What is Multiple Support Response Spectrum Analysis?
In the upcoming V8i (V9.2) release is Multiple Support Response Spectrum Analysis, also commonly known as independent support motion where groups of different supports are supported on different structures which move independently in an earthquake or offshore platforms subjected to wave motions. We can easily show the animated motion of this type of dynamic loading and many different modal and spectral combination methods to satisfy NRC benchmarks.
For piping systems subjected to multiple support response spectra (MSRS) or independent support motions (ISM), such as the case for piping systems supported on different buildings or at different floor levels, the motion of one set of supports could be quite different from the other. For such systems, the traditional approach is to use the simpler uniform response spectrum method to compute the inertia or dynamic response using single envelope spectrum for the different support groups. The pseudo static component of relative motion between different support groups can be calculated using seismic anchor movement (SAM) analysis. The combined response can then be calculated by adding the dynamic (Uniform Response Spectrum) and SAM analysis results. This procedure, which is relatively simple, can lead to overly conservative results. Using MSRS in AutoPIPE 9.2 would lead to more realistic results.

TOP THREE (3) SUPPORT ISSUES
In the last 6 months – the top three (3) supports issues are:
1. Running AutoPIPE ATS with the incorrect version of AutoPIPE. (i.e. ATS 9.1.1.2 is used to validate AutoPIPE V8i 9.2.1.7 only)
2. Soil properties dialog screen containing multiple fields with 0.00 values. At a minimum, there should be very small values used for K2 e.g. 0.01 to reduce errors in the soil convergence iterations.
3. Importing different CAD models e.g. AutoPLANT, PDS, PDMS,
SmartPlant, CADWORX, AutoDESK Inventor into AutoPIPE. Provide information about each translator, and explain that other CAD neutral formats with no intelligence (i.e. DXF, DWG, and DGN) cannot be imported.
TOP 12 USER MISTAKES
1. Not Checking for latest Program Updates
The CAE development team finds an error with AutoPIPE and is fixed with a patch/hotfix (e.g. Defect #7055 “Hoop and Shear Modului are not updated when ambient temperature changes”).
2. Not Using File > Save AS to older version feature before opening a newer model in an older version. Otherwise the model can become corrupted
3. Modeling branch connections or tees correctly A tee/branch connection is constructed of one node point not 2 node points. Verify by using keyboard left/right arrows to scroll down the header pipe to the Tee center point then press up/down arrow keys to
Page | 27
change segment and scroll down the branch pipe. If you cannot change segments with the keyboard, the tee is not constructed correctly.
4. Understanding the flexible joint dialog i.e. enter local flexible stiffnesses Y-Shear & Z-Shear are translational stiffnesses common in Tied bellows.
For most cases, pressure area should be larger than the ID of the connected pipe. Don’t forget to select Pressure Extension in the Load > Static Analysis Sets Dialog so the pressure thrust is calculated across the flexible joint. When performing this rigorous pressure extension analysis, this area is used to transfer the axial pressure thrust to the pipe, and not the downstream elbow.
5. Understanding the Pressure & Temp Auto. option Each node point has operating Temperature and Pressure settings. Some values such as Expansion and Hot modulus are automatically calculated by the program. However, these values can be overridden by un-checking the Auto boxes. When using a NS (Non Standard) pipe material, it is the user’s responsibility to update these values according to the specified pressure and temperature.
6. Understanding pipe movements across support gaps
AutoPIPE uses an advanced non-linear analysis engine with Load sequencing. To check pipe movements at supports suggest looking at the individual loads e.g. Gr, T1, E1 etc and not the operating loads e.g. GP1T1E1
How to define Non-Linear Wind cases… click here to download
7. Verify the Nonlinear Static analysis tolerance values. Load > Static Analysis sets, modify an analysis set; click ok to the dialog if the Gaps/Friction/Soil option is checked. Then non-linear settings dialog will appear sometimes these values change, and should be confirmed when the results appear questionable.
8. Confirm Static Analysis load cases are checked (For example, confirm that a newly added wind load case was consider during the analysis by: 1. open the Static Analysis dialog and check that the new wind load case has be included in the analysis or 2. look at the output > analysis summary report.
Page | 28
9. Not checking warning messages for imported models
After importing an AutoPIPE model or file from another application e.g. AutoPLANT or PDS, scan the pipe material, pipe connections, anchor locations, etc… AutoPIPE import feature provides a lot of options to choose from. Once the model has been successfully imported, a list of warnings will be displayed; users should scan this list to become aware of the interpretations.
10. Insert existing model into current model or Copy/Paste
AutoPIPE does not automatically connect imported segments to existing model segments. Only the base point is connected if “connect to existing point” is checked. User is advised to evaluate each model connection to be correct.
11. Delete duplicate node points/segments Using copy/paste or importing a model, there could be segment overlap. Suggest using AutoPIPE V8i’s Coincident nodes detection tool.
12. Apply the correct SIF’s to branch connections not covered by the specified design code e.g. Laterals. Calculate the SIF using a true FEA software package or contact the fitting manufacture. Input the SIF using Insert> Xtra Data> Joint type & User SIF> Joint End type = User Defined, enter the SIF values and check “Override all other SIFs at this point”.
Reminder: Please Use AutoPIPE’s help menu and FAQ.

MAJOR USER’S TIP
“I use the keyboard shortcuts for modeling. So if I want to add a support, I simply touch the "I" key and then the "S" key then hit the "Tab" key to move to whichever field needs modification. Most of the younger engineers have found this method of using keyboard shortcuts to be the fastest for modeling, while the older engineers use the component toolbars. There are many systems in which younger guys will almost never touch the mouse until modeling is complete. We also see that the younger guys are approximately 15-40% faster modeling using the keyboard shortcuts.” One thing we do encourage is before starting the calculation or even opening AutoPIPE, open the piping model, to view the system and think about how you are going to model in AutoPIPE. Think about using the copy/paste feature if you see that there are a lot of similar lines, then use Edit>Move/Stretch or Rotate to make adjustments. If there is a system with a lot of rack modeling, use the feature of inserting multiple points. Basically create a plan for modeling in AutoPIPE rather than just starting from scratch and modeling blindly. Spending just a few minutes doing this can save a lot of time especially on complex systems. “ “There is a lot of time savings when you are not looking up to find the pointer and then navigate the mouse to find the button to add whichever component you need. Typically the younger guys just use the mouse for making changes over long portions of piping, i.e. inserting supports over multiple node points or changing pipe properties or temperature/pressure over a range. “

TECHNOTES
1. Why is path dependent Non-linear analysis (Load Sequencing) important for correct results?
It is to understand that AUTOPIPE has a more advanced non-linear analysis engine with load sequencing and we can expect more accurate non-linear results than The Total Load approach.
If analyses are performed for Total Loads, the steps are:
1. analyze for gravity; 2. analyze for gravity plus thermal; then 3. subtract Step 1 from Step 2 to get thermal.
If analyses are performed for Load Increments, the steps are:
1. analyze for gravity; then 2. analyze for thermal, define gravity as the initial state.
To obtain operating case results of gravity + thermal, a non-code load combination is defined in the Result > Load Combination menu.
To make you understand what means the totals loads approached in comparison with the load Sequencing is: By the total loads approached, you throw everything that you have in the system and add it together regardless when and how thing happens – it is a simplified non-linear analysis. This is going to be your operating case. By load sequencing you consider the changing boundary conditions at the start and end of each loading. One simple explanation “Imagine friction ‘building up’ on the piping system during thermal load. It hasn't broken friction or closed a support gap yet, but it's building up to that point of doing so. Wind or seismic just gives it that little push to break friction and or close the gaps, but it does require that extra ‘push’ to make it happen. Therefore, the boundary conditions change, but only AFTER the occasional load hits, so boundary conditions are different between the thermal and occ loadings. This is only captured accurately using a Non-Linear incremental approach and not Total Loads approach.”
Page | 31

“Improved iteration strategy for Non-linear Structures” Powell & Simons

Load Sequencing Benefits
a) Apply the seismic or wind in operating case and not in sustain case. b) Refer to “Treatment of Support Friction in Pipe Stress Analysis”:
Liang-Chuan Peng (1989) - Friction is calculated as friction factor x bearing force. The vertical or lateral support bearing force (hence friction) changes for each different load case applied by the piping on the support. Of course, the lateral bearing force is also dependent on the support gap which is changing by load case.
c) Also many building design codes like UBC and IBC state that friction should not be considered for occasional type loads like Seismic. This is only possible using an incremental load case analysis engine like AutoPIPE when other non-linear conditions like support gaps needs to be considered.
Page | 32
2. How to calculate and include a ‘pendulum’ restoring effect of a rod hanger support.
It is best practice to design the length of rod hangers such that the maximum angulation is +/- 4 deg to avoid additional lateral loads being applied to the pipe. Anvil state “Where horizontal piping movements are greater than 1⁄2" and where the hanger rod angularly from the vertical is less than or equal to 4 degrees from the cold to hot position of the pipe, the hanger pipe and structural attachments shall be offset in such manner that the rod is vertical in the hot position. When the hanger rod angular is greater than 4 degrees from vertical, then structural attachment will be offset so that at no point with the rod angularity exceed 4 degrees from vertical.” However some tight configurations there is only limited space to accommodate a short hanger rod and this will apply a “pulling effect” on the pipe as the hanger rod moves in an arc as shown below. The complete method approach, spreadsheet and model can be downloaded here.
Page | 33
3. How to Model Sway Braces?
Sway Braces are commonly used for vibration control, absorbing shock loading, guiding thermal movement, or bracing against sway.
Click Here to download the modeling approach and sample model here
4. How can Trunnions and Dummy Supports impose high loads on the piping system and evaluate local stresses in WinNOZL?
Page | 34
When a pipe moves with has a base mounted trunnion or dummy sliding support, the friction generated imparts an overturning moment on the pipe. This additional moment (Friction x L) is often ignored but depending on the size of the bearing force (e.g. large diameter pipe with liquid contents) the friction force and corresponding moment can be high. This moment should be added to the stress in the pipe. For trunnions this can be treated conservatively as Tee (with no penetration). In additional for thin walled pipes, the local stress using WinNOZL in the pipe should be evaluated based on moment = Friction x L1.
Click Here to download the modeling approach and sample model
5. How to model a bi-linear ball swivel joint where the joint has an initial stiffness K1 until a rotation / moment limit is reached then a K2 final stiffness is acting?
AutoPIPE does not have a bilinear rotational support so to model this requires a combination of flexible joint, Rigid Beams and tie-links to simulate the rotation of the joint up to a rotation limit. The flexible joint has initial stiffness K1 until the joint rotates up to the tie-link stop then the tie-link stiffness K2 is acting. Check out the this modeling technique and model. Click Here
