MEETING THE TEAM

Deborah NuaEnrolled Nurse Aurrum Reservoir, Victoria

Bronwyn WestHousekeeping Officer Aurrum Erina, New South Wales

What is your role and what are you responsible for?I assist in providing care to our Residents. I am responsible for administering medications and providing wound management and continence care. I also respond to relative enquiries, help Residents with day-to-day tasks and assist the Registered Nurses in care planning and care evaluations.

Why did you decide to work in aged care?My background is in mig welding. I never thought of pursuing a career in the health industry, let alone Aged Care. It was only when I started looking after my own parents and their brothers and sisters that I became passionate about providing care to the ones I love. It was then that I completed my Certificate III in Aged Care and my career blossomed from there.

You have been working in aged care for over 10 years – is there a person or experience that has stayed with you?Over the past 10 years, I have had the opportunity to work with some exceptional Registered Nurses and Clinicians. Aurrum’s Operational Manager, Mary Moisa has also been a wonderful mentor to me.

What are you most proud of? Completing my Enrolled Nurse studies was a big achievement. I am now enrolled in a Registered Nurse course, which I’m looking forward to completing. I am also proud to be a part of a growing organisation like Aurrum.

What do you enjoy most about working for Aurrum?I love seeing Residents’ faces light up when they greet me in the morning. It’s also really special when they visit my nurse station at the end of the day and say ‘goodbye, see you tomorrow’. Knowing that Residents and their families really appreciate the work that I do and the support that I provide is very satisfying.

How do you relax?I enjoy reading a good romance, soaking in a salt bath and listening to some relaxing tunes on the radio. I also like meeting up with friends and having a good yarn over coffee and sweets.

What is your role and what are you responsible for? I manage laundry services at Aurrum Erina. I am responsible for washing, drying, folding, labelling and delivering linen and personal clothing to up to 182 Residents.

Why did you decide to work in aged care? I previously worked in retail for many years, but always wanted a more rewarding career. Working in Aged Care is very fulfilling and I enjoy making a difference to other people’s lives.

You have been working in aged care for over 10 years – is there a person or experience that has stayed with you? Absolutely! We have a Resident named June, who is in her eighth year with us that attends the laundry every Monday without fail to assist in folding clothes and towels. It is an absolute pleasure having her around and I look forward to our Mondays together immensely.

What are you most proud of? I take great pride in what I do and I’m proud that I’m renowned for my loyalty, honesty and excellent work ethic.

What do you enjoy most about working for Aurrum? Aurrum offers a positive and supportive work environment, and I really like the people I work with.

How do you relax? I take a very early morning walk around Terrigal Haven, which invigorates me and also helps me to relax. When on holidays, I’m always on a wonderful cruise, often with my Mum or I’m shopping for that special bargain!

In this edition, we ask 101-year-old Nella Hickey at Aurrum Erina (NSW) to share her life experiences.

What do you think has changed the most over your lifetime?

I have seen so many changes in my lifetime. The telephone has changed a lot – telephones used to be on the wall and we used to turn the dial to call someone. I can still remember the first time I used a telephone to listen to someone talking far away. Now everyone has mobile phones.

What are some of your earliest memories?

My first car was a Hillman Hunter and then I upgraded to a Datsun 1600.

My first job was working on the switchboard for the local telephone exchange when I was 18. At the time, my family was living in Hay, in country NSW, and Dad worked for the Postmaster-General’s Department as an Inspector. I then became a Nurse, which I really enjoyed.

I was from a big family and we were all very musical. I played the violin and we used to play at the local balls in town. My brothers played the piano and I can remember practicing every night while Mum and Dad listened. I was the third youngest in the family.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Caring for people when I was a nurse and getting married and having children. I have two children, seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

And now the question on everyone’s mind, what do you attribute your longevity to?

I played a lot of tennis and golf in my younger years and had plenty of friends. I kept busy through my volunteer work with the Country Women’s Association and local charities like the Red Cross, and I believe that’s kept me young.

I still do crossword puzzles and continue to read as it keeps my mind active. Age is only a number, I feel about fifty. Life is about being active and happy. Always eat well, be social, and exercise. That’ll give you a long and happy life.

You moved into Erina in 2010. How would you describe the family of carers at Aurrum?

I went on holiday to New Zealand and had a fall while there. After that, I initially moved in with my daughter, but when her husband became ill, they were unable to care for me so I moved to the Central Coast with my son. Their house has stairs, which I was unable to climb, so that was when we made the decision to move into Aged Care.

The carers at Aurrum are lovely and helpful. They look after me very well and nothing is ever too much trouble. I get around on my motorised scooter and enjoy doing my crosswords in the sun outside. I love looking out my window each day, watching the birds and the rain in the winter and the mist amongst the trees.

3,000 low care Residents in 60 aged care facilities in Victoria are participating in the two year study, which aims to improve protein and calcium through increased dairy intake to help Residents maintain muscle and bone strength.

Whilst Residents are currently offered four serves of dairy per day, including optional morning and afternoon tea, Monash University are asking all aged care facilities participating in the study to add additional protein and calcium to meals to ensure Residents meet the recommended intake.

Aurrum’s Clinical Food and Service Dietitian Melissa Ruffa is working closely with Monash University and Brunswick chefs to design menu plans and ensure Residents consume the required amount.

Melissa said, “Fortunately Residents don’t have to consume greater amounts of food to increase their calcium and protein intake. We can simply add extra cheese to lasagna, milk powder to custard or desserts or milk to porridge.”

Residents’ bone structure, bone density and body composition will be tested throughout the study, and they will also undergo regular strength and physical function assessments.

Aurrum’s involvement in this study will help researchers to develop more evidenced based practices for the nutritional care of the elderly.

AURRUM BRUNSWICK PARTICIPATES IN DAIRY RESEARCH STUDYAurrum Brunswick (VIC) is participating in a research project by Monash University and Austin Health, which is investigating whether four serves of dairy a day can help Residents reduce falls and fractures.

AURRUM NUTRITION

AURRUM’S DELICIOUS AND WHOLESOME MEALS DELIVER HEALTH BENEFITS TO BRUNSWICK RESIDENTSFresh food, a top-class dining experience and highly nutritious menus have led to improved nutritional outcomes for Residents at Aurrum Brunswick (VIC).

Aurrum’s Clinical Food and Service Dietitian Melissa Ruffa, is working closely with our chefs and Residents to design meals that are varied, healthy and enjoyable.

“At Aurrum, we are committed to ensuring that our Residents are both well nourished and excited about eating.” She said, “Involving Residents in the menu planning process allows us to find out what they enjoy eating, as well as cater to their tastes and preferences.

To ensure meals are well-balanced, all our menu items are nutritionally analysed and compared against the Australian Guidelines for Healthy Eating.”

Melissa said since the opening of Aurrum Brunswick and the implementation of the homes’ well-executed dining menu, steady weight gains have been documented in residents. “A healthy weight is linked to improved health and better quality of life. If a Resident has been unwell prior to admission, or has been managing with difficulty at home, this can have a negative impact on their weight and nutritional intake.

Over the past six months, 82% of our underweight Residents (underweight being defined as a body mass index less than 22kg/m2) have achieved significant weight gains (between 5-12% of their body weight). In the other 18% of Residents, weights have remained stable, with no weight losses recorded.”

Melissa said these results clearly indicate that Brunswick’s dining menus are helping to improve the nutritional status of our Residents.

“These results are very pleasing as it shows that we can improve the health of our residents by providing them with highly nutritious meals, that are varied and enjoyable.”

FROM AURRUM’S FOOD AMBASSADOR KAREN MARTINI

Ingredients (Serves 1)

• 150g Salmon fillets or blue eye trevalla, skin on

• 2 large Prawn cutlets, slit down the middle (butterflied),

tail still intact

• 1/₄ lemon, sliced

• 3 tbsp (45ml) extra virgin olive oil

• Salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper

• 1 garlic clove, thinly sliced

• 1/₄ red onion, thinly sliced

• 1/₂ carrot, peeled, thinly sliced or julienned

• 1 celery stick, thinly sliced or julienned

• Sprig of Thyme, leaves chopped over

• 1 tbsp verjuice

• 1 tbsp white wine

• Baking paper and foil

Enjoying a variety of delicious, nutritionally balanced meals is an important part of maintaining good health and helping Residents feel at home.

Fish has numerous health benefits for people of all ages, but especially older adults. Like other oily fish, salmon contains those all-important omega-3 fats (EPA and DHA) known to be beneficial for cardiac, joint and brain health.

In the elderly, specific studies have shown that those that regularly ate oily fish were at reduced risk of death from heat disease and stroke, were less likely to develop dementia and had lower rates of the eye condition, age-related macular degeneration. While the evidence for the use of omega-3 supplements is not clear cut, intakes of oily fish as part of a healthy diet is consistently linked with health benefits.

The Australian Guidelines for Healthy Eating (NHMRC 2013) and The Heart Foundation encourage adults to consume at least two serves of fish per week, including oily fish, and all Aurrum menus are developed with these guidelines in mind.

In this edition, we are delighted to share with you a delicious recipe from Karen Martini’s summer collection – salmon and prawn parcels in olive oil and thyme.

Lifestyle and Wellness Assistant Debora Kirkillis said, “A highlight of the afternoon was a surprise visit from Santa (Resident Howard Trompf) and one of his elves (Lifestyle and Wellness Manager Jane Wright). It was wonderful seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces!”

A family Christmas at Aurrum Norah Head Christmas is a time for family, friends and, of course, food. In December, Residents and their families at Aurrum Norah Head (NSW) enjoyed all of these at their annual Christmas lunch, along with Christmas carols and a visit from Santa.

The chefs prepared a beautiful spread for Residents and their loved ones, which included roast turkey, ham and pork, as well as traditional Christmas pudding and pavlova for dessert.

Norah Head’s very talented Music Therapist Racia, kept everyone entertained, and Assistant Nurse Chris Dunstan, brought smiles to everyone’s faces by dressing up as Santa.

Christmas is a very exciting and special time for our Residents. Here are some of the ways our homes celebrated.

CHRISTMAS AT AURRUM

Page 16: Aurrum times issue 03 digital

16 E D I T I O N 3

In August last year, I arrived at Aurrum Erina (NSW) and could not possibly imagine what was in store for me.

It was a fortnight before Christmas when the Lifestyle team approached me and asked if I would like to play Santa. (The team was hoping to take photos of the Residents with Santa for their Christmas presents). It was a nice idea and I thought it could be a fun opportunity to meet other Residents, so I said yes.

After dressing-up in my Santa suit, the staff decorated my walker in tinsel and lights and placed my companion, PARO* beside me.

Wishing someone a Merry Christmas or having a brief chat might not seem like much, but it can make the world of difference to an older person who has no family and friends around.

I had a wonderful time wandering around the home talking to Residents. I found it so rewarding to see their faces light up when they saw me. The warmth and appreciation they showed me was incredibly uplifting.

I’ll never forget this experience. My role as Santa allowed me to rediscover the true meaning of Christmas. Spreading a little cheer around the home brought me so much joy and the experience really brightened my day (and hopefully other Residents felt a little special too!)

ERINA’S CAROLS BY CANDELIGHT A HUGE SUCCESS With the support of the local community and Aurrum staff, Aurrum Erina (NSW) Residents were treated to an afternoon (and evening) of Christmas cheer in December.

Two Carol by Candlelight events were held for Residents and their loved ones so that everyone could attend.

Soulful singing, lively entertainment, raffles and a free sausage sizzle ensured both events were a big success.

A highlight was a collection of Christmas carols sung by Erina’s very own Memory Support Resident choir, affectionately known as ‘the Magic Elves’. The choir get together weekly to sing a variety of music including ‘You are my sunshine’, ‘Daisy’ and ‘Sera Sera’ among others.

Throughout the evening, Residents sang and swayed colourful battery light candles to the music.

Residents who were unable to attend the celebrations were delighted to receive a personal visit from Santa and his young Elves in their rooms.

Lifestyle Officer Linda Segrott said the day was a great success with nearly 80 people attending.

“It was lovely to see our Residents and their families enjoying the entertainment and food on offer. Thank you to all staff for making it such a special day.”

RESERVOIR’S CHRISTMAS PARTY A HUGE SUCCESS Aurrum Reservoir’s (VIC) Christmas party was very well attended with families coming to enjoy an afternoon of carol singing and entertainment with our Residents.

The much-loved event featured live entertainment from local talent Carol Taweel, plenty of traditional and contemporary carols, raffles and Christmas stalls as well as a surprise appearance from Santa (Maintenance Officer Rick Martin) and his Elf (Lifestyle and Wellness Manager Jane Wright).

Jane said carols are particularly popular with Residents, saying, “they just love it, and you can see their faces light up when they sing.”

Well done to all staff who organised such a fabulous event.

Australia Day at Norah HeadResidents at Aurrum Norah Head (NSW) enjoyed a lively program of activities to celebrate our national day at the end of January.

Residents were treated to a delicious Aussie inspired three-course lunch prepared by our chefs, consisting of lamb loin chops with salad and damper, followed by Pavlova for dessert.

Staff went out of their way to decorate the dining room for the occasion, and Residents showed their patriotic spirit by donning fake tattoos and Akubra hats.

The day concluded with Happy Hour drinks and a special viewing of the classic Australian film ‘The Castle.’

Well done to all staff for organising such a special day for our Residents.

Australia Day at Brunswick Residents at Aurrum Brunswick (VIC) celebrated Australia Day in style with a bus outing, delicious food and some dancing.

On the 22nd January, Residents were treated to a ‘Great Aussie bus trip’ around Melbourne. The bus stopped at a number of city attractions and landmarks, including the Shrine of Remembrance Memorial, before Residents enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch at the Royal Botanic gardens.

On Australia Day, Residents celebrated with a BBQ style lunch, followed by a lively dinner dance in the evening.

Lifestyle and Wellness Assistant Debora Kirkillis said delicious food and lively music and entertainment ensured everyone had a very memorable day. “It was a wonderful way to celebrate Australia day, and it was great to see Residents having such a lovely time, enjoying each others company.”

Australia Day at ErinaLively music, fun and lamb chops were the essence of Australia Day celebrations at Aurrum Erina (NSW).

Residents enjoyed a delicious BBQ lunch prepared by our chefs whilst talented local singer, Jerry Wall, sang some classic Australian tunes.

Lifestyle and Wellness Coordinator Linda Segrott said staff and Residents loved getting into the spirit. “Everyone donned Aussie hats and wigs, and had a great time waving their Australian flags in the air shouting ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi, oi, oi!”

Not surprisingly Linda said she was inundated with positive feedback about the day. “We’re really pleased that we were able to organise such a wonderful day for our Residents. It was great to see everyone come together to celebrate what it is to be Australian.”

Australia Day at ReservoirResidents at Reservoir (VIC) celebrated Australia Day with some wonderful entertainment.

Talented local singer, Alex Kyle sang some classic Australian tunes and Residents had a great time, clapping and singing along to the music.

LEISURE & LIFESTYLE

Meaningful activitiesEngaging the memories of Residents Aurrum Residents have been engaging in a popular reading activity based on the Montessori method. The activity, which is offered at all residences as part of Aurrum’s lifestyle program, is designed to stimulate the mind, boost self-esteem and ‘awaken the memory’ of Residents.

Aurrum’s Lifestyle and Wellness Manager Jane Wright said the activity helps Residents to reconnect with pleasant events of the past. “Carers read to participants, and in return, Residents are encouraged to share their experiences on the subject with other Residents and staff in the group.”

The reading books are specially designed for the activity and cover a range of fun topics including Australia Post, The Melbourne Cup and The Dairy Farm.

Jane said engaging Residents in meaningful activities such as reading has many benefits. “We’ve been delighted by the positive impact the Montessori method has had on Residents who attend our reading groups. Residents are more engaged and social and symptoms of agitation have reduced.

She said the activity has also allowed staff to learn more about Residents and their life stories. “By having this understanding, staff are able to organise activity programs that are best suited to Residents’ strengths, abilities and interests.”

Tender love and care sees gardens growBrunswick (VIC) Residents have been enjoying tendering to the home’s beautiful gardens.

Lifestyle and Wellness Assistant Debora Kirkilis, who has been overseeing the gardening group, said the gardens are looking wonderful. “We have mint, tomatoes, lettuce and spring onions growing, not to mention countless amounts of well watered and maintained flowers and shrubs.

It’s a delight to see Residents spending time in the garden and to see their hard work come to fruition.”

LEISURE & LIFESTYLE

Brunswick Dance Therapy Bringing creativity to care Brunswick has recently introduced Dance Therapy to its extensive lifestyle program.

The 45-minute dance sessions, which are held weekly, have proven to be very popular with Residents.

Lifestyle and Wellness Manager Jane Wright said the therapeutic benefits of dancing are endless. “Dance and music bring people together in a fun environment. It is an activity that can be enjoyed at any age, and for senior citizens, dancing can be a fun form of exercise that strengthens muscles, helps prevent falls and increases social interaction.”

One Resident summed it up when she said, “I love the music, the companionship, the interaction I have with other Residents and staff and just the general feeling of delight. I go away smiling every week!”

The power of music

Aurrum Brunswick’s (VIC) music therapy program continues to

be highly successful.

The program, which is run by Brunswick’s talented Music

Therapist Alex Dean, provides Residents with an interactive

music experience.

During the one hour weekly sessions, Residents are

encouraged to listen to a wide variety of music from different

cultures around the world, including Greek Zorba and Italian

Folk music.

Facility Manager Monica Elston said Residents love the

opportunity to interact and express themselves through music.

“The power of music is really quite extraordinary. There are

some Residents who can struggle to put their words together,

but if you sing a song they know, they can sing along and

know all the words. I see them come alive – it’s incredible. ”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Erina participates in Gosford Christmas ParadeFor the first time, Residents and staff from Aurrum Erina (NSW) participated in the annual Gosford City Christmas Parade.

Thousands of spectators lined the streets to watch a huge array of floats; characters, bands and performers take part in this year’s display.

Lifestyle Officer Linda Segrott, who organised for Erina to participate in the event, said Residents and staff loved being part of the spectacle. “We decorated the Aurrum bus, and had fun dressing up in silly Christmas costumes. The residents had a wonderful time cheering from the bus as we made our way down the street. It was great!”

Such was the success of the parade that Residents and staff are already making plans for next year’s event.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Aurrum makes its mark at the Maroondah Festival in MelbourneAurrum’s stand at the Maroondah Festival in November was a huge success, thanks to the tremendous efforts of our staff.

Aurrum was one of the major sponsors of the event, which is now in its 26th year.

An estimate of 20,000 people passed through the event site throughout the day, making the Festival one of the biggest community events in Melbourne and a key event on the Melbourne cultural calendar.

Client Services Manager Belinda Urbani said it was a wonderful opportunity to showcase to the community what Aurrum has to offer. “Our stand heavily marketed Aurrum, and in particular, our Healesville residence in Victoria.

Our very talented Harp Therapist Carla performed throughout the day, adding a beautiful musical touch, and the bright and beautiful artwork by our Healesville Residents was a huge hit. PARO, our therapeutic robotic seal, was also on display and was a highlight amongst children and adults.”

Belinda was very grateful for the local community’s support. “Thank you to all the local businesses in the Yarra Valley Region who kindly donated a large range of wines, champagne and chocolates for Aurrum’s free raffle. Your generous gifts were much appreciated.”

Book Club at BrunswickAurrum Brunswick (VIC) has established a book lending service in conjunction with the local Moreland Library.

Lifestyle and Wellness Assistant Debora Kirkilis said, “If Residents would like something in particular to read or listen to, the Lifestyle team can arrange it and organise it to be delivered directly to the home.

Language specific reading and music material, including books, magazines and CD’s, can also be arranged for the home’s Greek and Italian Residents. And for Residents unable to read, the team can, in conjunction with their families, arrange audio books and electronic book readers, which we can play to Residents daily.”

Debora said the response from Residents has been very positive. “Residents love receiving something new to read or listen to each month. It is also great for keeping Residents’ mentally alert and engaged.”
