Steamboat American Queen visits Augusta Thursday, July 11 th Looking Back Tabitha’s Tidbits Compiled by The Bracken County Historical Society From THE AUGUSTA TIMES BICENTENNIAL EDITION June 30, 1976 Many old landmarks are still present on Augusta scene (Continuation) White Hall At the present time, this stately old house is being restored by Dr. and Mrs. Milton Brindley. The house on the inside was completely disastrous, with equipment and tires and everything else stored everywhere. Windows were broken out and children ran in and out as they pleased destroying anything that got in their way, such as the slave chains in the cellar. False walls had been put in and the rain had poured down the walls of a chimney. Now one year later and many thousands of dollars later, along with a new baby, this is home. Little by little the house is taking shape. Under all the debris, there was a water system that was quite a setup for that period of time. In order to see this, one must be on the second floor and look out a window toward the west and see the large cistern. The worst thing that could happen to this house, was the taking out of the slave quarters, chains etc. in the cellar. The Marshall family was great slaveholders. Many of the old “younger” set have told me about when they were little, how they used to go down in this cellar and tie each other up with the chains, and swing on the rings that held them. This house was believed to have been built around 1809 by Arthur Thome. It has solid brick walls. The woodwork is white pine. The floors are ash. The stair railing and spokes are cherry. The Brindleys replaced 125 panes. There are 17 rooms and 3 stories. An old Negro mistress told me that her mother, grandmother and sister had worked in this house. She told me of the grand suppers, dances and beautiful gardens that once was here. On the third floor of this house, one will find it almost Shaker-like. Once white walls, simplicity of woodworking and panels of pegs. Mr. Thome was a Calvinist-Presbyterian, almost Shaker. This area could have been used as a school for the young in the family, servants quarters or an area for the babies. To Be Continued Deaths MR.
