challenge is similar and

different at the same time.

The level of automation,

internet reliance,

communication

enhancements and staff

skill levels is quite

different in this

millennium from when I

began my library career.

Back in the sixties the

fastest way to send a

As Interim Director of the

Walker Memorial Library,

I am greatly impressed by

the work just completed

in renovating the

historical space on the

ground level of the

original building. The

culmination of four years

of work and many hours

of planning by Board and

Staff has resulted in a

tasteful and practical area

to accommodate a

number of functions. The

long awaited moving day

was July 25 and the

Library closed for the

afternoon. Public Works

employees, Library Staff,

and Board Members came

together for several hours

to accomplish the move.

New work areas were

created for Cataloging,

materials was also

enabled. In short, the

library will look neater and

areas that have been

closed will be reopened

for use.

The opportunity to guide

the Walker Memorial

Library through the

period between

permanent Directors is a

welcome one to me.

Libraries for 35 years

including 27 years as

Director of South Port-

Work on the

Downstairs section of

the Historic Walker

Memorial Library

building was

completed in mid-July.

This space creates an

employee & volunteer

workspace; along with

a kitchen, bathroom

and break room. All

items being added to

our collection will now

be cataloged and

processed in this space.

There is also storage

space for the Friends

of the Library.

Library Staff and

Volunteers are

currently moving into

the new space, which

simultaneously frees up

other parts of the

Library for patron use

and services.

All of us here are very

excited about our new

workspaces and the

possibilities the future

holds for the rest of the

Library.
