Automobiles and light commer-cial vehicles account for about 94% of all vehicle production, exports and domestic sales

in Brazil, which ended 2006 as the ninth largest light car producer in the world. Thirteen manufacturers have been set up in the country, al-most all of them multinational com-panies, producing global models in eighteen industrial plants spread around seven of the twentysix Bra-zilian States.

In its fiftyyear history the Brazil-ian automotive industry has never before produced and sold as many automobiles and light commercial vehicles as now. The national fleet numbers in the region of 25 mil-lion units and production has been through successive yearonyear phases of advancement. From 2005 to 2006 the fleet expanded by 3.9% and Brazilian plants produced almost 2.5 million units. In 2007 expansion was even greater, up by about 13% on 2006. Until December 2007, about 2.8 million light vehicles will have left Brazilian plants in twelve months.

This is a record, and close to the maximum capacity of most Brazil-ian assembly plants. This explains why expansion plans have been an-nounced, with investment in excess of US$ 5 billion being made by 2012.

Before this, the performance by Bra-zilian plants in 2007 will make Bra-zil the seventh or eighth largest light vehicle producer in the world, over-taking traditional producer coun-tries such as the United Kingdom and Canada.

From the beginning of this de-cade exports have driven produc-tion, with Brazil producing over two million units a year since 2004. Now, however, it is the strong growth on the domestic market that is fueling light vehicle assembly lines.

Following expansion of 13% in 2006, with sales of 1.83 million au-tomobiles and light commercial ve-hicles – 7.4% of them imported – do-mestic sales experienced their largest growth ever in 2007, with forecasts of about 25% growth for the year, getting close to sales of 2.4 million light vehicles in Brazil – about 10% of them imported.

credit based – Increased income and economic predictability have created a larger contingent of people willing to buy cars who have access to credit to consolidate this willing-ness. Proof of this is the volume of financed light vehicle sales in 2007: around 70% of all sales.

Financial assets in Brazil for ve-hicle purchasing have grown by close

to 25% in 2007 and total over US$ 35 billion. In the first half of 2007 alone financial institutions leant US$ 15 billion, up 28% on the same period in 2006.

At the same time that there is no lack of resources to finance pur-chases of automobiles and light com-mercial vehicles, credit has become cheaper and repayment periods have stretched. The average rate of inter-est for vehicle finance was 1.5% a month in 2007, compared with 3% in 2002. Currently payment plans are being offered over 80 months, but the most common are for 36 months, representing over half of the busi-ness done.

The combination of lower interest and longer repayment terms has in practice created lower installments, creating another Brazilian market phenomenon for automobiles and light commercial vehicles: people are buying more expensive cars. Hence sales of entrylevel models with 1.0

liter engines have been growing at a slower pace than sales of more expen-sive cars. What are known as “popu-lar cars” with 1.0liter engines that accounted for 71% of the Brazilian market at the beginning of the decade now account for around 55% of sales.

Another factor that has driven the Brazilian market has been the growth, since 2003, of bifuel tech-nology – “flex fuel” cars – that run on gasoline, ethanol or a mixture of both in any proportion. As Brazil is the world’s second largest producer of ethanol and bifuel is now distrib-uted on a large scale in the country, the advantage of ethanol’s lower price in comparison with gasoline has encouraged consumers to trade in their old vehicles for a new flex model.

Bifuel cars have rapidly taken over the automobile and light commer-cial vehicle market in Brazil, now ac-counting for about 85% of new vehicle sales. Since 2003 over four million units have left the assembly lines.

exPorts – In 2006 exports reached 790,000 automobiles and light commercial vehicles. In 2007 about 750,000 units will be exported from Brazil.

Of the thirteen light vehicle plants installed in Brazil, seven produce automobiles and light commercial vehicles: Fiat, Ford, General Mo-tors, MercedesBenz, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Renault, and Volkswagen. Two Toyota and Honda – only make automobiles. Four, Agrale, Iveco, Mitsubishi and Nissan, make only light commercial vehicles, with the first two also operating in the truck and bus segments.

The strong growth of the domestic light vehicle market has been supported by a set of macroeconomic factors:

• Greater price stability and predictability, with annual inflation of around 4%;

• A fall in unemployment to below 10%;

• Constant increase in income. Average income for workers in Brazil rose by 2.5% between 2006 and 2007 alone;

• Significant growth in the population aged between 20 to 30 years of age, which is precisely when people most buy cars;

• Large potential market, as in Brazil there are eight people per vehicle, which is a lower index than in neighboring countries such as Argentina, where it is 5.7;

• Lower interest rates, longer repayment plans, and fast credit growth – the most important factor for automobile purchases.

The performance by Brazilian

plants in 2007 will make Brazil the

seventh or eighth largest light vehicle

producer in the world.
