The effective removal of corrosion, especially rust, from the hull, propellor, motor and other surfaces of boats and ships is essential to preserving their longevity and effectiveness. Wet abrasive blasting enables affected surfaces to be stripped back to a corrosion-free base that can then be protectively coated. Proper preparation before protective coating takes place is vital because it has a greater effect on the performance and reliability of the coating more than any other factor. If the preparation of a surface for coating is poor, the

ultimate performance of that coating will likewise be poor.

The Quill Falcon Kwikblast System creates surfaces on which coatings can be successfully applied, which contributes significantly to the longevity and quality of these coatings. Abrasive blasting profiles the surface area in such a way that the coating is able effectively to anchor itself to the small peaks and valleys of the blasted surface and thus adheres better.

At Australian Enviroblast, our abrasive blasting services have successfully been employed on steel warships, submarines and destroyers, fibreglass mine sweepers, wooden fishing boats, aluminium research vessels, oil containers, LNG vessels and cargo ships.

Abrasive blasting can be used for:

fabric maintenancerepainting programmes

cleaning debris from ballast tankscleaning debris from surfaces prior to welding

removing coatings prior to NDT preparationcleaning debris from cable trays

removing sea growth from steel structurescleaning debris from decking

Building restoration and renovationHeritage, industrial, commercial, retail and domestic buildings

Abrasive blasting can be used for a variety of purposes in the restoration and renovation of all types of buildings and structures, including domestic and commercial premises as well as all types of industrial and manufacturing spaces.

Using the Quill Falcon Kwikblast Dustless Blasting System, our abrasive blasting services are especially effective

at removing paint from all types of surfaces, including brick, concrete, timber, ceramic tiles, sandstone, bluestone and limestone, and the walls and floors of all kinds of domestic, commercial, retail and industrial buildings.

Stripping away old, existing layers of paint is vital before repainting, as it cleans away all residual paint layers leaving an

extremely smooth, even finish that is the ideal preparation for repainting. Likewise, abrasive blasting strips away oil and mould stains, residue and corrosion from all types of stone and brickwork and restores all types of surfaces to pristine condition.

01 Fire and Flood RepairProperties that have been damaged by fire and flood can benefit from wet abrasive blasting as part of their remediation. Less labour-intensive and without involving any chemicals, damaged interiors and exteriors can be restored to a state where restoration and renovation can take place. Wet abrasive blasting can remove soot, mould, odours and stains, and profiles surfaces so that they are ready for repainting, plastering or rendering.

02 Timber Surfaces and StructuresAlthough it is powerful and fast-working, wet abrasive blasting is also extremely gentle and so can be used on soft surfaces and delicate materials. This includes wood and timber, enabling stains, mould, paint and graffiti to be removed from all kinds of wooden structures and surfaces.

03 Walkways, Tiles and Car ParksOur flexible on-site wet abrasive blasting is an effective means of cleaning mould, grease, oil and other slippery deposits from paths, walkways, car parks and driveways in commercial environments. In addition, concrete aggregate can be exposed by abrasive blasting to create non-slip surfaces and is perfect for use in public spaces such as shopping centres, schools, industrial parks, and commercial premises. Non-slip surfaces can be created by wet abrasive blasting in a variety of materials and surfaces, including concrete, tiles and pavers.

04 Heritage RestorationsHeritage buildings located within high-density areas are particularly prone to suffering from traffic and environmental pollution and degradation. Sandstone and bluestone, historically the stones used in the majority of Adelaide buildings, can become severely discoloured and this leads not only to a deterioration in appearance but also to the overall integrity of the stone as result of decay.

However, wet abrasive blasting using the Quill Falcon Kwikblast Dustless Blasting System means that years of soot, grime and fumes build up can be removed quickly but without causing any damage to the surface. More gentle than sandblasting and other types of high pressure cleaning, abrasive blasting is ideal for use on softer stones like sandstone, bluestone limestone and masonry.

Industrial wet abrasive blasting servicesIndustrial, manufacturing and mining equipment, machinery and structures

Abrasive blasting using the Quill Falcon Kwikblast Dustless Blasting System is the ideal process for prolonging the life and performance of a wide range of industrial and mining equipment, machinery and structures. It reduces the effects of corrosion and other forms of abrasion, caused by operating

in extreme heat conditions, excessive wear and tear, and exposure to chemicals and other corrosive materials. Abrasive blasting enables affected surfaces to be effectively and efficiently stripped back to a

corrosion free base that can then be protectively coated.

We combine our wet abrasive blasting services with industrial coating application, which means that industrial machinery and equipment is protected in harsh conditions and can continue to function

effectively and efficiently, reducing downtime as well as the need for costly repairs and replacement.

Protective coating servicesMarine, industrial, manufacturing and mining equipment

Corrosion-resistant surface treatments are essential to extending the life of metal machinery and equipment in environments where corrosion is a constant threat, be it from extreme temperatures, moisture, chemicals or salt spray. Effectively treating metal surfaces in this way gives them far greater protection against the weather and other dangers.

At Australian Enviroblast (AEB), we specialise in the application of industrial coatings that protect treated surfaces, components and equipment from the effects of corrosion and other forms of degradation, and we are able to use and apply a wide variety of coatings to meet your needs and the demands of the work environment.

Industrial coatings improve both the appearance and longevity of equipment and machinery in harsh environments, and in conjunction with our wet abrasive blasting services, provide comprehensive protection against corrosion, abrasion and the impact of chemicals and weather for all types of structures and materials, particularly steel structures, components and machines.

Wet abrasive blasting with the Quill Falcon Kwikblast Dustless Blasting System means that surfaces are prepared and profiled so that newly-applied protective coatings can be at their most effective, adhering better for longer. Any coating will ultimately fail if the surface is not properly treated and prepared, and so wet abrasive blasting makes sure that coatings stay in place and offer protection for valuable plant and machinery.

Abrasive blasting case studyNoble Pearl, Adelaide

The Noble Pearl, a 25.61m fishing boat, is one of fifteen vessels owned and operated by Raptis. It was up for its two-year survey, which involved wet abrasive blasting and re-coating both above and below the

water line.

The first step was to give the entire boat a pressure wash and to clean it up below the water line. We then undertook spot abrasive blasting in places, which involves feathering over a particular spot to clean

out the rust. This was followed by sweep blasting, where we wave over the entire surface.

Following abrasive blasting, we then applied new coatings to the boat. The first layer was high-build epoxy everywhere both above and below the water line. We then applied a polyurethane top coat above the water line, while below the water line received a tie coat. This was then followed by two coats of anti-

foul paint. In this process, we use two-pack industrial marine coatings. We then completed the job by painting in the draft and plimsoll marks.

Overall, the job took us about 12 days to complete, with 3 - 4 workers on site at any one time. All of the workforce at AEB are blaster-painters who have their EWP and confined spaces tickets.

Wet abrasive blasting is so effective on this type of job, and is preferred over conventional dry sandblasting or grit blasting, because very little dust is produced, and so other trades in the immediate vicinity are not prevented from working. With wet abrasive blasting, all the media falls within a 3 - 5m radius; with conventional dry blasting or media blasting, the media can sometimes fall as far as 20m away.

In addition, wet abrasive blasting uses half the media of conventional dry sandblasting. It also removes salts and chlorides from a ships’s surface and hull more effectively, which means that anti-fouling paints and marine industrial coatings adhere to the surface better and so last longer.

Water in the job was used at the rate of 0.5 litres per minute, so in a day’s blasting we would expect to use between 200 - 250 litres.

The process for cleaning a boat like the Noble Pearl is also different when you utilise wet abrasive blasting as opposed to dry grit blasting.

Dry blasting would involve washing the boat with water, dry blasting, and then washing again. With wet abrasive blasting, the ship is blasted first, followed by a pressure wash, then marine industrial coatings are applied.

This means that the surface is cleaner with salts and chloride having been removed more effectively, saving time and money in the process. This also means that coatings and anti-foul paint adhere better and so do a more effective job for longer.
