The Australian automotive industry is globally integrated and competitive, exporting vehicles and components to the world.

There are three major vehicle manufacturers in Australia, along with a diverse group of components suppliers, specialist vehicle manufacturers and training, testing and research organisations.

australian-designed cars are made by local producers:

• Holden (a subsidiary of General motors)

• Toyota Australia

• Ford Australia.

The australian automotive industry is capable of taking a vehicle, its component systems and sub-systems, from a design concept through manufacture, to safety and durability testing, to final delivery, whole-of-life service and materials recycling.

australia designs, engineers and manufactures a complete range of automotive components including body and chassis systems, electrical and control systems, drivelines, interiors and aftermarket accessories.

Businesses engaged in component production are globally competitive; a wide range of components and aftermarket products is exported internationally. australian components suppliers are building international business relationships through technical and licensing agreements and investing in manufacturing facilities in india, Thailand, indonesia, china and malaysia.

The advanced components supply base is supported by the commonwealth scientific and industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and australia’s automotive cooperative Research Centre (autoCRC), plus numerous university and manufacturing research partners who offer technology solutions to vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers.

This research strength leads to innovative new products, processes and technologies.

For their global customers, Australian companies can bring expertise in product and systems design, engineering services, research and development, logistics, safety, product reliability and innovative systems.

With a skilled workforce, productive business culture and sophisticated intellectual property protection, manufacturers and their suppliers are able to develop innovative and future vehicle product solutions using sophisticated technology.

The Australian automotive industry has strong capabilities in advanced and future vehicle technologies for hybrids, EVs and alternate fuels, research and development, design and engineering, product and process development and advanced manufacturing.

These capabilities are supported by a solid commitment to innovation and quality engineering. Australia has a strong and competitive automotive manufacturing base, and includes over two hundred specialist automotive component firms with expertise in a wide range of technologies and materials.

tEcHnoLoGY InnoVAtIonThe australian automotive industry has developed world leading expertise in components, systems and vehicle design, research and development and testing.

many of the firms that provide these skills have facilities and services available for use by international companies. This expertise is valuable to emerging suppliers in asia that are seeking business partners or opportunities and looking for a commercial edge in the asia-Pacific region.

australian firms can assist growing businesses with product development by drawing on decades of experience in a highly competitive and open automotive market.

australia has strong capabilities in design, management, safety, reliability, logistics infrastructure, workforce, productive business culture, customer relationships, innovative systems, sophisticated iP protection and research and development. Utilisation of these capabilities can position companies for international operations with high quality value-add at a competitive price.

australia also has expertise in ‘green car’ technologies and products in areas of lightweight materials and alternate fuels, to reduce vehicle weight and emissions.

in the emerging area of electric vehicles, in 2012 the eV engineering project (a collaborative venture between leading australian automotive suppliers) converted a fleet of locally manufactured Holden commodore passenger cars to proof-of-concept fully electric vehicles. This project demonstrated the technical viability and attractiveness to customers of a full-size electric car. Technologies used in the project are scalable for future mass production development.

autoCRC revs up research

Case study: technology innovation

autocrc is australia’s automotive research and business excellence centre, established in 2005 and funded by the australian Government, industry and research partners.

This cooperative research centre (CRC) focuses on collaborative r&D in defined research themes, human capital development (skills, increased capability and education activities) and supplier business sustainability.

autocrc can assist companies with research needs by providing a range of services including researcher matching, project management, iP capture, and staff development.

industry-led projects and activities ensure that the crc’s work is focused on the needs of the australian automotive industry while recognising that opportunity is often now found with overseas partners and in overseas markets.

autocrc has built strong relationships with asian partners in china, Thailand and malaysia, providing benefits for both australian suppliers and researchers with international companies. These relationships have resulted in a number of successful projects.

For example, a collaborative partnership between autocrc, The University of south australia and smr automotive australia resulted in an innovative hard-coated plastic automotive mirror. Nanoengineered thin film coating systems were used to produce a mirror that is lightweight, strong and safer than glass. The mirror is now exported to the lucrative Us automotive market.

Thai company sammitr motors manufacturing established a research development office in melbourne’s Victorian centre for advanced materials and manufacturing technology incubator centre. Projects include a novel alternative fuel trailer and logistics system developed by sammitr which represents an opportunity for companies to improve their productivity using natural gas, australia’s most plentiful fuel resource.

autocrc has a close working relationship with the malaysia automotive institute. research to date is focusing on design improvement for injection moulding, high strength steel forming for automotive parts, injection mould design and process improvement. The tools created by autocrc will be used by australian and malaysian suppliers to optimise product and tool design.

Romteck speeds into Asia

Case study: technology innovation

Romteck PTM (RPTM) has designed, tested and exported its innovative technologies and services to Thailand and malaysia and is now making inroads into china. The company develops special testing systems for automotive components, specialising in brake systems. rPTm also provides testing services, equipment, and training and consultancy services.

rPTm recognised the desire of Thai automotive component manufacturers to break away from their dependency on the Japanese industry and find alternative customers and markets. in January 2011, with their first Thai customer, rPTm secured a memorandum of Understanding for a five-year plan with orders for technical services and testing equipment, wholly designed and manufactured by rPTm in australia.

Proton automobile's contract with rPTm saw a group of malaysian engineers visit rPTm’s high-tech facilities for advanced technical training. rPTm has also established a relationship with sirim. an agreement has been signed with sirim that seeks to form a joint enterprise in malaysia using rPTm’s services in australia as a model for a testing laboratory in Kuala lumpur.

With firm interest shown by chinese auto companies in acquiring knowledge about Western automobile r&D practice and technologies, rPTm submitted a proposal to a chinese auto maker for the establishment of a commercial testing laboratory – involving 80 per cent investment from the chinese firm.

Over the next few years, china will be rPTm’s focus for potential joint ventures involving the transfer of technology with local auto producers. For India and South-east asian markets, rPTm will provide testing and knowledge-based services with equipment sales tailored to an end-user technical environment.

Pedders earns its place in automotive heartland

Case study: aftermarket

australian automotive suspension company Pedders has translated australia’s unique conditions into a competitive advantage, taking its products and expertise to the world, including the automotive industry’s heartland – the Usa.

Founded in 1950 as a small welding business, three generations of the Pedder family have steered the company’s growth to manufacture, distribute and install its automotive suspension products in australia.

Pedders' 116 outlets include franchised and company owned stores and authorised dealers. Pedders also exports to Korea, Thailand, indonesia, Kenya, Tanzania, china, south africa, malaysia, Japan, New Zealand and many middle eastern regions.

Pedders currently has 80 dealers in the Us and is now working with major distributors to continue expansion. With the growth of the business assured, the company established Us representation in 2005, forming Pedders Usa.

The company’s Us presence has meant that products could be marketed through warehouse distributors, as well as individual outlets in the Us, with orders fulfilled from products stocked in-market from their warehouse in Texas.

Pedders has tailored its product line to international markets. Designed, built, researched and tested in some of australia’s harshest conditions, the company believes this makes its products superior to market competitors. Pedders has also developed specialist off-road original equipment and lowered vehicle applications especially for overseas markets.
