Austrian wine month at FCC, Hong Kong
This month, Austrian wines will be the guest of honour at the Hong Kong Foreign
Correspondent Club (FCC). FCC has decided to promote, for the first time, Austrian wines
during the month of February. During the promotion period, the Club will be selling the
selected wines with special offer to their members together with home delivery promotion.
The Austrian wine that has been chosen is the Edition Berl, Blaufränkisch Reserve 2011
from Burgenland. Edition Berl is a unique expression of Blaufränkisch that demonstrates
that the native Austrian grape variety works wonderfully with long wood ageing (30 months
in French oak). The nose is very expressive with red forest fruits, floral character and
vanilla. On the palate, aromas range from plum to forest fruits with elegance and distinction
and surprisingly smooth tannins. The finish is very long and shows a potential for long
ageing. Want to buy Austrian wines ? Get in touch with us [email protected].
Austria: international hotspot for start-ups Austria’s dynamic and innovative founder scene is one of the youngest
worldwide (average age of 32.3 years) and steadily attracts more international
attention. Forbes Magazine has counted Austria already among the start-up-
hotspots in Europe for 2014. From 110 business formations a year 73% are
start-ups and the share is still rising. The highly skilled young entrepreneurs
focus on the European and global market. Shining examples of worldwide
successful Austrian start-ups are runtastic - a standard fitness-app of the new
Apple watch, shpock - an app which enables direct sales and purchases within a
network of 10 million users, as well as Fastlane - a project which was recently
acquired by Twitter. The Pioneers Festival - a yearly highlight of the start-up
community which takes place in the stunning historic Hofburg palace in Vienna –
brings together 1,600 start-ups from 90 countries and 400 international
investors. Austria´s high quality of life (Vienna has been dubbed the city with the
world’s best quality of life by Mercer), a good funding structure and a dynamically growing start-up-
community attract young entrepreneurs from all over the world.

Paradise for Life-Sciences, Vienna Since the foundation of the first biotech-laboratory in St Marx, district of Vienna, during the ‘90s, Vienna has
developped to a paradise for life-science-start-ups. Even though the
public might not recognise it, but when a pharma-giant as
Boehringer Ingelheim invest EUR 69 millions, then you know that
Vienna is an upcoming life-science-market. In fact, just the number
of companies which work in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry
increased from 2012 to 2016 by 19% up to 216 businesses. During
the same time, the revenues rose by 9% up to EUR 10m. Half of the
companies are not older than 10 years. Since 1997 the City of Vienna
invested EUR 225m and they are planning to invest more in the next
five years to ascend to one of the top 5 places for life-science in
Europe. Companies highlight that especially the easy supply with highly qualified workers is one the main
advantages of Vienna. Yet the branch hopes that the legislation will improve the fiscal conditions in order to
attract more “Business Angels” and “Venture-Capital-Funds”. For further information visit our website.
Global breakthrough in cancer treatment, Innsbruck The start-up biotech company ViraTherapeutics has opened a new research
laboratory in Innsbruck. ViraTherapeutics is developing a new treatment
approach to tumors on the basis of oncolytic viruses that destroy cancer
tissue. The new type of treatment should already be available in this decade
for the benefit of cancer patients for whom current therapies have failed.
The immune vaccination developed in Tyrol to destroy tumors is considered
to be a global breakthrough, in light of the fact that, according to all results
up until now in cell cultures and mouse models, it remains a highly specific
effective vaccination when used in multiple applications, and does not harm healthy cells.
Research premium increased to 12 percent, Austria The research premium in Austria for a company’s in-house research and
contract research will be increased from ten to twelve percent starting in
2016. “The twelve percent is a great signal in favour of the Austrian business location”, says Philipp von Lattorff, CEO of Boehringer Ingelheim Austria. One
of the 2015/16 tax reform measures to strengthen companies operating in
Austria is an increase in the research premium from ten to twelve percent
starting in 2016. This step improves the good business environment which
already exists in Austria for the benefit of corporate innovations, as
confirmed by the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim. The Boehringer Ingelheim group, which
spends EUR 200 million for clinical and non-clinical research annually, employs 1,400 people in Vienna.
Global market leader shifts European HQ, Innsbruck The leading company in the production of mountaineering equipment, Black Diamond, moved their
European headquarter from Basel, Switzerland to Innsbruck, Austria. The company from Salt Lake City,
United States, expects competitive advantages from the central geographic location as well as from the
attractive ecosystem for already settled mountaineering and outdoor-brands. Furthermore Innsbruck itself
is an international established mountaineering destination and at the same time a lively college city. The
strategic objective for Black Diamond is raising their brand awareness and the market share. This
relocation is the result of consequent investments in the business location Tyrol. The good infrastructure
and the location in the middle of Germany, Switzerland and Italy as well as the high education level are the
main advantages of Tyrol.

A day of intern Mr Alexander Mühlendorfer at ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Hong Kong
ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA offers every month Austrian students the chance to participate in an internship at
our office.Considered one of the busiest offices worldwide, our interns really represent a crucial factor with
regard to office work. This month, Mr Alexander Mühlendorfer, from Lower
Austria shares with you his experience in Hong Kong: “After finishing my exchange semester in Boston, United States, I have two months off until the Economic University in Vienna starts again. Therefore I was really happy that I got the chance to be part of the ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA team, in their office in Hong Kong”. So how does a “usual” day in the office look like. My day starts with
a nice and short walk from Sheung Wan to the office. When I arrive at work
before 09:00 hrs, I am friendly greeted by Winnie, Commercial Officer and the
“good soul” of the office. The morning starts with our daily routine task:
Checking, sorting and filing a huge amount of incoming post. We have some 20-
30 requests per day from Austria alone, which gives me the chance to be
updated and to check on the most important things. After that I enter the new
data in our internal CRM database. As we kind of have a paperless office, I co-
write tasks for our local market officers, set e-mail notifications and check for
tenders. Additionally, I write headlines for our Austrian webpage wko.at and
design layouts for backdrops. For lunch – we get 30 minutes - I normally leave
around 13:00 hrs. I prefer to go for lunch with my colleagues who welcomed me and showed me the best
places to try typical Chinese food. I appreciate that they show me kind of “insider-restaurants” which I
would have probably never visited. During the rest of my working day, I am working on projects. These
projects include working for the monthly newsletter, updating business industry reports, writing articles
about current business topics and translate market reports from our Market Officers to Austrian
companies. Additionally I get the possibility to join fairs and business events, I already visited the Asian
Licensing Conference, the Toys & Game Fair, the Hong Kong Fashion Week as well as the Startmeup
Festival, where I met Mr Bibop G. Gresta. Hearing him talk about Hyperloop was definitely a mind changing
moment. Mr Schierer, the Trade Commissioner, very much encourages interns to get a good feeling for the
local market, to experience it and to make the most of our stay. My internship provides a great variety of
different subjects which allows me to gain valuable experiences for my future career. After a tiring day, I
leave the office at 17:30 hrs. I sometimes hang out with interns from other companies for an “after-work-
beer”. What I can say about my internship so far is that I really enjoy discovering the market in Hong Kong. I
am sure that these experiences I will gain during my internship will influence my professional life while
fostering personal growth and development. I am really looking forward to new tasks and challenges for
the remaining four weeks at the ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Hong Kong office.”
