GOVS SEASON NOTES

SIUE RECAP■ THE LEADCLARKSVILLE – Four members of the Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team recorded double-digit point totals, Wednesday, leading to an 85-62 victory over SIUE in the Dunn Center.

■ HOW IT HAPPENED ■ The Governors were led by senior center Tearra

Banks, who totaled a game-high 19 points, but it was the additional offense around her which ultimately proved to be the difference. Senior forward Beth Rates was perfect from the field at 6-for-6, leading to 14 points, junior center Brianne Alexander added 14 points and sophomore Keisha Gregory had a milestone performance – posting the first double-double of her career (13 points, 10 rebounds).

■ The 85 points scored by APSU are the most in regulation since Jan. 20, 2016 at Morehead State. On Wednesday, the Govs were strong on both ends of the court – shooting 51.7 percent as a team while holding the Cougars to 29.8 percent. Ten different APSU players scored on the night, helping lead to the wire-to-wire victory.

■ GAME NOTES ■ With her 19 points, Banks is now just 14 points

away from passing Ashley Herring for 13th all-time in Austin Peay scoring, currently with 1,169 career points. The performance is also her 12th-straight game to post double figures.

■ Rates was one free throw away from being perfect in all areas, Wednesday. She also recorded four blocks in the contest to move within five from overtaking Ashley Haynes for third-most in program history.

■ For Alexander, it’s the fifth time in 2016-17 to reach 10 or more points in a single-game. Seven of the junior’s points came at the free throw line.

■ Gregory matched her career-high points total with 13 courtesy of three three-pointers, and also grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds in the win.

SEARCHING FOR MORE: After falling to East-ern Kentucky in the opening round of the OVC Tournament, David Midlick returns for his second head coaching season in Clarksville, looking to build on an eight-win conference season.BANKS PASSES DANIELS: With her 22 points at Tennessee Tech, senior center Tearra Banks moved to 14th in all-time APSU scor-ing. Banks passed Carrie Daniels on the list, and is now 14 points away from passing Ash-ley Herring for 13th place, currently at 1,169 career points.BANKS CLAIMS FIRST OVC POW AWARD: With the help of her memorable weekend capped off against WKU, Banks earned the first adidas® OVC Player of the Week award of her career. She finished the week averaging 20 points and six rebounds per game, while also shooting 55.2 percent. She followed that performance up with a 22-point, 14-rebound display at Evansville, Dec. 10.B-WILL NAMED NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Junior guard Bri Williams was named OVC Newcomer of the Week after averaging 10 points, 8.5 rebounds, three assists and 3.5 steals per game last week. Against TTU, Jan. 5, Williams posted her first double-double as a Gov (12 points, 10 rebounds), while also adding a season-high five steals and dished out five assists.RATES CLIMBING THE CHARTS: With four blocks against SIUE, senior forward Beth Rates is now four away from passing Ashley Haynes for third-most in APSU history, cur-rently with 115.BAKER FOR THREE: Falon Baker returned from injury last season and lit it up front deep, hitting 48 threes with a 37.5 percentage. This season, she has knocked down 24 shots be-hind the arch, including five at Tennessee Tech.WELCOME, NEWBIES: Midlick has brought in four newcomers to join the Governors – one junior college transfer (Bri Williams) and three freshmen (Nieja Crawford, Arielle Gonzalez-Varner and Shelbe Piggie). REPLACING GRAY: Austin Peay’s major ques-tion entering the 2016-17 season is how the Govs replace the production of Tiasha Gray. A two-time All-OVC first team pick, Gray ac-counted for nearly 30 percent of APSU’s of-fense last season, averaging 20.6 points per game, and was the only player to log over 800 minutes (1,003).

FOUR STARTERS RETURN: The Govs return four starters from last year’s OVC Tournament team, led by seniors Tearra Banks and Beth Rates. The frontcourt duo, along with April Riv-ers and Jacey Scott, complete the 2017 senior class. Sharpshooters Falon Baker, Madison Rich and Keisha Gregory return to provide of-fense from the perimeter, while Brianne Alex-ander and Sydney Gooch are back to control the paint.DEFEND THE DUNN: In 2015-16, Austin Peay compiled a 9-3 record on its home court, with all but one win on the season occuring in the Dunn Center. Seven of those victories came in Ohio Valley Conference play, including three consecutive home wins to conclude the sea-son. This year, the Govs have an increased home schedule with 15.GOVS PICKED 9TH/7TH IN POLLS: Austin Peay was picked to finish ninth in the OVC pre-season poll, as voted on by conference coach-es and sports information representatives. The Govs received 82 votes in the rankings. In the third annual OVC media poll, the Gov-ernors were selected seventh, up two spots from the coaches and SID rankings. Fourteen voters participated, giving APSU 73 points in the process.GRAY SIGNS TO PLAY IN SWEDEN: Former standout guard Tiasha Gray signed to play professionally for Swedish club Mark Basket in the Basketligan, the country’s top-flight league. Gray is averaging 20.8 points, 7.3 as-sists and 5.5 rebounds per game.OXENRIDER ELEVATED, COLE JOINS STAFF: In the offseason, Kayla Oxenrider was promot-ed to associate head coach by David Midlick. Oxenrider enters her second season at APSU, and will continue to serve as the team’s re-cruiting coordinator while also adding respon-sibilities. In addition, Drew Cole, a recent graduate of Aurora University, joins the Govs as a graduate assistant.BATTLE OF THE BORDER: In September, Aus-tin Peay, Murray State and Heritage Bank cre-ated the Battle of the Border series between the Govs and Racers. The rivarly will now fea-ture a year-long multi-sport competition, with both schools earning points for wins and com-munity service projects.

PRESEASON OVC POLL & ALL-OVC TEAMS OVC NOTES

OVC CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO NASHVILLEThe OVC Women’s Basketball Championship returns to Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium for the sixth consecutive season. The Govs have won two (1996 and 2004) of their eight OVC Tournament Championships at Municipal Auditorium and have a 9-6 record, all-time, in OVC tournaments played there.

OVCDN ENTERS FIFTH SEASON The OVC Digital Network (OVCDN) enters its fifth season as the exclusive home for live web streamed athletic contests involving OVC schools. Starting with the relaunch under the OVCDN website in 2012-13, OVC member schools offer select home events free of charge in a HD-quality format thanks to an investment in new equipment conference-wide. Fans also will find it easier to log onto OVCDigitalNetwork.com and access live video streams without any registration. The events are available on any computer, tablet or smart phone without the need of any special downloads or apps thanks to up-to-date streaming technology. This season, two new features will make viewing better for fans as the OVCDN has incorporated a “DVR” func-tion that will allow any viewer to rewind and/or fast forward to any point of the contest while it is live. In addition, all contests will feature “instant archiving” that will allow fans to watch a replay of the contest immediately after the event concludes.
