Editorial
Dear fellow Austrians,
Dear friends of Austria,
Last month certainly was a very Red-White-Red one ! Austria was in the limelight here in Hong Kong and
ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA certainly further increased the profile in the region: Starting with the high-level
Hong Kong Austria Start-up Round Table with State Secretary Dr Mahrer and some 40+ movers and
shakers discussing disruptive and new methods to work together. Flollowed by the 2nd Sino-Austrian
Investor Conference and a number of VIPs from Austria never seen before atracting 200+ highlevel
investors. And last but not least a wonderful Austrian National Day reception by our colleagues from the
Consulate. For a summary on recent events please refer to the following pages.
Meanwhile, Mainland China recorded a GDP growth of 6.9 % in the third quarter, substantially higher than
anyone would have expected considering the lean industrial growth and the slump on the Shanghai stock
exchange. At any rate, as the new Five-Year-Plan (2016-2020) is currently under discussion behind closed
doors in Beijing, China certainly will push forward reform in a number of areas. On the business side, we
expect the new Five-Year-Plan to focus ever more on fostering new and modern „high-tech“ industries,
improving the environment through heavy investment in related technologies and putting in place
measures to stimulate consumer demand.
Taking into account these developments, ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Hong Kong and Guangzhou have set their
joint priorities for the last quarter of 2015 as well as for 2016 likewise. Austrian environmental technologies
have been on display at the Energy Conservation Expo this October in Guangzhou and will be so again at
South China’s largest environmental fair, IE Expo, from 10 to 12 November. We are currently preparing an
Austrian group pavilion for next year´s Asia Eco Expo. Intersted parties can already register with us.
In November, we expect an Austrian aeronautics delegation to touch down at five locations in China to
discuss supply opportunities with China’s relevant aero companies. Last not least, rising consumer
demand opens new markets for Austria’s various delicacies as well, and as a start, Austrian excellent cold
climate wines will be on show in Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shanghai.
As always, we hope you will find this newsletter informative and enjoy the read. Should you have any
questions, problems, issues, suggestions or ideas, please reach out and get in touch with our offices! Feel
free to forward this newsletter to those interested in doing business with and in Austria!
Yours sincerely,
Christian H. Schierer Dietmar Schwank

Hong Kong & Austria: Start-up bridge into Asia & the CEE region
October 19th, 2015 In co-operation with InvestHK, the “1st Austria-Hong Kong Start-
up Roundtable”, organised by ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA, took place at
the iconic PMQ in Hong Kong providing a platform for founders,
investors and a wide mix of 40+ movers and shakers from the
start-up ecosystem both from Austria and Hong Kong. In a
preceding bilateral meeting the Austrian State Secretary in the
Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy, Harald
Mahrer met with Mr Nicholas Yang Wei-hsiung, Special
Government Advisor for Innovation, Technology & Start-ups of the
Hong Kong SAR government to discuss an in-depth co-operation
programme and to exchange views. Due to his dedication to the
start-up scene Harald Mahrer is also known as the Austrian
government's unofficial "Mr Start-up". As a former founder,
entrepreneur and business angel, he is committed to creating the
best possible framework conditions and to making Austria the
number one start-up hotspot. Austria being a partner
organisation of Hong Kong´s
StartmeupHK-Festival 2016 is
striving to increase further its
exposure and profile especially in
the field of R&D and Hidden
Champions spin-offs. Forbes
recently ranked Hong Kong as
“Important Tech Capital to
Watch” after Silicon Valley and New York. According to a joint study by
Google and CUHK in 2014, the city’s ecosystem of young businesses has
expanded by almost 300% in the last 5 years. Currently Austria is enjoying
an entrepreneurial renaissance: a striving start-up scene and with the
Pioneers Festival a world renowned start-up programme as well as new
start-up funding schemes are only a few highlights. On the one hand this
roundtable was an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced movers
and shakers like AngelVest, Brinc, CompareAsiaGroup, Connceted
Thinking Asia, Forbes, Garage Society, HAX, Cyberport, HKDC, HKSTP,
InvestHK, Pioneers, KPMG, Monexo, Nest, PaperClip, PMQ, Prospect
Ventures, Reallifeconnect, Swire, Vistra and more. On the other hand they
themselves could exchange their business experience and introduced their
outstanding ideas and companies. For more information and pictures

Vienna: A rising Start-up Hub A lot of cities claim to be well situated, but little can compete with Vienna.
The location is one of the fundamental reasons for the Viennese start-up
scene’s growing success. Vienna is ideally connected to many European
cities and capitals. Furthermore, Vienna has a unique mix of Western and
Eastern European cultures, making the city the ideal spot to build a
company which can easily expand to the whole European continent.
A start-up ecosystem is strong when a city or region can provide start-
ups easy access to the right support (financial, material and knowledge) in every step of building a
company. Vienna is an ideal city if you wish to learn how to found, grow or run a start-up. Dozens of
organisations, profit and non-profit, such as Austrian start-ups, AWS or the Technical University offer
classes to get the right knowledge to start a company. There is almost not one single working day in
Austria without an event or lecture organised for (future) founders. From pitch training to finance or even
programming, there is always something useful to learn. And the best part? Most of the events are free,
and even no need to register. More and more co-working spaces are also popping up across the town,
where start-ups can work in teams for affordable prices. Finally, Austria is becoming one of Europe’s
hottest spots to get financing. The Dow Jones Venture Capital Report for Q1 2015 states that Austria rose to
fourth position when it comes to Equity Financings into Europe-based Venture capital backed Companies.
Austria holds now a 7% share of the total European Equity financing, raising EUR 173 million during Q1
2015.

UP-COMING BUSINESS AND SOCIAL EVENTS
Canton Fair, Guangzhou October 15th - November 4th, 2015
The fair, generally known as the largest trade and sourcing fair in China with a history of over 50 years, has
the biggest assortment of products, the highest attendance of visitors, and the largest number of business
deals made in all of China. Nevertheless, we expect a slight decrease in the number of visitors and the
volume of deals made this year, as China is moving up the value chain and gradually evolving from an
export economy to one driven by the domestic consumer and investment market. Already at the Spring
Session 2015, a decrease of transaction volumes of 9.64 per cent down to USD 28 billion has been
registered, being the lowest total in six years. Although the downward trend of the past sessions is
expected to continue with the current Fall Session, Canton Fair remains the largest and most important
sourcing fair in China and the world. If you have any enquiries regarding Canton Fair or sourcing in China in
general, please contact ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Guangzhou at [email protected].
