Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,

Welcome back to school! I hope you have had a relaxing, enjoyable summer and are looking forward to an excellent 2010-2011 school year.

The PTSA is proud to debut the improvement of the restrooms on our campus. The quality of our restrooms has been a consistent complaint over the years, so we are happy to report that with some persistence and cooperation this project is finally being completed. The City of Malibu and the PTSA worked together with the school district to make this happen. The following is being done to improve the restrooms : the tile has been cleaned up, new partitions have been installed, as well as new fixtures for towels and toilet paper, and look for fresh coats of paint on walls. When you are at GYSD we invite you to take a look at the PTSA funds at work. We hope you will remind your children to respect the new and improved restrooms by keeping them clean and not vandalizing them.

This past year we worked hard to improve the communication between the school and its families, and we hope to improve that even more this year. In addition to our new website at www.malibuhigh.org and the very popular parent sponsored e-MHS network, we are hoping to send out a weekly email to all families. This will give you all of the information you need about the upcoming events at MHS. To do this you must give us your email address on the form enclosed in this mailer. We hope you will provide your email address so you

can receive these excellent weekly updates. MHS is working hard to communicate with everyone on a weekly basis, while at the same time being conscious of the environment, so we are going paperless. For those of you who don’t do email, the weekly emails will be posted on the MHS website at www.malibuhigh.org and a monthly newsletter can be mailed to you if you request to receive it by mail.

I highly encourage you to get involved at MHS, in an area that interests you. Whether it is a PTSA committee, The Shark Fund, Arts Angels or Athletic Boosters, your family’s school experience will be enhanced by your participation. And on that note, please remember that all of the groups listed above – all of the programs and budgets at MHS – are funded by The Shark Fund. Your contribution is an essential investment in the success of Malibu High School. Please support your child by supporting The Shark Fund. Look for the donation information enclosed in this packet.

Don’t forget to join the PTSA, and have all of your family members do so as well. It is just $6 per person. In order to save paper and time, the membership sign-up is on the MHS Directory, eNews, and PTSA Form this year. Please hand in the completed form at the PTSA table at GYSD.

I look forward to seeing you at Get Your Stuff Day and wish you a wonderful 2010-2011 school year!

From the President of the MHS PTSA

MALIBU HIGH SCHOOL PTA IS GOING GREEN!

The PTA Weekly Bulletin and PTA Monthly Mailer are both going to be emailed to every family to save paper, postage and waste. However, for this program to be a success every family needs to provide a working email address. It’s important for everyone at MHS to be informed - parents and students. Please take the time to carefully fill out your Directory/eNews and PTSA form so that you can receive these important updates and communications. If you must have a printed version of the Monthly Newsletter mailed to you, please indicate that on the “Directory/eNews and PTSA Form” clearly. We hope in the next year everyone will opt for the email version and Malibu High can realize its dream of being a greener campus.

Ask the expert:My kid lost a library book or textbook, what should I do?Your child’s 2010 schedule and last semester grades will not be released until the book has been found or the bill for its full retail price has been paid. (OUCH!) It is a good idea to turn your house upside down to find the wayward book. Here are some places to look: Under the bed, in the bookshelf, under the back seat of the car, at the best friend’s house, at the back of the closet, in the gym bag or in the neighbor’s bushes. Good luck!

School starts in six days, my child has not read the summer reading assignment. What should I do?Go to www.malibuhigh.org and search “Summer Reading Lists” Presto, the lists will magically appear. Drive to your nearest bookstore and purchase the books or visit one of the amazing public libraries in our area. You won’t have enough time for ordering online. Trust me. Tell your child he/she will not be able to have any more fun this summer until all the material has been read. Pump him or her with caffeinated beverages, sweets or tasteless high calorie protein bars as he/she attempts to finish the books. For high schoolers, in class essays will be assigned on the second day of school. So get to work. Middle schoolers will probably have a fun art project. (Just guessing:)

I have been going back to school shopping with my teen. My child tells me there is no dress code at Malibu High, is that true? All school policies are outlined in the fascinating Student Parent Handbook. You may download the document at the school website and read all about the dress code and other important rules and regulations in our school. Search “Handbook” or go to http://www.malibuhigh.org/academics_student_parent_handbook A copy of the rules is also located inside the cover of the weekly planner that every student is required to buy at Get Your Stuff Day.

MHS Directory Frequently Asked ????The MHS Directory includes student and parent names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. The directory is compiled, printed and mailed by PTSA volunteers. Don’t be left out! Fill out the MHS Directory, eNews, and PTSA Form enclosed in this packet of information and bring it to Get Your Stuff Day or to the Main Office at school by Thursday, September 30th.

When do I get my copy? The MHS Directory will be mailed in mid - October.

Does the directory use the blue emergency cards info?NO. The blue card info is private and confidential. The MHS Directory is prepared by the PTSA. Therefore, TO BE INCLUDED IN THE DIRECTORY YOU MUST FILL OUT AND SIGN THE MHS Directory, eNews, and PTSA Form (enclosed in this packet of information, in the main office, and on our website) Please don’t forget to sign the form. The PTSA must obtain parent approval for inclusion in the school directory.

What happens if I opt out?Your student’s name will not be in the directory. A teacher, coach, student in a group project or concerned parent may not be able to reach you with important information. If you desire you

may only print your name and phone number and leave other fields empty.

I didn’t get a copy in the mail. The PTSA only sends out one copy to the student’s official address.

Where may I get extra copies? In the Main Office for $5.00.

Help! My contact info has changed! If after publication your information changes, please complete an MHS Directory Update - available on the school website or in the Main Office. Mail it or bring it to school and put it in the PTA President’s Box. Directory updates will be included through February in the monthly newsletter for you to clip out and insert in your copy of the official directory.

I wasn’t included!Did you submit a completed MHS Directory form by September 30th? If not, complete an MHS Directory Update Form. Updates are part of every month’s newsletter.

My contact info is wrong! “To err is human, forgive divine.” Alexander Pope. Complete a MHS Directory Update. The correction will be printed in the newsletter.
