AUSCHWITZ TRIP EISTEDDFOD NURSERY NEWS
After Friday and Saturday’s weather causing potential
havoc to the course, the sun came out to greet the
Rougemont Runners as we arrived at the start line for the
2020 City of Newport Half Marathon. We began running at
10am for the hard slog of making it through 13.1 miles and
whilst the sun made way for rain and hail. As time went by
and the sun made way for rain and hail, our smiles turned
to grimaces as we fought to reach the finish line.
The Rougemont sea of pink was brilliant to see and I
received numerous comments from other participants about
how wonderful our team of students past and present, staff
and parents were. I count myself lucky to work in a school
like Rougemont, but on days like Sunday it fills me with
pride to be associated with such amazing young people,
colleagues and supportive parents. I would like to say a
huge thank you to everyone involved, from the runners
themselves, the supporters on the streets who made such a
difference to us and anyone who has sponsored us at
https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RougemontRunners.
Our next event will be the Newport 10km and Marathon
on 19th April with a team of runners from Year 10 and
above taking part. If you are feeling inspired by the
weekend’s events and want to help us raise money for St
David’s Hospice Care, please sign up for the 10km at
https://newportwalesmarathon.co.uk/register-10k/.
Please then forward your confirmation email to me and I
will add you to our team list. If you could do this by
Friday 13th March, I can begin arranging our team
shirts.
If 10km is too daunting a distance for you, keep your
eyes peeled over the coming weeks for details about a
5km Kolor Dash team, where we will be inviting runners
from Years 3 and upwards to join us as well as a 2km
event for runners from Reception and above.
Thanks for everybody’s efforts so far and
#LetsRaisePlentyIn2020.

Year 13 pupils Lucy and Sana had to privilege to join the ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ trip in February
AUSCHWITZ TRIP
Sana and I had the privilege of visiting Auschwitz I and Auschwitz - Birkenau with Lessons from Auschwitz.
PAGE 6
The trip began with a visit to Oświęcim where The
Great Synagogue used to be; now there is a memorial
in its place. We benefited greatly from going here
before visiting the camps as it put into perspective just
how close the camps were to the main town and how
the Jewish community had been fully integrated into it.
Shortly after, we went to Auschwitz I. I feel as though
Block 5 has had the biggest impact upon me. This is
the block that holds a display devoted to the ‘material
evidence of the crimes. Here is where we saw just a
fraction of the belongings of those who had been held
in the camp. Another section of Auschwitz I which I will
hold with me for the rest of life is block 27 where there
is a book of 4.4 million names. These are an attempt
to try and memorialise all those who had their lives
taken due to the Holocaust. Whilst looking in this book
we were told that they will never be able to have all 6.6
million names in the book as whole communities were
wiped out by the Holocaust.
The most emotional part of the day, for me, was when
we walked through the gas chambers where many
innocent people lost their lives. Words cannot describe
the feeling of being in such a place. We then went to
Auschwitz - Birkenau where we had the chance to go
up the watch tower and look over the vast landscape.
Wherever you looked the camp sprawled as far as the
eye could see.
Whilst at Birkenau there was a strong feeling among
the group of how privileged we all are as wrapped up in
our large winter coats and walking boots we all
mentioned how cold we are, however when we
remembered those who were living in the camp only
had thin working clothes and poorly made shoes our
complaints paled into insignificance.
At the end of the day we held a memorial at the end of
Auschwitz - Birkenau which was led by a Rebbetzin.
She said something that really stuck with me when she
was a young girl, she asked her great grandparents
and her grandparents when was she going to get her
tattoo. They replied by saying they hoped she would
never be getting one like theirs. This really stuck with
me due to it highlighting the impact the Holocaust has
had upon communities even to this day.
Overall, I would say the experience has impacted
greatly upon how I view the Holocaust and how it has
affected those who survived and remember those who
were murdered.

SUBJECT OF THE WEEK
Year 9 are studying the continent of Africa at the moment. At the beginning of the
topic they were asked to write down the first 3 words that came to mind when they
heard the word ‘Africa’. The words were then used to make a ‘word cloud’ for each
class; the larger words being the ones that were said more frequently. We will
revisit the words at the end of the topic to see if our views of Africa have changed
since studying the continent to challenge any stereotyped views we may have
had.

Year 12 Geographers have recently visited Bristol to look at gentrification and how it has changed
some of the areas. They have used the information collected that day to form part of their human
fieldwork study.
They have also been looking at how globalisation has changed places and how multinational
companies have been trying to access different markets all over the world.
One example looked at is a vegetarian McDonalds in Katra near the base for Hindus visiting the
mountain shrine of Vaishno Devi, the second busiest pilgrimage spot in India.
Year 8 are studying rivers at the moment. They are looking at how different
river landforms are formed and they are using Lego to make animations
explaining each of the stages.
We have been celebrating all
things Welsh at Key Stage 3 in
the build up to the Eisteddfod.
Here is a small selection of
some of the amazing
Geography off-stage
competition entries of Welsh
‘landscapes in a box’ and
