    To learn vehicle subsystem and component structures, operation principlesand design details using three vehicle chassis models.

    / ntroduction

    Vehicle is a complex system which consists of many subsystems andcomponents such as engine, transmission, steering, brakes, suspensions,prop shaft, differential, axles, etc.. Most of the subsystems and componentsare designed and supplied from tier suppliers. The design and structuredetails of the subsystems and components may be black boxes to OMengineers. The role of !utomotive OM engineers is to ensure that the vehiclesubsystems and components reach their design targets, that is to integrate

    them into a vehicle in a frame of time and cost and to meet the whole vehicledesign and "uality targets.

    #t is very helpful for automotive engineers to understand basic design,structure features and operation principles of every vehicle subsystem andcomponent in order to achieve optimi$ed system performances. The followingthree chassis models are used to serve the purpose.

    0 Vehicle !hassis Models

    %hown in &igures ' is (hassis Model )' where the basic design and structurefeatures of subsystems such as engine, transmission, differential, axles,steering, brakes, electrical and suspensions and components such as propshaft and exhaust can be observed.

    (hassis Model )* consists of front brake discs with callipers and rear parkingbrakes. The braking paddle is connected with a braking booster and fluiddistribution pump. +aking pressure is indicated by a pressure gauge. +rakingtriggers braking lights powered by a '* Volts battery.
