About Autism

“Autism is a severe disorder of brain function marked by problems with social contact, intelligence, and language, together with ritualistic or compulsive behavior and bizarre responses to the environment.” (Gale Science)

About Autism

Some people that are autistic are born with it, others develop it throughout their lifetime

The person who first identified autism was Dr. Leo Kanner

Autism was first discovered in the 1940’s (Wood)

Autism Characteristics

People are able to realize autism on a baby between 24 and 30 months

Parents will notice that their child will start flapping their arms more, and will delay their play habits. (Wood)

Symptoms

For Autism, the symptoms differ everyday due to the child’s behavior.

Children with Autism will not be socially active. (Wood)

Life time effect/ Care needed

Some people with autism suffer from other disorders as well, including seizures, mental retardation, and genetic disorders, such as fragile X syndrome. (Salem Press)

There is no cure for autism but doctors do observe communication skills and also behavior (Wood)

Treatment/ How I can help

To improve their odds of learning, autistic children attend special education program

I can help someone with autism by attending a special education class and help them with their learning and communication skills. (Wood)
