What an honor it was to receive the following email from Scott H. Carey, Events and Community Relations Manager, Nevada 150. “I am pleased to notify you that the SNRW 9/11 Commemorative Dinner planned for September 12, 2014 has been approved as an ‘Official Event’ as part of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. You may now refer to this event as an ‘Official Nevada 150 event…….” As such, our dinner will be posted on their official events calendar. Look elsewhere in this newsletter for additional information about the 9/11 Dinner. At the July meeting we had a most informative presentation by two of our Douglas County Commissioners, Greg Lynn and Nancy McDermid. Commissioners Lynn and McDermid told of the progress of the new Community Center with the emphasis of being on time and under budget, the search for a new County Manager, and discussed other issues the County is addressing. They graciously answered the difficult questions posed to them by our members, from roads to water to fees. We thank them for their time and informative information. It’s hard to believe that this year is more than half over and that November will be here before we know it. The phone calls are already starting. It’s exciting to know that we can make a difference in the outcome of the elections, and to make Nevada RED. It is time to educate our friends, relatives, neighbors to the issues and get them out to vote, too. If each of us got just one more vote from those who usually don’t vote or are undecided/neutral, maybe we really could make a difference. Unbelievably, it is also time to start thinking about officers for SNRW for 2015. Please, if you are approached by a member of the Nominating Committee asking you to serve, give it very serious consideration. It doesn’t take a lot of time and it is very rewarding. I hope you are all having a wonderful summer, and are managing to keep cool during this hot spell. See you at CVI for our August meeting. "James Madison: A Life Reconsidered" (458 pages plus notes, bibliography and index) by Lynne Cheney recounts the life and political contributions of the man who became our fourth president.

Young Madison's powerful intellect - he finished his last two years of study at Princeton in one year - and early po-litical maturity were perfect preparation for the fiery polemicist who authored and published many of the "Federalist" papers. Madison and his fellow "Federalist" writers, who produced these sometimes lengthy tracts in very short time frames, were the rapid response team that supported or refuted arguments and counter-arguments surrounding the shifting political dynamics of the times.

Shortly after the revolutionary war, Madison and Thomas Jefferson advocated strongly for a powerful central govern-ment. In those days, the individual states were printing their own money, erecting tariffs on each other's goods, and presiding over their own foreign policies. The federal government was starved for funds and had little authority to raise the revenue to meet even its minimalist responsibilities. Many revolutionary war soldiers had still not been paid for their service long after the fighting had ended.

After the supremacy of the federal government was established, Madison became concerned that the federal govern-ment was appropriating power that the newly minted Constitution did not permit, particularly when Alexander Hamil-ton chartered the first central bank. Throughout his life, Madison never lost focus on the need to codify the individual freedoms that would become the engine of America's greatness.

I tended to think of our country's founding fathers as a band of like-minded brothers who co-operated closely post war to craft the Constitution that gave us a new and enduring government. The reality is that each of these strong-willed personalities differed sharply with one another. Coalitions formed and were later abandoned according to con-stituency, ideals, and sometimes egos.

In Madison's case, Cheney documents the shifting alliances between Madison contemporaries Patrick Henry, Alexan-der Hamilton, and John Jay. Some of his political partners became opponents, then allies again later still.

Ms. Cheney's prodigious research and well-crafted narrative captures the measure of James Madison in full and builds a solid connection between the man he became and the ideals and convictions he so passionately and success-fully advocated.

Caring for America Update

We have a twelve man aviation unit flying a special surveillance plane, in Afghanistan, for six months. Also have an airman serving in Italy, son of a local hairdresser, who would like care packages. Am sending fif-teen care packages out Friday (18th) morning.

Due to the generosity of the members and others, will not need to collect funds at the August or September Meetings.

A Nevada Army National Guard Unit is due to be deployed for "peace keeping" purposes in September. More on that at a later date.

Thanks to everyone for their great support.
