About the ARA

In 1950 a group of leading business people established awards for excellence in preparing annual reports to improve the standards of financial reporting and communicating with stakeholders in Australia. These Awards, now known as the Australasian Reporting Awards, have been presented each year for 70 years. The Awards are administered by Australasian Reporting Awards Limited, an independent not-for-profit organisation run by volunteer professionals from the business, government and not-for profit sectors who are concerned with the quality of financial and business reporting.

The Awards provide all organisations that produce an annual report an opportunity to benchmark their report against the ARA criteria which are based on world best practice. In the General Award, Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are presented to recognise the achievement of a high standard.

Competitive Special Awards are presented in specific areas of reporting such as Work Health & Safety and Governance, and for Integrated Reporting, Online Reporting and Communication. A new Award for Best Cover Design introduced in 2018 was offered again in 2020 and will be available in 2021.

In the 2019 Awards the Sustainability Reporting Award was changed to a graduated award with Gold, Silver, Bronze and Nil Awards to benchmark the extent to which reports satisfied the ARA criteria, and Sustainability Report of the Year Awards were made in the private sector and the public plus NFP sectors. From 2020 the private, public and NFP sectors have been merged and there will be only one Sustainability Report of the Year Award.

The ARA contributes to ongoing improvement in the quality of reporting by:

• Preparing and widely distributing criteria based on world best practice as guidelines for preparing an annual report;

• Conducting an annual seminar on reporting;

• Recognising excellence in reporting with Gold Silver and Bronze Awards; and

• Providing constructive feedback to organisations that enter the Awards.

Page 4: Australasian 2020 · 2020. 6. 25. · About the ARA In 1950 a group of leading business people established awards for excellence in preparing annual reports to improve the standards

This is the 70th year of the ARA Awards and the first year ARA has not been able to hold an Awards Presentation Dinner to acknowledge and congratulate Award recipients on their success. Instead, we did some pioneering

work to provide an online 2020 Awards Results Announcement ‘event’ to recognise the winners.

Given the disruptions and uncertainties we have all experienced this year, this virtual results announcement was a special occasion to both congratulate the Award recipients, and celebrate the value, longevity and resilience of the Australasian Reporting Awards.

We look forward to celebrating 70 years of annual ARA Awards and excellence in reporting in person at the 2021 ARA Awards Presentation Dinner to be held at the Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park on 30 August 2021.

The ongoing success of the ARA Awards process rests on entrants’ appreciation of the value of the benchmarking feedback the ARA provides. The increasing number of entries from countries other than Australia and New Zealand indicates this appreciation is spreading. This year, to ensure ARA can continue to maintain its high standards we carried out a thorough review of the ARA criteria and published a practical guide to preparing an annual report.

I wish to thank my co-directors for their significant contributions to the Awards process - Ray Lane, Stephen Varady, Linda Stoneman, Sylvia Bell and Andrew Crawford – and to welcome two new directors, Dr Maria Balatbat and Belinda Dimovski. I also thank all the ARA Coordinators and Adjudicators who make enormous voluntary contributions of their time and expertise to judging the reports. We are very fortunate that many of them have been involved in conducting the rigorous ARA process for many years.

I gratefully acknowledge the support ARA receives from its sponsors and supporters.

But the Awards are really all about the entrants. Many organisations enter every year to check on the standard of their reporting – and some only occasionally. No matter how the ARA Awards work for you, we appreciate your interest in high quality reporting.

We congratulate everyone who entered the 2020 ARA Awards, particularly those who had the courage to submit their reports for the first time.

We look forward to congratulating you in person next year.

Suresh CuganesanChair, Australasian Reporting Awards

“ This year, to ensure ARA can continue to maintain its high standards, we carried out a thorough review of the ARA criteria and published a practical ‘how-to’ guide to preparing an annual report.”

2 2020 ARA AWARDS

Page 5: Australasian 2020 · 2020. 6. 25. · About the ARA In 1950 a group of leading business people established awards for excellence in preparing annual reports to improve the standards

The 2020 ARA Awards attracted a larger than usual number of entrants and there were increased entries

from countries outside Australia and New Zealand, particularly from Hong Kong. The entrants in the 2020 ARA Awards were a very diverse group of organisations in terms of their geographical origin, and industry sector.

Overall the quality of reporting was very high. This led to a record number of 69 organisations being selected to receive a Gold Award. Five of these organisations were selected for a further intensive review to select the 2020 ARA Report of the Year.

The Finalists for the 2020 Report of the Year are Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad; Logan City Council; Marlborough Lines Limited; Sanford Limited and Wesfarmers Limited. They are from Malaysia Australia, and New Zealand and represent the infrastructure, logistics and transport; local government; primary industry; property and construction; and retail sectors. They fully reflect the diversity of the 2020 entrants.

Despite their obvious differences the Finalists all achieved an outstanding high standard in annual reporting. Each organisation was committed to providing a report that responded to its stakeholders’ needs and their disclosures were open, honest, and genuine.

In a world where trust in large corporations and government agencies is diminishing, I believe integrity, transparency and balance in reporting are key to rebuilding trust.

REPORT from the Chair of theARA Awards Committee

The 2020 ARA Report of the Year Award was won by Logan City Council which has entered the Awards for many years and steadily improved from one year to the next. Such improvement is only achieved with a genuine desire to do better and by having a long-term commitment.

During the reporting year, Logan City Council emerged from a particularly challenging and difficult situation. The open and honest way in which they reported on how they faced the challenges helped them to achieve the distinction of Report of the Year.

It is important to note here that the Australasian Reporting Awards do not benchmark or judge the performance or behaviour of an organisation, but rather how the performance and behaviour of the organisation have been reported.

I congratulate all entrants in the 2020 ARA Awards for seizing the opportunity to learn about the quality of their reporting by submitting their reports for assessment.

I encourage you to have a feedback session with an ARA Adjudicator to complete the process.

I look forward to seeing your reports next year.

Stephen Varady CSMChair, ARA Award Committee

The Chair’s Commendation was introduced in 2017 to acknowledge organisations that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to excellence in reporting. To be eligible for this Award an organisation must achieve ten consecutive Gold Awards. ARA believes the regular independent benchmarking obtained by entering successive ARA Awards makes organisations better able to adapt to changing internal circumstances and regulatory requirements and maintain a continuing high standard in reporting to their stakeholders and meeting stakeholder expectations.Three organisations achieved their tenth consecutive Gold Award in the 2020 ARA Awards: City of Ryde Council, Judicial Commission of NSW and Marlborough Lines Limited.

This is the 22nd year that the Award for the Best First Time Entry has been presented since it was introduced in 1999. ARA is pleased that 49 organisations entered the Awards for the first time this year. All of these entrants are to be commended for submitting their reports for critical benchmarking assessment. In addition to the Australian first-time entrants (28) there were first time entrants from Hong Kong (8), Indonesia (1), Malaysia (3) and New Zealand (9). The increasing number of new entries from our neighbour countries in the Asia-Pacific region reflects growing interest in the rigorous ARA assessment process and the opportunity to obtain constructive feedback. In 2014 CLP Holdings was the First Time Entrant to receive a Gold Award. Each year since then the winner of the Best First Time Entry Award achieved a Gold Award.

The judges said . . .

This is an engaging report full of useful information. It communicates effectively on how the company performed and where it fits-in in its operating environment. The performance review, and the governance and risk disclosure sections, are excellent. The easy to read text is well-supported by good graphs and tables.
