Before we walk through how to read the csv files let me explain how I came to the conclusion of what metrics to use for determining which keywords are easy and which ones to ignore

Traditionally the first stop for almost everyone is using Keyword Planner, this worked at one time but started to show lot's and lot's of issues starting in the year 2000 the details of why are beyond the scope of this document

As any Engineer knows you must look at the facts

So what are the facts?

Keyword planner is not the facts there is no correlation of who ranks and why on page one of Google

So you must look at the actual search results

As you may already know I develop software, specifically for trying to understand why websites rank on the Google Search Engine Results

At one time when adsense was the craze I created software that created me over 10 million pages with adsense on them

It was easy to rank on page one then, but as we know things are very much different now

Over the years my software included every known way SEOers and Marketers try to figure out why websites rank in the SERPs until the arrival of Moz metrics

When Moz made available their API's available for 3rd party users I incorporated this into my softwareinitially I used all of Moz's metrics

After performing countless of tests I started to eliminate any metric that did not show consistent results for ranking in Google with my test sites

I wanted to have the least amount of metrics to quickly know if ranking on page one was easy or hard

I had over 20 metrics incorporated into my software at one point

When Google started to favor brand and power-players in their search index the process of elimination started to become clearer and clearer for what choices to eliminate

This even became even easier with the latest panda, hummingbird and whatever updates was occurring with Google

This was the first time in Google history where Google exposed their algorithm to what it does, this

was the biggest smoking gun in the history of Google

As with any software including Googles SERPs nothing is perfect, holes and weaknesses will exist because exceptions occur regardless

My goal was to pick one metric if possible, I could look at and know when looking at the metric I would know what kind of competition resided on page one of Google

By knowing this it would be immediately obvious if I would be wasting my time or it required further investigation

I needed a metric that would expose what Google considers Authority, because this is what Google started doing, ranking mostly authority sites, especially the power-players

I eventually settled for Moz Domain Authority because all the trust factors, links etc… were factored into it's calculation so it made it very easy to know who the power players where

In my opinion it is pretty accurate what your chances are to get a page one placing

You can go to the Moz site and read all about their metrics, I included just a short brief definition of what I just said by Moz

“Domain Authority is a score (on a 100-point scale) developed by Moz that predicts how well a websitewill rank on search engines. Use Domain Authority when comparing one site to another or tracking the “strength” of your website over time. We calculate this metric by combining all of our other link metrics—linking root domains, number of total links, into a single score.”

You have two ways to use domain authority either by software at

Either way both will show you the domain authority on Google's SERPs

With either the Moz bar or my software pay particular attention to the values and the what types of sitesare associated with the values and you will understand this metric is fairly accurate for the lower numbers and especially the higher number

The numbers in the middle are maybe up for grabs if they are accurate, but I suspect Moz is on the money for them also

So let's get to the meat of this now

Here is how to use the csv files

Open the csv file in a spread sheet software, I use LibreOffice, but any software that can read csv files can read these files

This is what one of the files will look like

Next highlight all the results like this

Next sort the domain authority column, I like low to high how you sort is up to you

This has organized all the keywords by domain authority for page one

I look for how many keywords have DA Values less than 60

Easy is values 0-39 crème of the crop, easy to rank many times just keyword in titleMedium Hard 40-59 requires more investigation, they will need more work to rank like backlinkingHard 60-100 I avoid these keywords

These numbers are an average of all the websites that are on page one, the accuracy may vary slightly but overall your looking for instant confirmation if your wasting your time or the keyword itself requires more research

Don't get hung up with the actual number we are using this value only as a filter to weed out keywords that are impossible to rank for

I mentioned previously that all software is subjective to anomalies

So don't get upset if my numbers are different than what you actually get there is room for error because we are using this as a filter

In addition since we are using a 3rd party software I have no control over what is pulled from Moz and their accuracy

Don't pay attention to the ad's column Google just made major changes to adwords being displayed in the SERPs, I did use this for finding out where the money is flowing for advertising but I am waiting for Google to settle down with it's code

The last column is links

The software I designed tries to identify what kind of websites are on page one

The second csv file shows this and we will walk through it shortly

I use the first file to understand how competitive a keyword group is, if I find a group of keywords that falls through the crack of a very competitive niche it warrants looking at it in much greater detail

If I find a keyword group is too competitive with the majority of the DA values over 60 I move on by either finding new keywords for that particular niche or just dropping that niche and moving on to something else that interest me

File one is the quick filter to either move on or investigate

File two is where I investigate in detail who is on page one, it is the actual first page results as you see in the image below

This is where are the goodies are

You have 7 columns

Keyword, URL, Ad Count, DA value, Position on page one, Site Type, Match Word

Most of this is pretty much self explanatory

Site types need a little more explanation

What we did is looked at every website on page one to determine what kind of site got to page one

If you do this manually you will know instantly what kind of website resides in the top ten

By using software we needed to read the source code for every website

I selected a small amount of site types that work well for understanding what kind of authority sites Google ranks

Since we are reading source code the last column can get weird at times without actually going to it andmaking the final determination what it actually is

When you look at the site types and the DA Values together this is where the AHA comes in and how I chose DA as a primary metric for filtering out keywords dominated by these powerplayers

Once you understand this the bigger picture on what Google is doing starts to reveal itself

You will find groups of keywords not dominated by powerplayers and this is where it starts getting interesting why?

Over time my determination has been that the powerplayers don't have enough relevant content to dominate page one, if you view the videos in my youtube channel I point this out multiple times including a trick on how to find keywords weak with relevant content by knowing how to make your sorts

Don't be afraid to sort the columns and group them to your choosing

One way how I use this data once I group them is to look for power sites I can leave my links

I sorted site type column and you can see all the blogs that rank on page one of Google above, power blogs that Google has judged as relevant to the keywords at the left

Now Google just exposed the best backlinking source for leaving comments, no more random

Just remember if you spam, more than likely you will not get your comment published but if you leave a well thought out comment that is relevant and if you stoke the owners ego a little ;) you might get your comment published
