AUSTRALIAN BOOK PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION

COMMITTEE REPORT

On a hot day in December 1992, the judges and representative Committee members availed

themselves of the hospitality of Longman Cheshire and met in the company's South Melbourne

boardroom. After a small measure of wailing and gnashing of teeth, a large task was tackled

enthusiastically, and decisions by the judges began to flow at least relatively smoothly.

The judges were Mimmo Cozzolino (freelance designer), Sue Williams (Omnibus Books) and Suzy

Baldwin (Editor, 24 Hours). We thank them for their hard work, dedication and professionalism.

The sponsors continue to make these awards possible, and we extend to them our heartfelt thanks. They

are: Joyce Nicholson; Australian Consolidated Press and 11ze Bulletin; HarperCollins Publishers;

Reader's Digest; McPherson 's Printing Group; Ashton Scholastic; Griffin Press; Penguin Books

Australia Ltd; Weldon International; University of Queensland Press, and the Australian

Government Publishing Service.

Midland Typesetters and McPherson's Printing Group generously donated the services and materials to

create this catalogue. It has been designed by Cathy van Ee, one of the two designers who this year have

won the Joyce Nicholson Award for the best designed book of the year.

II BOOK DES IGN AWARDS 1992

MIMMO COZZILINO Mimrno Cozzolino has been working as graphic designer since 1971 and

is a partner in the Melbourne studio Cozzolino/Ellett Design

D'Vision.

Although book design is not his particular specialty, in 1981 Mirnmo won

the ABPA Best Designed Book of the Year Award with Symbols of

Australia (a book he also conceived and researched).

Mimmo writes, 'Because book designing can be such a repetitive

activity once the initial creative work is done, book designers should

consider taking a break, once in a while, to work in other areas of

design so that they can sustain interest and inject some fresh ideas into the

world of books. I also believe that designers should play a more active role

as 'authors ' or compilers of 'visual' books in their own images to tell

stories. There are lots of picture books (and I don't mean 'coffee table

books') out there waiting to be created by designers rather than

wordsmiths.'

SUE WILLIAMS Sue Williams was born in a lift in Sydney, Australia (and has been

going up in the world ever since). After a brief stint as a student

teacher, she embarked on a career as a conunercial artist, later working as

a theatrical set designer and stage manager. In 1972 she joined the

publishing finn of Rigby Ltd in South Australia, where she was

production manager and art director for the education division. In

1980 she left Rigby to co-found the specialist children's publishing

house, Onmibus Books, which is now part of the Ashton Scholastic

Group.

Sue lives in Adelaide and is the author of the picture book I Wem

Walking, illustrated by Julie Vivas.

SUZY BALDWIN Suzy Baldwin is editor of 24 Hours, the monthly magazine for the arts,

music, contemporary issues and ideas published by the ABC. She was

previously the editor of Harpers Bazaar Australia and a book editor. She has

wrinen for Tiie Bulletin, Vogue and Harpers Bazaar asnd was general editor

of the bicentennial book, Unsung Heroes and Heroines (Greenhouse).

JUDGES ' REPORT

The judges were pleased to note that the awards attracted over 280 entries this year, an increase of over

ten per cent since 1991. This was, at least in pan, due to the Committee's decision to open up the

competition to all book designers, not just those of ABPA members.

As usual the most popular categories included the Bulletin Award for the best jacket/cover design of the

year, and the Ashton Scholastic Award for the best designed illustrated children's book.

The judges felt that overall the standard of the entries this year was workmanlike, rather than

adventurous. This was panicularly true of the design of many of the educational and reference

books, which while competent and generally effective, were too often lacking in inspiration and

vitality.

The glossy, often big budget photographic books were noted to be on the whole rather dull, with a

restrained and somewhat predictable approach to their design. It was something of a surprise to the judges

that a conm1ended entry for the HarperCollins A ward for the best designed popular reference book was

a calendar rather than a book; however, after a good deal of consideration, this was felt to be quite clearly

one of the most stimulating entries in this category.

Two categories that did impress the judges were the non-illustrated and paperback sections of the awards.

In both these areas, the judges noted excellent use of typography, with a satisfying mixture of

classical and modem fonts being used. These categories both displayed a pleasing degree of

innovativeness, and in many cases proved that excellent design is possible on quite limited budgets.

The most outstanding category this year was the Bulletin Award for the best jacket/cover design.

Unfonunately many of the entries, not just in this category but in others too, had attractive, eye-catching

covers, but were disappointingly let down by their internal design.

The category for the best designed book promotional material was better patronised this year. The

material here was extremely varied, covering posters, brochures, photographs, display bins, and

more. The judges agreed that this category had a great deal of potential and it is hoped that even more

entries will be submitted in the future.

Although the judges expressed disappointment at the overall standard of entries, it should be noted that

the winning and commended books in all categories stood out above the competition, and are

examples of creative and sometimes excellent design that deserve to be noticed and honoured by these

annual A wards.

BOOK DESIGN AWARDS 1992 II

AWARD OF HONOUR

The Award of Honour this year has been given to the printing, design and publishing partners, Dick

Edwards and Rod Shaw for their significant contribution towards raising the standard of Australian book

design and production. All of their titles submitted for design awards from 1953 to 1968, when they

ceased submitting, were chosen to be among the best books of the year in which they were

published.

The high quality of the books published by these two pioneers, first under their 'Bam on the Hill' imprint

(1939-42), and later under the better-known Edwards & Shaw imprint (1942-1989), was recognised in

1972 when eight of their titles were included in a 'Book Design in Australia' exhibition, selected by the

National Library of Australia for display in State libraries.

In 1986 two tides designed and published by Dick Edwards and Rod Shaw were part of a travelling

exhibition, also organised by the National Library and entitled, 'Celebrating the books of Australia

178&--1986'; the books displayed were First Fn1its of Australian Poetry by Barron Field, a Barn on the Hill

publication, (their private hand press) and 1l1e Feathered Serpent by Roland Robinson, an Edwards & Shaw

publication.

Dick Edwards and Rod Shaw were friends for fifty-seven years and partners for fifty-three of those years.

When Rod Shaw died in December 1992 at the age of seventy-seven, Dick Edwards said, 'Rod taught

me all about art and l possibly helped him in literary matters; he had a superb graphic judgment and l

have a grounding in bibliography; in short he could draw and l could spell.'

Dick Edwards and Rod Shaw made a major contribution to the way in which books have been designed

and produced in Australia. They gave young writers, especially poets, an opportunity to have their first

manuscripts published. They pioneered ways to reproduce Aboriginal paintings in a manner which made

them look authentic, and they also helped to combat book censorship by printing, in 1965, the then

banned book, Die Trial of Lady Clwtterly.

Dick Edwards and Rod Shaw are worthy recipients of an honour award for book design. They will be

long remembered for their courageous publishing, and for the elegant, uncluttered design of their

publications.

Judges' comments By far the most suc

cessful design as a total concept, particularly

considering the complexities that the design

team had to work with. The binding style

suits the way the book is to be used. The

judges enjoyed the book and were attracted

to. it.

Designers' comments The cover had to

have an element of sophistication that would

appeal to a wide ranging audience. The

illustration area has therefore been kept as a

smaller element, letting the type and graphic

element do most of the communication.

tension and energy that sets this cover apart.

Judges' comments In a very over

crowded category this book stands out with

information that is well presented,

typography which is clean but srylish and an

appropriate choice of pictorial material.

Designer's comments This book was

designed to be a cross between a coffee

table sryle book and a practical 'how to'

guide. Different tints in the tables were used to

add more colour, and to show the variery of

subjects covered.

Judges' comments A creative solution

to what might have been a visually boring

book. Interesting departure from

traditional format. Excellent use of colour.

Design bold, but not overpowering.

Designer's comments Brief was to design in

an innovative, eye-catching manner which

would ultimately encourage students to

want to learn. The look was therefore

required to be modern and dynamic.

Judges' Comments An exceUent cover,

and a design which does not let its reader

down. Inside, interesting use of simple

typography combined with strong

illustrations and photographs, and a sure

hand, keeping the many and varied elements

controUed.

Designer's comments The publisher was

looking for a unique presentation for what ~ a

unique coUection of children's thoughts. We

decided to try to achieve a special look

through the square format and an

arrangement of the text that would take the

reader on a visual journey through the

Designer's comments A small manuscript

Judges' comments A clever use of margin

space to enable pages to operate on two

visual levels. The design is appropriate to the

child reader without becoming predictable.

Designer's comments The publisher's

brief was that there had to be an integration

between language and maths so border

artwork and speech balloons were intro

duced to work well in shared reading

situations.
