The biggest event was Harry Styles’ debut single entering the chart at #3 – the highest a single has ever debuted in the history of the chart. With the Top 3 in lockdown this week, it’s the movers in the Top 10 that deserve the spotlight – most notably Clean Bandit. It seems the UK classical crossover/dance-pop trio can do no wrong. Late last year saw the release of Rockabye ft. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie, which peaked at #1 on the Hot 100. Now we have Symphony ft. Zara Larsson, another hit that more prominently displays the classical instrumentation seen on 2014 hit (and #1 single of the year) Rather Be ft. Jess Glynne. Now at #6 from #10, Symphony has come a long way and still has plenty of room to grow, though admittedly with large obstacles in the way: aside from the monoliths in the Top 3, it also has to go through a resurgent Julia Michaels at #5 and a new peak from Zedd & Alessia Cara’s Stay at #4. AUSTRALIAN SINGLES REPORT
Last week was a big one. Lorde took her first #1 on the Hot 100 with Green Light, surpassing her original breakout hit Royals which peaked at #2. The biggest event was Harry Styles’ debut single entering the chart at #3 – the highest a single has ever debuted in the history of the chart. With the Top 3 in lockdown this week, it’s the movers in the Top 10 that deserve the spotlight – most notably Clean Bandit.

Halsey made waves this week with Now Or Never. The new track skyrocketed to #36 from #84 on the Hot 100, a total of 48 spaces. Pete Murray tried to give chase with Take Me Down but only got as far as #59 from #85. It marks the first time Halsey has cracked the Top 40 as a lead artist. Prior to this latest chart, she’s spent 26 weeks in the bracket thanks to her feature spot on The Chainsmokers’ #1 single Closer.
A good deal of punk borders the Hot 100, with A Day To Remember’s Bullfight and The Smith Street Band’s Birthdays teetering at #1 and #2 respectively. If we were a betting publication, it would be Smith Street that got our tip, based off triple j’s undying love for the band.
There’s some predictability in the Spins charts this week, with Nova throwing all their weight behind Harry Styles’ Sign Of The Times. Interestingly, there’s some crossover on the triple j and Triple M charts, thanks to Kasabian. You’re In Love With A Psycho has managed to tap into two key radio markets, it would seem.
Global superstar singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey recently unveiled the latest single and title track from her upcoming new album Lust For Life. Featuring vocals from The Weeknd, Lust For Life is the second track to be taken from Lana’s forthcoming album, due for release later this year. The album is a body of work created by Lana and her longtime producer and collaborator Rick Nowels. Full details on the album are to be revealed at a later date.
Her previous single Love is performing exceptionally well, especially on triple j where it’s #4 on their Hit List.

In this month’s TMN Data Dive, we take a look at the key points of Australian singer-songwriter Amy Shark’s ascent to commercial breakthrough with her now undeniable hit Adore. We’ll go through Adore’s lifespan from release to commercial breakthrough, referencing data across all platforms and using spikes in Shazams to help roadmap her journey.
Released independently mid 2016 and uploaded to triple j unearthed, Adore was quick to garner the attention of the youth network, getting added to the triple j days rotation and then scoring the unearthed feature artist for a week. This triggered the first series of Shazam spikes. From then on the Shazam rate steadied, remaining the same through the release of the music video. At that point it was already considered an alternative breakthrough hit, but things started to ramp up on October 28: the date of her triple j like a version performance, which helped usher her on to over one million Spotify plays by mid November.
Mid November is also when Adore had its first official service to commercial radio. The track failed to make much of an impact, though it did see some love, most notably from Ash London and the Hit Regional Network. But by that point Amy had independently earned over a hundred spins on triple j, scored 137,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, become the 4th most Shazamed song in Australia for a week, and started earning various chart peaks across ARIA, iTunes and the TMN Hot 100.
Now we hit 2017 and triple j’s Hottest 100 comes into play. Flume’s Never Be Like You was always pegged to be the winner but Amy Shark was expected to give some healthy competition. After coming out at #2, anyone in the alternative sphere of music who didn’t know her soon did, as the below Shazam chart will testify. The largest spike in her career thus far, it earned over 15,000 Shazams in a day.
The impact of the win was seen across all of commercial radio the following week – almost every station that hadn’t already added it doing so, and those that already did moved it up to their across the board rotation.
So where does that leave us now? Well, as of writing, Adore is now north of 12 million Spotify streams, 2x Platinum on the ARIA Singles chart with a peak of #3, and had peaked at #13 on the Hot 100. On top of all this, she’s now signed to Wonderlick Recording Company in partnership with Sony Music Entertianment Australia.
She’s also released new single Weekends recently and it’s become evident that it’s benefited greatly from all the legwork done by Adore. Upon release triple j immediately got behind the track; this week it sits at #2 on their Spins Chart and #3 on their Hit List. For the full story head to The Music Network.

Dean Lewis dominates the Australian Hot 100 for another week with Waves while Amy Shark’s Weekends jumps to #1 from #10. San Cisco make some gains with Hey, Did I Do You Wrong? at #2 from #7, coinciding with their #1 on the triple j Spins Chart. Their last single SloMo went down a treat on the youth network, also cracking #1 on the Hot 100 Alternative chart and even earning a placing on the Hot 100 at #81.
