President’s CornerI have been involved for a number of years with Autism Society Canada (ASC), but as the newly elected President, I have become even more aware of the need for Autism Society Canada to play a paramount role in the Canadian autism landscape. ASC’s mission is to work with our many partners to address the national priorities of the autism community, and we continue to advocate and lobby at the federal level.

Our member societies across the country address challenges at the provincial and territorial level. Each of these societies works on a number of provincial issues related to health, social services, and education, as well as the impact these have on individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorders, or ASDs.

To complement this, Autism Society Canada maintains a national discourse on behalf of the ASD community through the support of its member societies and the individuals they represent. Together we show unity and strength as the national voice for all autism stakeholders.

ASC was involved in a number of initiatives this year, including:

- Participating at the United Nations Round Table on the Convention on Disability Issues,

- Debating the merits of Bill S-210 at a Senate Committee Hearing,

- Promoting the needs of ASD stakeholders at the Liberal Party’s Social Committee on Autism,

- Shaping the research agenda as a member of the Steering Committee for The Canadian Autism Intervention Research Network (CAIRN) in preparation of their Canadian research symposium.

I strongly believe Autism Society Canada is the only Canadian organization capable of maintaining a pan-Canadian connection with autism stakeholders’ communities throughout the country. Our collaborative network built with each of our provincial and territorial societies enables us to have a direct impact on the lives of families and individuals living with an ASD.

something personal from the PresidentEver since my son was diagnosed 12 years ago, I have been involved with the Autism Society of British Columbia (ASBC). I served as a Director of the Board for ASBC for a number of years and have been the President of ASBC for the last 4 years.

As Autism Society Canada’s President, I remain an active proponent of a strong unified national voice for those touched by ASD. The work needed to support this vision however, is only successful because of the dedication and collaboration of the Directors of the Board of Autism Society Canada. These directors, who already play an active role in their own provinces, come together and support our national efforts.

I must express my sincere gratitude for this volunteer team as well as to our staff members: Lynn Andrews, ASC’s Website Development and Information Services Coordinator; Abhinava Kumar, our Web Support; and Kathleen Provost, ASC’s Executive Director, who all tirelessly continue to deliver the programs that we prioritize and offer to the autism community.

Founded in 1976, Autism Society Canada (ASC) is proud of the leadership role it has played for over 34 years in Canada’s autism community. Our success is built on the partnerships that we created and maintain with our member societies. This positive relationship brings grassroots issues to a national platform, while at the same time informing local societies about important national issues that affect their communities.

ASC and its website are often the first point of contact for parents and other family members who are concerned about their loved ones or for people who themselves have received a recent diagnosis. As the only bilingual national organization in the autism community, we are committed to the gathering and dissemination of information on ASDs across the lifespan of the individual. This resource is accessible to all Canadians in both official languages via our website, as well as regionally via our member societies.

AsC’s visionThat people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) achieve their individual potential and that they and their families have universal access to the resources they require.

AsC’s missionTo work with our many partners to address the national priorities facing the autism community.

AsC’s GoAls- To promote federal policies, programs, and legislation that respond to the needs of the Autism community;

- To promote the rights of families and individuals with ASDs to all treatments and services that work in the best interests of the individual with an ASD;

- To promote the rights of families and individuals to universal access to all treatments and services that work in the best interests of the individual with an ASD;

- To increase awareness and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders and acceptance and participation of individuals with ASDs in society;

- To promote intervention research that will provide individuals with ASDs and their families with practical support.

ACtivity rePort 2009 | 2010A year in review across the country with Austism society Canada

ASC was present at Parliament Hill, as a founding member of the Canadian ASD Alliance (CASDA), to help raise awareness amongst federal government representatives from across the country.

To celebrate World Autism Awareness Day, ASC proposed a Canadian Charter of Rights for Persons with Autism. ASC also designed a virtual survey tool to ensure all Canadians could be engaged and to provide feedback.

ASC issued a Press Release in support of Bill C-360, “An Act to amend the Canada Health Act (Autism Spectrum Disorder)”, introduced by M.P. Glenn Thibeault.

ASC was invited as a stakeholder to the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology regarding Bill S-210, “An Act respecting World Autism Awareness Day” in Canada.

ASC was a participant at the National Round Table coordinated by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

ASC coordinated and led the First Research meeting between Canadian Researchers and ASC’s Advisory Committee members. The members of this committee are all adults living with an ASD.

ASC was the recipient of the proceeds of a Golf Tournament held for our benefit in Oshawa.

ASC was able to distribute thousands of dollars to each of its provincial & territorial societies thanks to the proceeds from Jonathan Howard and his “Run the Dream” pan-Canadian run.

ASC was the “charity of choice” for Doug Gilmour’s Charity Chocolate Bars sold in a number of provinces across the country.

ASC joined in celebrating Canadian Autism Awareness Month (CAAM) with the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health. Together we applauded the work of all stakeholders in Canada in their untiring efforts in

support of all Canadians living with an ASD as well as their families and caregivers.

Representatives from ASC societies and all eight Advisory Committee members participated in the CAIRN (Canadian Autism Intervention Research Network) Symposium on Research in Toronto.

ACtivity rePort 2009 | 2010 Cont’d

ASC continued to appeal to its supporters and offered a Corporate Campaign Kit to over 300 corporations across the country.

ASC continued to provide a voice for the members of its Advisory Committee of adults living with an ASD, and added new profiles of its committee members on its website www.autismsocietycanada.ca.

ASC was the only national organization, amongst the autism community members, invited to speak on autism at the Liberal Party’s Social Committee. This was a wonderful opportunity to highlight Canada’s

needs in regards to individuals living with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families across the country.

ASC received funds from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) under the Social Development Partnership Program for the creation of a virtual resource centre to be shared with all the ASC member societies as well as the general public.

messAGe from the exeCutive direCtor

As Executive Director, my role is one of support for Autism Society Canada’s membership. Last year, members determined that ASC had a leadership role to play in Canada. As a result, I became involved in a few key Canadian initiatives for ASC in addition to providing ongoing operational support.

ASC is an active member of the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH), which enables collaboration and networking with a number of Canadian organizations, service providers and stakeholder representatives. This year, I had the pleasure of chairing the 7th edition of Mental Illness Awareness Week held in October, which included a Recognition Gala in Ottawa on October 3rd. This event was attended by over 350 politicians, public servants and community leaders, and so provided an excellent opportunity to draw attention to the individual challenges faced by all Canadians living with an ASD.

Autism Society Canada’s membership also reconfirmed that ASC has a leadership role to play in helping to shape federal policies. Consequently, I act as one of three leadership members to help the Canadian ASD Alliance (CASDA) engage and partner with other autism stakeholder organizations. CASDA is now a leading national Alliance helping to promote the development of a Canadian Autism Strategy. This and previously mentioned activities demonstrated that ASC continues to be a partner of choice for the federal government.

ASC’s provincial and territorial societies earmarked 2009-2010 as a year to intensity communication and collaboration so that the societies can further complement each other. Our great strength is the sharing of best practices, and this has helped make ASC into a leading national voice in the field of autism. Every day, both electronically and via our phone line, we continue to provide a Canadian “hub” of resources and information on ASD related matters. Over the last 12 months, I have worked very diligently to find funding partners to sustain and improve our capacity to share these resources. The year ahead will yet again showcase ASC’s leadership role in providing unbiased information and resources online. On a variety of topics, including all treatments, relevant to the lifespan of individuals with ASDs. This resource is intended for all individuals living with an ASD and their families, for policy makers, for service providers, for researchers and for many others across Canada.

I would also like to mention that our new web resource also serves as a showcase for a wide range of creative work, some of which is produced by people living with ASDs. This is another example of ASC’s creativity in our endeavour to better understand ASDs. In closing, I would like to express my gratitude to the volunteers and staff that comprise ASC’s team. We have a dedicated group of committed people from across the country who strive to bring together and share the positive lessons of every situation. ASC’s success is only possible because of this incredible commitment.

10 2009-2010 overall financial performance

The Statement of Operations shows that for the 2009 – 2010 year, total expenses exceeded total revenues by $11,624. As in the previous year, a deficit was anticipated. However, the $11,624 deficit was less than the planned deficit of $28,580 reflected in the 2009 – 2010 approved annual budget. At March 31, 2010, ASC’s bank balance was $38,401.

As a result, ASC is in a relatively healthy financial position at the end of the 2009 – 2010 fiscal year looking forward to the 2010-2011 year. In fact, at June 30, 2010, ASC’s cash balance was $129,873. ASC’s financial statements thus reflect the careful and conservative financial management practiced by the Executive Director, the Finance & Audit Committee, and the Board of Directors.

2009-2010 General and Administrative expensesGeneral and Administrative Expenses decreased by slightly more than $5,000 from $23,758 to $18,487. The main factors contributing to this decrease are:

- Office expenses decreased by approximately $4,700 from $9,300 to $4,578. $1,700 of the decrease is office expenses reclassified to fundraising expenses. The remaining decrease reflects more efficient operations.

- Insurance expense went down by $700 from $1,564 to $864—while maintaining the same coverage.

- The decrease of about $5,000 in Administrative services relates to the fact that fewer administrative hours were worked in 2010 by the Executive Director and the Website Co-ordinator. It should be noted that this large decrease in administrative expense was slightly off-set by a small increase in office costs from $4,578 in 2009 to $5,950 in 2010—this increase of about $1,300 in administrative expenses was due to work done by administrative support persons other than the Executive Director and paid at a lower rate.

- Bookkeeping expenses were $5,200 less because our bookkeeper, Henschell Business Services Inc., chose ASC as a beneficiary of a reduced hourly rate for the 2009 – 2010 fiscal year.

treAsurer’s rePortfinancial highlightsThe Finance and Audit committee closely monitors all expenses and revenues for the society, acting as the eyes and the ears of the board. We would like to thank our bookkeepers Henschel Business Services Inc. for their support.

In the last 12 months, by means of several teleconferences, the Committee monitored year-to-date financial results, reviewed and presented to the Board a budget for 2010-2011 as well as the 2009-2010 audited financial statements.

Nancy Adams, CA (British Columbia)

2009-2010 revenuesIn our last fiscal year donations revenues increased by approximately $13,000. This net change was mainly due to:

- Donations from individuals, which increased from approximately $44,000 to $48,000—a $4,000 increase (9%).

- Donations from foundations, which nearly doubled from $11,000 to $21,500.

- Corporate donations, which decreased by $1,000—from $39,000 in 2008 – 2009 to $38,000 in 2009-2010. The largest corporate donation was $20,000 from Ninety Three Hockey Inc.

- Funds received in the summer of 2009, raised through a golf tournament organized by Christine Dade.

2009-2010 Program expensesTotal Program Expenses decreased by approximately $3,000 from $169,222 to $166,020—a 2% decrease from the prior year. The elements making up this decrease are:

- Website expenses went from $26,901 to $23,966 - attributable to a reduction in hours worked by Lynn Andrews.

- Governance expenses decreased by $3,000, due to a reduction of $7,400 in Executive Director hours. This reduction in part reflects our effort to maximize hours chargeable to ASC’s main charitable program (public awareness & referral).

- Fundraising expenses increased by approximately $13,000 largely because of the direct cost of organizing the June 2009 golf tournament for ASC. Administration cost reclassification also contributed to the increase.

- Policy Development expenses went from $7,657 to $1,748—a $5,900 reduction. This is due to a combination of budgeted expenses that were not realized: expenses in support of the Canadian ASD Alliance, and the cost of lobbying party leaders and elected MPs.
