4,300 rpm and is accompanied by awesome engine sounds.

The five-speed automat-ic seemed a bit old-school, but it worked fine and in-cluded paddle shifters so drivers can shift through gears on their own, if they like.

Optional, 245/45 per-formance tires on the test car seemed to bite into the pavement to get trac-tion quickly as the power came on. And the 4,365-pound Charger easily beat other vehicles away from stoplights. Power came on steadily when the SRT8 merged onto highways and in passing maneuvers.

Reportedly, the top speed

of 175 miles an hour is only because at that point, the aerodynamic drag on the car keeps it from going fast-er, not because Dodge in-stalled a limiter.

StyleUnlike most large sedans

that have a sedate look, the SRT8 has audacious styling. The grille is blacked out and looks like a massive vacuum opening at the front of the car. There are SRT8 fend-ers on the sides and four, chrome, double-walled ex-haust pipes at the back.

The sporty coupe-like look even fooled a passen-ger, who walked up and ca-sually opened the rear door to get inside. He had to be reminded that there was a front door handle farther toward the front of the car.

Passengers get generous legroom, front and back, of at least 40.1 inches. The Genesis sedan provides some 44 inches of front-seat legroom.

Headroom of 38.6 inch-es in the well-bolstered Charger front seats pro-vides most drivers and pas-sengers with comfortable resting spots and decent views out over the slightly domed, aluminum hood. The Avalon has a bit more headroom— 38.9 inches in the front seat.

The 37.9 inches of rear headroom in the highly styled Charger compares with the Avalon’s 37.5 inch-es and the Genesis sedan’s 37.7 inches.

Easy rideThe test Charger SRT8

tooled around town and in the countryside with fine manners, responding with-out nervousness to steering inputs and keeping easily in its lane during turns and curves.

The tidy, sport steering wheel with the flat-shaped bottom was a nice perk, and interior fit and finish was excellent.

BAHOVITSA, Bulgaria — Great Wall Motors launched operations in Bulgaria on Tuesday, becoming the first Chinese automaker to as-semble cars in the European Union.

At a ceremony in the vil-lage of Bahovista, the major Chinese sports utility vehi-cle maker said it will start with an initial production of 2,000 cars a year, with the output gradually ris-ing to 50,000 annually by 2014.

MarketsThe car plant, owned by

Great Wall and Bulgaria’s Litex Motors, will initially produce cars aimed at the local market. Future targets could include Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Serbia.

Great Wall officials said the aim is to gradually ex-pand into other European markets. Since Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, the project provides Great Wall with access to other EU countries at zero tariff levels.

“We have to first meet de-mand in Bulgaria and the neighboring countries, but in the long term we hope that our cars made in Bul-garia can reach the Europe-an market,” said Wang Fen-

gying, Great Wall president and CEO.

She said that it could take three to five years to reach that goal, but affirmed that “stepping on the European market is our strategy.”

ModelsThe first two models being

produced in Bulgaria — the Voleex C10 city car and the Steed 5 pickup — will cost €8,000-€12,500 ($10,565-$16,500).

The plant’s executive di-rector, Iliya Terziev, said that the number of workers at the 80-million-euro-plant will be gradually increased from 120 to 2,000 over the next three years. Next to the current assembling facil-ity, where original Chinese car parts are put together by Bulgarian workers, con-struction is under way for a welding and painting facil-ity.

“Our aim is to shift as much as possible of the op-erations to Bulgaria,” Terziev said adding that local com-panies have shown interest in providing the plant with spare parts and car accesso-ries.

Economy boostThe new car plant is part

of Bulgaria’s efforts to at-tract foreign investment needed to boost its crisis-battered economy, but also part of Asia’s rising eco-

nomic force’s search for new export markets.

Earlier this month, the Chinese news agency Xi-nhua released a website in Bulgarian, offering news and analysis about the country — the second largest econo-my in the world.

ProjectsRecently, Chinese wind

turbine manufacturer Ming Yang Wind Power Group agreed to supply 125 mega-watt equipment for two projects in Bulgaria.

In many countries across eastern Europe, govern-ments have built active re-lations with China reviving ties that were forged in the Communist era.

Despite the downturn in the Romanian economy, Chinese business there has remained strong. Last July, a €100 million ($132 mil-lion) complex near the cap-ital, Bucharest, was inaugu-rated.

In Poland, the country’s Deputy Prime M inister Waldemar Pawlak recently invited Chinese business-men to invest in Poland say-ing his country was the best way for China to access Eu-ropean markets.

Trade between Poland and China reached $1.6 billion in the first three quarters of 2011, a 10-percent rise from the same period the year before.

Serbia and China signed an agreement on “strate-gic partnership” in 2009, paving the way for Chinese investment in the Balkan country. The two also have close political ties and Bel-

grade considers China an important ally internation-ally because it has not rec-ognized Kosovo.

A consortium of Chi-nese companies is making plans with Serbia’s power utility for a package of in-

vestments worth more than €2 billion. China has start-ed building a 1,500-meter bridge — according to local media to be called “Friend-ship Bridge” — over the Danube in the outskirts of Belgrade which should be

finished in 2014.———

Perennially, the Chevrolet Silverado is the number-two selling vehicle in America, but according to their high production-value Super Bowl TV ad, “Chevy Apoc-alypse,” the rugged, hard-working and versatile half-ton pick-up truck will be the vehicle that survives all ob-stacles. To the tune of Barry Manilow’s “Looks Like We Made It,” only Silverados and Twinkies will make it through total destruction, as four trucks rendezvous and their drivers lament that their buddy didn’t make it because he “didn’t drive the longest lasting, most de-pendable truck on the road.” The ad ends with a voiceover declaring: “From the begin-ning of your work to the end of the world. Chevy runs deep.”

Where the ad entertain-ment ends, and reality takes over, Silverado has a his-tory of being a dependable, tough truck since it began as a trim level for Chevrolet C/K pick-ups and Suburbans from 1975 through 1999, when it became its own model line.

Redesigned last year, the 2012 Silverado 1500 edi-tion sees only a few tweaks. New for 2012 are a restyled chrome mesh grille with chrome surround on LS and LT models and body-color surround on LTZ models, a custom chrome front bum-per with silver-painted low-er fascia, and chrome end caps on 2WD models with-

out tow hooks for improved aerodynamics. Other 2012 upgrades include avail-able 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels (17-inch wheels are standard), heat-ed/cooled front seats and hard-drive navigation radio with AM/FM/XM stereo with CD/DVD player, MP3 compatibility and USB port available on LTZ models, and the inclusion of elec-tronic trailer sway control and hill start assist on the vehicle’s StabiliTrak stabil-ity control system.

Full size and confidentA full-size half-ton pick-

up, Silverado 1500 with an Extended Cab and a short box measures 230.2 inches long (the long box adds 19 inches), width is 79.9 inches and height is 73.7 inches for the 4WD, on a 143.5-inch wheelbase. Ground clear-ance is 9 inches, step-in height measures 22.6 inch-es and the Silverado LT’s base curb weight comes in at 5092 lbs. The Extended Cab standard box is 62.4 inches wide at the floor with a width between the wheel housings of 50.6 inches, and the box is 78.9 inches long with an inside height of 21 inches.

The Silverado 1500 is sculpted with a confident, broad-shouldered stance, a power dome hood, flared rear fenders, vertically stacked reflector-optics headlamps and Chevrolet’s iconic bow tie emblem in

the grille. Large, grab-style door handles are designed for easy use with gloves and heated, power-adjustable outside mirrors with auto-dimming and integrated signal indicators are avail-able.

Several power optionsSilverado power comes in

a variety of sizes and capa-bilities, from a 4.3-liter V-6 that produces 195hp and 260 lbs-ft of torque, to a standard (on the 1500 LT) 4.8-liter V-8 that is E85 ca-pable and puts out 302hp and 305 lbs-ft of torque, to a 5.3-liter FlexFuel V-8 rat-ed at 315 hp and 335 lbs-ft of torque, to a brawny Vortec 6.2-liter that thunders out 403hp and 417 lbs ft of torque and gets 12/18 on gas for a 4WD.

My LT trim 4WD test truck sported the 4.8-liter plant, linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission, with the system rated at 13 mpg in the city and 18mpg on the highway for gasoline. A week of testing in terrible snow and rain, yielded an average of 14.2mpg.

The more powerful 6.2-li-ter engine can take the Sil-verado to an estimated 6.6-second zero-to-60 sprint, and the 4.8-liter should go in the 9s, but while the truck was willing, the rainy, icy

track was not, and timing runs were not completed. However, on the highway and in quick maneuvers, Sil-verado was smooth, quiet, comfortable and secure on slick roads, sightlines were good, and power was on the money when called upon. A large turning radius made tight exercises a chore, but in most circumstances, Sil-verado acts like a smaller truck.

With a tow rating of 9600 lbs. and an interior packed with amenities, Silverado is a multipurpose talent.

Roomy and safe cabThe Extended Cab format

provides roomy interior ac-commodations with 41.2 inches of front headroom and 39.2 in the cab; legroom goes 41.3 and 34.3 while shoulder room is at 65.2 and

65.3. The driver’s cabin and cab are filled with such items as dual-zone automatic cli-mate control, driver infor-mation center and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Silverado safety is first-rate with standard head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for all seating rows, seat-mount-ed side-impact air bags for driver and right-front pas-senger that provide tho-rax and pelvic protection, high-capacity brake sys-tem with four-channel ABS, tire pressure moni-toring system and strong body structure to absorb crash energy and provide a protective “safety cage” around occupants.

The WT trim starts at $22,195; the LS starts at $29,925 and the LT goes $27,750 for 2WD and $31,110

for the regular cab 4WD. The Extended Cab starts at $33,655 for a standard bed and 4WD. The interior plus package added $1015 for EZ-Lift/locking tailgate, fog lamps, 6-way power seat adjuster, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and Bluetooth® wireless tech-nology. A power sliding rear window added $250, des-tination and freight was $995 and current incentives slashed the final sticker by $2000 for a drive-off price of $33,915.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Jack Roush once was the most hands-on team owner in the NASCAR garage.

It wouldn’t be odd to walk into the garage on a race weekend and see Roush un-der the hood, fiddling with a carburetor.

But with the advent of electronic fuel injection in the Sprint Cup Series this season, Roush jokes that the level of technology finally has exceeded his ability to tinker.

After winning pole po-sition for the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Roush Fenway Racing driver Carl Edwards joked that one of the keys to the team’s great start to the season is that “Jack hasn’t been doing much carburetor tuning.”

Roush, sitting next to Ed-wards in the interview ses-sion, had to acknowledge it was true.

“They’re working me clos-er to the door,” Roush said. “The more this technology expands, the less there is for a dinosaur like me to do. I’m just a comedian right now.”

Making the switchAfter clinging to carbure-

tors for decades after they were regularly found in pas-senger cars, NASCAR finally is making the switch to fuel injection.

It was a major change

for teams and their engine builders, making right now an exciting time for guys like engine builders. Doug Yates, the CEO of Roush Yates En-gines, said he has more data than ever to analyze and can make far more adjustments to affect the engines’ per-formance.

“It’s very exciting from an engine builder and an engi-neer’s perspective, having new technology in NAS-CAR.” Yates said. “And it’s our job to hopefully make it seamless.”

TransitionThe transition mostly has

flown under the radar dur-ing Daytona Speedweeks so far — a good sign that there aren’t any major issues.

“It’s out there, and it’s quiet,” said Robin Pem-berton, NASCAR’s vice president of competition. “Knock on wood, but it just goes to show you how hard everybody’s working.”

Pemberton said the move to fuel injection helps make NASCAR more relevant, especially to automakers backing the sport. It also gives teams a little more lee-way to tune their engines — to a point.

“There are tools in the toolbox that we are not us-ing with this system, for ob-vious reasons,” Pemberton said. “And that is to keep the drivers driving and the crew chiefs working on their set-ups.”

Illegal advantageP e m b e r t o n e x p e c t s

teams to try to get away with something at some p o i n t . T h e re h a s b e e n speculation that allow-ing electronic fuel injec-tion could open the door for a team to come up with a hidden traction control system, giving them an il-legal advantage.

“That’s what everybody says,” Pemberton said. “But the truth be known, that’s probably not your biggest problem. The biggest prob-lem is the one you don’t know about, right?”

NASCAR officials now have electronic devices that plug into teams’ computer systems to make they aren’t

altering their software. And if a team gets caught mess-ing with its fuel injection system, Pemberton says the penalty will be harsh.

“It’ll be a top of the line penalty,” Pemberton said.

Driver Jeff Burton said fans probably won’t notice the change.

“From a performance standpoint, I am not sure there is going to be a major difference,” Burton said. “I think fuel mileage should increase a little bit; perfor-mance should increase a lit-tle bit, probably not enough for the fans to really be able to tell.”

Passenger carsBurton said using fuel in-

jection will help the auto-motive industry, making it more likely that technology tested on the track eventu-ally will make its way into passenger cars. But Burton acknowledges it has been a burden to the teams.

“Teams have had to spend a lot of money, put a lot of resources to it, not just in money, so yes it is tough,” Burton said. “It also comes at a time where the econ-omy is down, so it is not at the best time. Nonetheless, it is something that had to happen.”

CriticismThe idea of switching to

fuel injection wasn’t uni-versally accepted right away. Last year, driver Brad Kesel-owski was fined by NASCAR officials for criticizing the move, saying the technology being introduced still lags far behind street cars and “does nothing for the sport except cost the team owners money.”

Asked about his com-ments last week, Keselowski kept quiet.

“I said as much as I need-ed to say,” Keselowski said.

“As much as I could afford to say.”

The transition also was an issue for driver Rob-by Gordon, who owns his own team. Gordon said the switch to fuel injection made his old intake mani-folds obsolete, forcing him to buy new ones. Gordon thinks the old manifolds could have been modified to work with the new sys-tem.

That complaint aside, Gordon thinks the intro-duction of fuel injection is good for NASCAR. And he isn’t worried that NASCAR will have a hard time polic-ing cheaters.

“I’m not worried about it,” Gordon said. “These guys that tune these en-gines, they know how to adjust the power band to make the power come on at certain things and make the drivability (better). I’m sure you’re thinking trac-tion control and all that, which is the first thing that everybody thinks. But these engine builders are pretty clever. And you don’t have to have traction control.”
