Speaker: Mr. Jim Thomas of Thomas Studio

Jim Thomas is a nationally published artist with numer-ous professional art association memberships, including Texas Society of Sculptors, Guild of Austin Architectural Artisans, Diocese of Austin. Among the many awards won, Thomas is a three-time "Gold Medalist" of the Texas Cowboy Artist Association. College training in earth sciences, chemistry, and metallurgy, combined with more than 43 years professional team experience with architects, engineers, government and private pub-lic art administrators are a foundation for his years of professional sculpting, art foundry, and metal fabrica-tions experience.

Thomas Studio & Foundry specializes in designing, sculpting, casting, and fabricating fine public and private art including architectural art, liturgical art, fabrications, and casting bronze sculpture for other artists. Since 1968, Jim Thomas has worked as art bronze

fondeur and sculptor. Thomas has a small foundry and fabrication shop with skilled artisans. Larger casting and sculpture projects include the 5-story "Tree of Life" sculpted brick park in Cleveland, Ohio; the full scale cast bronze Chisholm Trail Commemorative park in Round Rock, Texas; and the three-figure 12' cast bronze Viet-nam Memorial by Tony Pham for a park in Bellaire - Houston, Texas. and six full scale cast bronze longhorn sculptures in Houston, Ft. Worth, El Paso, San Antonio, Abilene and Round Rock. Recent large cast bronze sculptures include the Doc Peters Memorial at the Round Rock City Hall Plaza, the Coach Jim Mallon Memorial at the Southwest University baseball stadium in Georgetown, Texas (sculpted and cast by son James Shelby Thomas assisted by Bryan Vincent. Additional new large bronzes and architectural art include a scale and fourth Axis buck and doe for the entrance to the Mullen Ranch guest house at Mountain Home, Texas; the Jim Mallon Memorial at the South-western University baseball stadium in Georgetown, Texas; a half-scale Mountain Lion for the entry foyer at the new Cy-Fair Elementary School in Houston, Texas; and a custom steel and IPE (Brazilian Walnut) entry and door for a Westlake, Texas residence. ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR FY2016 I encourage all members to attend the meeting on the 20th to vote for the officers who will lead the Chapter beginning July 1 and ending on June 30, 2017.

CHAPTER MEETING PRESENTATION I personally believe the presentation this month will be very interesting. During my career, I’ve only worked on two projects for which a work of fine art was commissioned. The first project was the Stephen Wise Temple, Wise School, a elementary school in Los Angeles, and the work was to be a gate at the entrance to a special room used for a religious ceremony (if I remember correctly). I do not remember it being a very large room, so I doubt it was a Beth Midrash (i.e., study hall). Unfortunately, I never saw the artist’s design sketches, because they were not completed when my employment as the architectural firm’s specifier ended. The second project was to have etched glass panels that were backlit installed in the two elevator lobbies of 55 Second Street (later renamed the KPMG Building) in San Francisco. It is my understanding that a building tenant objected to the depiction of nude humans cavorting, so the panels were replaced. It appears in the 3rd photo in the web site (http://www.hines.com/properties/kpmg-building-san-francisco) that at least one of the panels is of a flock of birds flying upward . (Can you believe it in this day and age that someone in San

Francisco — of all places — objecting to a work of art that has naked people. If I remember correctly, the tenant was a legal firm and had leased a large amount of square footage, so the building’s Owner and management complied with the “request”, at great expense I imagine. The main lobby was to have large paintings on opposite walls, one of which can also be seen (partially) in the photo previously mentioned. I remember the Architect bemoaning the simplistic paintings were not appropriate for the space. So, what does an Agreement between an Owner and an Artist need to include? NEW BUSINESS:

• Motion was made to accept the proposal from Brazos Hall which includes having Brazos Hall purchase and serve the alcohol. Marina seconded. Motion approved.

Total Budget for the event is $22,500. For alcohol, the Chapter will carry a budget of $8,400. The Chapter will cover $5,000 and could be liable for the balance of $3,400 if attendees do not purchase additional drinks beyond the two drinks at $7 dollars per drink.

• Bands: Board discussed Weldon Henson and Graham Wilkinson. Larry mentioned he would send the Board A youtube video to review.

• Sponsorships: It was agreed to have three levels of sponsors: - Platinum Sponsor 4 at $1,000 each - Gold Sponsor unlimited number at $250 each - Bronze Sponsor unlimited number at $100 each

In lieu of using the names of precious metals to designate the different levels of sponsorship, it was suggested to use names such as Lonestar and Yellow Rose of Texas as a way of tying the event to Texas

• Larry will contact David Brady regarding the Chapter’s participation in the High Performance Buildings and Workplaces Conference and Exposition to be held on May 3 and May 4. Marina will be at the conference representing Cosella Dorken.

• Scholarship Fund: It was suggested to have the CSI College of Fellows which Sheldon Wolfe is the Chancellor of present a check to the UT School of Architecture at the CSI Convention. Larry will contact Sheldon.

• Jody has been in contact the Poke Joes for the food for the event. Rough budget of $5,000 pluss a 10 to 20 percent service fee.
