An aurora is a natural light display in the

sky particularly in the high latitude

regions, caused by the collision of

energetic charged particles in the high

altitude atmosphere.

Auroras are associated with the solar

wind, a flow of ions continuously flowing

outward from the Sun. The Earth's

magnetic field traps these particles, many

of which travel toward the poles where

they are accelerated toward

Earth. Collisions between these ions and

atmospheric atoms and molecules cause

energy releases in the form of auroras

appearing in large circles around the

poles.

1619, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei

created the name “Aurora Borealis”

according to the name of the Roman

Goddess of Dawn (Aurora).

Aurora normally has following colors:

• Red: at the highest altitudes

• Green: at lower altitudes

• Yellow or Pink: a mix of red and green

• Blue: at the lowest altitudes

When are the chances?

So far, science cannot accurately predict the

exact timing of aurora displays on Earth,

however, aurora forecasts can be provided by

monitoring space weather and sunspot

activity.

These forecasts indicate the potential for

auroras and its best viewing is in the hours

just before and after midnight.

If the weather is clear, chances are good

that aurora displays between late August and

mid-April in Canada, and best from December

to March when nights are longest and the sky

is darkest.


What are the best locations?


Canada is an ideal place for aurora-

watching, as its land expands into the

Arctic Circle. From west coast to east

coast, there are many great spots for

watching the aurora borealis .

11 provincial parks are at the north of Saskatoon, many open year-round. Melfort is in the province’s northeast, with a nickname of “The city of the northern lights”.

everything for a taste of the North. The aurora borealis dances across the sky more than 300 nights a year.[ Moose Factory, Ontario ]

For a unique northern lights viewing experience, visit the Moose Factory. See the Cree culture during the day, and spend the night to enjoy aurora on the Moose River.[ Iqaluit, Nunavut ]

It’s common to see the northern lights dancing above Iqaluit. Nunavut has little aurora tour system. You must find your own way to enjoy the natural phenomenon.[ Kuujjuaq, Québec ]

Most of Nunavik, the northern region of Quebec, is situated beneath the auroral oval. When you fish trout or hunt caribou, don’t forget to look up at aurora overhead.[ Happy Valley - Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador ]
