hat’s up, manatees?
Looks like this summer is rolling to a very satisfying
end! I’ve had so much fun with KIWIN’S lately, whether it was
Summer Board, which I attended at the beginning of the month,
or recent service projects with you guys such as Movies in the
Park! There are still definitely many memories to make, espe-
cially at the Movie Night!
Speaking of Summer Board, I had such a memorable
weekend with your District Board powerhouse. Rest assured, a
lot of exciting things are taking place for KIWIN’S this year, and
hopefully you’ll all stick around to see it. Otherwise, it’ll be a
shame that you’re missing out on what will be a legendary year!
I can already imagine how awesome your Club Rushes will be.
Kick some booty, and show that manatee spirit!
I know you must all be scrambling to do some last-
minute summer homework, so I’ll end it here. I just wanted to let
you guys know that your work this summer was incredible and
you grew so much from when we first started in April! I’m proud
of how much you got done despite being on vacation. Thank
you for a wonderful summer! Now let’s make this school year
one to remember, Jet! Remember, we’ll always have each other! With love,
Halena Ngo

Spotlight on... Your District Convention Chair Bryan Ninh!
Official JET Division Newsletter August Issue Page 2
My name is Brian Ninh, but I prefer Bryan. Like some of you KIWINNER’S, I’m also seventeen years old. I recently transferred to Saint Bonaven-ture High School as a junior from Adolfo Camarillo High School, where I first found my Ohana and I am excited to say that there will be even more new faces at Fall Rally and District Convention this upcoming year! When I’m not at school study-ing, practicing for something, or serving KIWIN’S, you can usually find me eating my heart out, sleeping, or watching chick flicks like The Pro-posal or The Last Song. I think I’m a pretty ener-getic person especially at home with my Ohana, KIWIN’S. I may be shy at first, but I get down and wild when I get to know you! Throughout my three years in KIWIN’S, I can honestly say that I have met some of the best people in high school. Al-though I do wish I could say I have had more ex-perience with District Board, I have only had the opportunity to be a Special Projects Committee member but as of today, I am honored to be your District Convention Chair! I can promise that I will not disappoint. As District Convention Chair, I will strive to make District Convention a more intuitive and informational environment, but also a more fun and welcoming place to meet new people! Summer Board Recap Ever wonder what exactly goes down at District Board
meetings? Here’s a quick recap of what we got done for the weekend!
Official JET Division Newsletter August Issue Page 5
Friday, August 2nd, 2:35 PM
Jennifer, Jack, Mr. Dimsdale, and I met at a Starbucks to grab a quick drink then pile our luggage into the car and off we went! The ride took about two hours :( but it was worth it when we were reunited. Lots of hugs and photos ensued!
Friday, August 2nd, 5:50 PM
We were able to enjoy dinner with CNH Key Club (and take a hundred more pho-tos) before we headed back to the hotel to get some business done. After brainstorm-ing about DCON and turning in our as-signments, we got comfortable and watched Toy Story 3! Then off to bed~
Saturday, August 3rd, 7:30 AM
My alarm went off, and it was back to work for us! After breakfast, we began our meeting at 9. From then, it was committee updates and lots of business discussion before we were released… nine hours later. Rest assured, KIWIN’S, your DB consists of some hard workers!
Sunday, August 4th, 9:45 AM
Our weekend was rolling to an end.. After some good bonding on Saturday evening which included governor gifts to the birthday kids (thanks, Erika!), we had a two-hour meeting on Sunday morning. Then it was one final lunch at Chipotle then back to home! :(

Wassup in Jet Division! Another summer day was spent well! La Quinta KIWIN’S had
the opportunity to volunteer at this year’s Concerts in the Park
event at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center. This was the
first Concerts in the Park this
year, which was an extra
bonus! Members checked in
at the Kiwanis booth in front
of the recreation center and
were assigned jobs there.
There were a variety of jobs
such as traffic control, selling
raffle tickets, interacting with the little kids, and clean-up of the
venue! After the event concluded around 9:00 PM, members
joined forces and cleaned up the venue by breaking down ta-
bles, chairs, and picking up unwanted litter.
-Jessica Tran, La Quinta KIWIN’S Vice President
Los Amigos KIWIN'S paired
up with THINK Together and
worked to help promote
reading to children every day
in order for them to build lan-
guage and learning skills for
life. Volunteers used disinfecting wipes to clean the cov-
ers of the books and afterwards placed a "THINK To-
gether" sticker at the back of every book. Even though
Los Amigos KIWIN’S only had a group of give people,
we managed to work together by using our Tetris skills
to fit as many books as we could into the cardboard
boxes. In our last box, we succeeded in filling it with 142
books, beating the record of "140" of the other groups
who volunteered with us today.
-Katherine Pham, Los Amigos KIWIN’S President
On the evening of July 26th, Segerstrom KIWIN'S volun-teered at the Children's Music Playground at Pacific Sym-phony held outside of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Fifteen volunteers arrived at 4:30 near evening to be as-signed to a variety of booths. Such booths included an intro-
duction to marching bands and a child's first time playing an instrument. At each booth, volunteers were headed by a lead volunteer, who led activities at his or her respective booth. Vol-unteers participated in the children's activities, too, much to their grateful embarassment. Several of us learned how to march along with children, as well as play instruments. Once the Children's Music Playground ended at 7 in the evening, we were invited to attend the free concert performed by the Pacific Symphony. It was an amazing event to participate in, and Segerstrom KIWIN'S look forward to volunteering at this event as the year comes along.
-Tony Do, Segerstrom KIWIN’S Vice President
Early 4th of July, Edison’s KIWIN’S volunteered in the
Lake Park 4th of July Annual
Breakfast Event. Our (8) mem-
bers took part in transferring
food from the outside “kitchen
area” to the volunteer-served
buffet area for the folks who
came and paid for their break-
fast. Singly, each member
worked a total amount of 5 hours, contributing a total of
40 hours to Edison’s KIWIN’S. Eventually when the
event slowed down, volunteers were rewarded with a
breakfast of their own. When the event drew close to an
end, every volunteer worked together to clean up. The
event proved to be a success, with volunteers bustling
from place to place systematically to provide the fami-
lies and scouts whom attended this event, a wonderful
breakfast time together.

Wassup in Jet Division! On the Fourth of July, Ma-rina KIWIN'S, along with Marina Key Club and other schools, volunteered for the annual Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast. Pan-cakes, sausages, eggs, bacon, and more were
served to the hungry men and women of all ages that arrived looking for a hardy breakfast. Members even had an opportunity to serve courageous war veterans that gathered for the annual parade. Kiwanis members started cooking the delicious pan-cakes and other foods and soon enough, an assembly line of food was prepared to make it faster and more efficient for peo-ple to grab their breakfast. In addition to serving food, KIWIN'S members also helped to set up and take down supplies needed to make the event happen. A few were also able to help at the benches for the parade by making sure everybody was being space conservative. Overall, Marina KIWIN'S had a very spirited and fun time volunteering for our fellow Kiwanis club.
-Christine Chau, Marina KIWIN’S Historian
On Saturday, July 27th, 2013, Segerstrom KIWIN’S de-
cided to hold a car wash at our
own school to help raise money
and awareness for Project ELIMI-
NATE. Members generously do-
nated their time and provided
supplies in order to carry out the
task. The turnout was even better
than expected as members were
almost overwhelmed at the sur-
prisingly large amount of cars
that came through our school.
Although our club had decided to hold a free car wash
for the community, donations that would go to help Pro-
ject ELIMINATE were gladly accepted. Despite the fact
that the car wash was free, nearly every car that passed
through made the decision to donate.
-Tony Do, Segerstrom KIWIN’S Vice President
On the bright and sunny af-ternoon of Saturday, July 27th FV KIWIN'S held their first Book Doctor of the year. Despite the distance, many members still went to this event. Members entered the doors of the building and signed up at the front desk. An employee then gave each member a sheet to fill out with their contact info. Right when they were done, she gave them instructions on what to do. Each member went to a table filled with books, cleaning wipes, and labels. For every book, members had to clean them with wipes and making sure there were no marks. If there were marks, members had to cover them up with white labels or erase them. At the same time, members had to make sure the books were appropriate for the children. Anything above high school level or religious books were taken out.
-Angela Nguyen, Fountain Valley KIWIN’S Publicist
The weather was
pleasantly cool
and suitable for
picking up un-
wanted trash on
the beach! Mem-
bers travelled to
the border of New-
port and Huntington Beach to volunteer with the Sur-
frider Organization. La Quinta KIWIN’S members
grabbed Surfrider totes and gloves and headed down to
the sand. Members witnessed a variety of unnecessary
trash from cigarette butts, pieces of foam cups, and
even an occasional broken glass bottle. Afterwards,
members walked back to the blue Surfrider tent and
emptied out the bags of trash from the day! The first
week of July ended with a bang, thanks to the members
who attended the beach clean-up.

CLUB PROJECT OF THE MONTH: La Quinta
On a cool July 13, volunteered at the annual ROC Race 5K at the Orange
County Great Parks in Irvine! This event was highly anticipated throughout
the club because this was first time that La Quinta KIWIN’S has ever volun-
teered for this event. Once we all arrived at the volunteer check-in tent,
members signed in and received their bright green ROC volunteer shirts!
From there, we were all split to different stations at the race. Some members
worked alongside the obstacles (i.e. the super slide, wrecking ball), poured
water at the multiple water stations, assisted with race registration, handed
bags at the bag check, and passed out race shirts. After a long five hour
shift, members returned back to the volunteer check-in and ended their day
at the ROC Race!
MANATEE OF THE MONTH: Brandon Doan
This OUTSTANDING and well-known member is also known as that one guy from
Fountain Valley who is super tall, dark, and a bit flirty. Even though he is a bit flirty,
our board saw through that mist and looked at who he really was. Our next Manatee
of the Month. As a member since his Freshman year, Brandon Doan has been a
dedicated member of Fountain Valley KIWIN’S. Not only did he attend almost all of
the events on July, but he also consistently goes to events YEAR ROUND, like Dis-
trict Conventions, Rose Float Decorating, Fall Rally Souths, and all of our enduring
car washes. Brandon is also a really big help to our board! Because of his height, he
can EASILY reach the top of those big trucks at car washes or the high areas during
Rose Float Decorating. Brandon also gives us ideas that pretty much helps our
board run more efficiently and produce things that our members would LOVE. Bran-
don, like any other KIWINNER, also has spirit. Even though Brandon hasn’t been
nominated for Manatee of the Month before, he surely does deserve it this month for
this year round dedication, loud and proud spirit, and his outstanding work as a
KIWIN’s member.
