What is an auteur Auteur is a French word meaning author and is a film
maker who influences their movies so much that they are regarded as an author, where as a director is given the vision of a film by the producer. An auteur also retain creative control and use a series of recognisable themes and stylistics that are consistent throughout all their films, for example Tim Burton and Quentin Tarantino are both auteur’s both having a specific theme and style throughout their films
Auteur- ‘someone who brings something genuinely personal to his subject instead of producing a tasteful accurate but lifeless rendering of the original material .
Origin of Auteur theory
The theory was advocated in 1954 and was influenced by 2 people the first being François Truffaut, and second being Andrew Sarris who used the auteur theory to analyse what defines serious work through the study of respected directors within the film industry and there films .
There are no good and bad movies, only good and bad directors“- François Truffaut
Tim Burton Tim Burton is a good example of an
auteur having the same consistent theme throughout all his films. The genre of Burtons movies is mainly horror which have a very dark, gothic and supernatural feel to them. Burton also has a love for British actors and uses them in most of his movies especially Johnny Depp, who he has worked with many times and has starring in a lot of his films like Edward scissor Hands and Sweeny Todd.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_hgrfZVlJA&feature=player_detailpage
Quentin Tarantino
Throughout his films there is a consistent theme of violence and the usage of weapons, his films also contain vast amounts of dialogue which means the audience have to listen and follow the film carefully to understand the plot. Tarantino also has the power to make the viewer laugh, gasp, gag, and yell in just one scene

Alfred Hitchcock His cameo style is one of the many things that set
Hitchcock apart from his fellow directors. From the blonde femme fatales, the beleaguered male leads, the very thought of an innocent man or woman being accused of something they did not do…the list goes on, but the point is that you can start watching Vertigo halfway through (although why in the world you would want to is beyond me) and know immediately that it’s an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Even to surface elements, such as using famous actors like James Stewart and Cary Grant multiple times, proves Hitchcock’s auteur status. He’s one of the first and best.
