ARALUEN WINDOW PROJECT

Yirara students worked throughout the year designing and making a series of stained glass windows which have been installed in the main foyer of the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs.

Ms Cedar Priest, a stained glass artist taught the students and supervised the design and then the making of the windows which depict modern Aboriginal

designs.

The students involved in the project were:

Kevin Anderson and Luke Johnson with one of the

WALL MURAL

Yirara had the services of Malcolm King as an "Artist in Residence" for most of 3rd term. During this time, we managed to complete 2 major projects. The first was the painting of a 30m wall mural shown below and the second was the completion of 7 large wall banners depicting scenes from the country where we draw our students from. These banners hang in our dining room.

Both projects were very successful and Yirara is grateful to the Artist in Schools programme and Malcolm King.

VEAR 10/ 1 1 TRIP

In October, the students in Year 10/11 went on a tour to Sydney, Canberra, Wollongong and Gosford in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

The trip was enjoyed by everyone who went. We stayed at the Canberra Hotel in Sydney and visited Manly Marineland, Old Sydney Town, Taronga Park Zoo, Sydney Opera House, John Lysarts Steel Mill, Centre Point Tower and the Rocks Area.

In Wollongong, we had a BBQ tea at Mr. Traynor's parents home before catching the train back to Sydney.

We all had a ride on Sydney's buses, trains, the ferry and hydrofoil.

In Canberra we stayed at the Gowrie Hotel and went on a tour with Ansett Pioneer on the first afternoon in Canberra and we visited Parliament House. The coach driver took us back to the hotel and after tea, he came and took us to the lookouts over Canberra. We also visited the Royal Mint, the Telecom Tower, Australian War Memorial, the High Court, National Art Gallery and Duntroon Military College.

1983 FLOODS

In March, most of Central Australia experienced very bad flooding.

Alice Springs was badly damaged by the Todd River breaking its banks in a number of places.

Yirara College was cut off from town for 3½ days. The water was about 3 inches deep around the college grounds. The power was off for a few days which made it difficult to do anything after dark.

The Old Timers Home was evacuated and all the patients came to Yirara.

At one stage the water was over the railway line going through Heavitree Gap.

VOLLEYBALL TRIP We didn't have much time for sightseeing, but did get to the Zoo. We also went ice skating including Glen and Randall and the others watched. We went shopping one day and also on Friday night. The girls were quite amazed at some of the high prices of things in the shops. Connie wasn't too sure about escalators,

ROLF HARRIS

We had a fun day when Rolf Harris visited the

college as part of his T.V. programme. He came with

his camera crew to talk to students.

While he was at the college, he helped paint the

FORMER STUDENTS REUNION

The Former Students' Reunion was held in conjunction with the College's 10th Birthday celebrations.

Twenty former students returned to the college for their meeting on Thursday, October 13th. They came from different communities. For some, it was the first time they had been back since leaving Yirara. Many who returned were students in the early years of the College.

Some staff joined the Former Students for an informal meal in the Staff room - during this time, there was a lot of talk about "their days". Then the present students played games of basketball against the former students.

In the evening, we viewed slides and photos from the College, beginning in 1973 and the years following.

Some former students attended the Yirara College Council meeting and attended the 10th Birthday Party on Friday and stayed on to the Open Day Fete on Saturday.

READING GROUPS

Every morning, from 8.10 until 9.00, all except Year 10B/11 students go to their Reading Group. These groups are made up of blokes and girls from different classes and students are with people who read all their level.

During their Reading time, students may be reading privately, learning about the way that words or sentences are built in English or looking closely at the meaning of stories.

For the really good readers, there is a special literature programme. In these two groups, students read novels together and study them to see what the author is really trying to say, how the characters are built and what the story is about. Some books studied by the top group this year are "Of Mice and Men" "Mum Shirl", "And the Big Men Fly" (a play).

,

Reading groups are a very important way of helping students to raise their standards in all oth b" 12

AVERS ROCK TRIP

We left for Ayers Rock on Monday 12th September -9C and 7D with Billy Larry, Doug Marmion and Fran Robertson.

The first place we stopped at were the Meteorite Craters at Henbury. These are some of the biggest Meteorite craters in the world.

People used to stop here; we know because we found stone axe and spear heads and grinding stones. We also saw lots of chips.

There were lots of different types of rocks in the area.

There was one really big crater. It was made when a big rock came flying through space and landed on the

On Tuesday night we went to Yulara to watch the Amata women dancing the seven sisters. One little girl, Alison Penn, was dancing with the women.

On Wednesday, we climbed Ayers Rock. The hardest part was going up - there was a chain to hang on to. When we came down, we found lots of iii.

We had lunch at Yulara School. We met lots of students from the school and had a long talk with Mr. Pearson and the other teachers. We went swimming in the pool there.

We drove to the new airport to have a look. It's very fancy.

When we went to Katatjulta, some of us walked through a valley. It was very green and the rocks were very high. We left at sunset. On the way back we saw a rabbit and some big kangaroos. We also saw some beautiful green birds with blue stripes around their Earth. As it came near the Earth, it started to burn up - it necks. was a big shooting star or meteorite. Some of the rock

didn't burn. You can see some of it in "The Residency" in town. We went to the Uluru camp that night to visit people.

For tea we had chops and potatoes. We all did our own washing up for all the meals. In the morning we cleaned up the school, cleaned the bus and loaded it, then set off for Ayers Rock.

On the way, we stopped for quandongs. Later we stopped at a big salt lake. It was sandy with lots of trees.

We could see Ayers Rock (Uluru) and the Olgas (Katatjulta) for a long time before we got there. When we arrived we went to the Park Rangers' Office. We looked at slides about Uluru and Katatjulta. We also saw photos of Yira'ra students and displays of rocks, insects and artifacts.

After lunch we went to Mutitjula and Billy told us some stories about the waterhole and the rocks. After that we drove slowly around the rock so that we could look at all the different parts of it.

COMPUTER EDUCATION AMATA,AREYONGA1 DOCKER,

PIPALYATJARA.ERNABELLA, This year Yirara College got its first computers. Three V- 20 computers for use in the typing class and one Apple I le computer for the Transition Education Programme.

In typing, the machines are used to give students practice to increase their speed.

The Transition Education students are being taught how to operate and run programmes on the Apple computer. This is to help develop their skills and understanding enough for them to use word processing programmes like Zardax. We think that word processing will help students improve their reporting and creative writing skills, by making it easier to move words, sentences and paragraphs around, add words, remove words and change whole sections of writing. When the writer is satisfied, a final copy can be printed out to be kept as a record of what has been done.

Computers are being used to help make programmes more interesting and effective. Next year, the College hopes to buy more of them so that all Yirara College students can develop keyboard skills and become computer literate.

John Carson and Keith Herbert operating the computer.

VIRARA FUN RUN

The annual Fun Run was held on 30th August. Lots of people from all sections of the Yirara community are encouraged to run in this event: students, teachers, houseparents, cooks, gardeners, etc. The number of people running this year was really good: 83 compared with 5 5 last year.

The Fun Run went on the clay pans at the back of Yirara College and then past the Mac Donnell Trucking Yards to the Stua rt Highway.

People were able to run 2, 4, 6 , or 8 kilometres. Lots of prizes were handed out by Mr. Deslandes at the finish. The kitchen prepared two special cakes as prizes for the Best Blokes and the Girls Home Group. These were won by Miss Priestley's and Mr. Smith's Home Groups.

I NTE RCO LLEG I ATE

The annual Intercolleg iate Meeting was held at Yirara this year in October. As is the usual practice, teams from Yirara and Kormilda competed, along with a combined team from Alice Springs High School and Sadadeen High School.

Many sports were played dur ing the week. They included volleyball, groundball, korfball, basketball, touch rugby, soccer, softball, speedball, swi mming, cross-country, ten pin bowling and athletics. Competition in these sports was sometimes a l i ttle intense but, on most occasions, students were very good and did not lose sight of what Intercollegiate was all about: social isat ion through sport.

A debate was also held. The topic was whether or not Intercollegiate meetings should be more competit ive. The very interest ing result was that Intercollegiate should not become more competi t ive.

Some magnif icent social events were also held. They included a bar-b-que at the Telegraph Station and the Presentat ion Dance.

The pri zes for the Yirara bloke and the Y irara g irl who part ic ipated very well, both socially and in sport, were won by Tony Jack and Valma Warra. Congratulations to those two people!

The students who part icipated in this years Intercollegiate were:

MAY DAY SPORTS CARNIVAL

Last Monday all of the Yirara students went to Anzac Oval for the May Day Sports Carnival and many students entered into the different competitions there.

Nearly all of the girls and some of the blokes ran in the 100 metres for their age groups. Results:-

Under 13 Boys Under 13 Girls

Under 15 Boys

Under 15 Girls

Womens Open 100 : Gir ls Under 17 (100) :-

1st Kerry Smiler (14.1 seconds) 3rd Patsy Ross

1st Campbell Herbert (13.1 seconds) 3rd Randall Williams 2nd Sarah Lynch 3rd M . O' Keefe

2nd M. O' Keefe 3rd M. O' Keefe

A novelty event was the Wheelbarrow Crush where Yirara came second with 1 7 people squeezed into a wheelbarrow. Even Mr. Benz was in the barrow. The team that won had 20 little children in their barrow. So, well done Yirara.

Lots of girls entered the Ladies Rolling Pin Throw, M. O' Keefe came 4th. Well done M aryanne and the rest of the girls that entered.

Kevin Grant was the only Yirara student who entered the Open High Jump. K. G. did very well and came fourth with a jump of 1 .6 metres.

The Tail Throw competition was a new event for lots of Yirara students who entered. In the girls U15 , Sarah White came 2nd and Belinda M anfong came 3rd. Belinda even entered the Open Tail Competition where there was only adults competing and she came 3rd with a throw of 30.6 metres. Well done Belinda.

In the girls U1 7 Tug of War, Yirara had two teams. The first team was M. O' K. (capt. ) , Belinda, Connie, Chookie, Alison, Cindy & Joy. The second team was Connie (capt. ) , Rita, Sarah W., Roberta, Elsie, Edith and Vivian. M . O' K's team finally beat the Little Athletics team, with a lot of people from town cheering them on. They all won a box of chocolates.

About 1 5 students entered the Alice Springs Gift but unfortunately didn't win a prize, but good on you all for having a go.

VO LLEYBALL

With the complet ion of the night t ime volleyball

pleasing to report that the gi rls A Grade team made it to

Roxanne Kenny and Connie Riley all played exceptionally

well and thei r part ic ipation in the Sadadeen team gave

the side added strength. Vast improvement was noted

N ETBALL

_ 1 983 has been a very good year for Netball. S i xty

Although the team didn't reach the semi- f inals, the blokes had many close games during the season and only the occasional absence of some key players prevented the team progressing fu rther. The blokes displayed a remarkable aptitude for the game and the i r ball skills were often remarked upon by fellow opponents and spectators.

H OC KEY

The gi rls who played Hockey this year, had to tra in hard. Three t imes a week, learning to push, ru n and control the ball which is qu i te hard when you have never played before. The gi rls not only learnt to play Hockey but also learnt that just because you come from a different place, didn't mean you couldn't be friends The g 1 rls

SCH OO L R E PO RT

Some years of specialization and hard work_

in

curriculum development by teachers has been bearing

fruit in 1982.

Because teachers have understood their end points, the school has continued to develop as academic "feel".

Students really do understand that education is the

reason for their being at Yirara College. This year seven

students passed the apprenticeship exam in Year 10

and two more passed the Mathematics components of

that examination. Both components of this exam

require a higher level of skills than the Core Curriculum Maths and English.

In 1984 , there will be thirty-six students who, we hope, will receive their Junior Secondary School Certificate. We expect that most areas of the Core will have been mastered by them.

Recognition by all teachers that English language development is the foundation of all school learning at Yirara, has meant that across the curriculum, teachers are taking this into account as they prepare their program me.

Success, itself, is a m otivator. Younger students, seeing the confidence and purposeful air of their elders, are following the example that they set.

Homework on M onday and Thursday for 1 ½ hours Twelve of these students have been in the " B" each night has continued to provide re-inforcement for

Students learn to programme has played a large part in their achievements take responsibility for their work and are obliged to so far. They were the first year, in Year 7 to be involved 1 think about written instructions that are left by teachers. in the programme, and AW1 and AW2 provided the Homework has helped students to gain confidence in basis of their language work since then. their own ability to sort out problems.
