A New York Business Consultant addressed a group of executives at a leadership seminar
several years back. His topic concerned employee motivation—how to get the job done while main-
taining enthusiasm and commitment from people. He offered a lot of helpful advice, but one concept
in particular stuck in my head: “There are two things that are the most difficult to get people to do: to think,
and do things in the order of their importance.” That concept can be applied to the definition and purpose
of the Church. And in particular to our fellowship at First United Methodist Church. And our goal:
Willing Disciples Serving Christ.
Wayne Grudem has great insight for how we are to think and order the importance of the
Church. It is as follows: The Church Is The Community of All True Believer for All Time.
Paul says, “Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Eph. 5:25). Here the term “the
church” is used to apply to all those whom Christ died to redeem, all those who have accepted the
Grace of Jesus Christ. This includes all true believers for all time, both believers in the New Testa-
ment age and believers in the Old Testament age as well. So great is God’s plan for the church that he
has exalted Christ to a position of highest authority for the sake of the church: “He has put all things
under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church which is his body, the fullness of him
who fills all in all” (Eph. 1:22-23).
In Matthew 16:18 we read Jesus state: “I will build my church” (Matt. 16:18). And Luke is careful
to tell us that the growth of the church came not by human effort alone, but that “the Lord added to
their number day by day those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47).
When we think about our Church it is important to pray for Christ to guide us through the
teaching and understanding of his word. That is what I want to do with the message on Sunday wor-
ship. It is my goal to bring the word of God and to help us apply it to our personal walk with Christ.
Someone might have heard or read about the famous tightrope walker Blondin who crossed
Niagara Falls in 1860. He crossed it numerous times—a 1,000-foot trip 160 feet above the raging wa-
ters. He not only walked across it; he also pushed a wheelbarrow across it. Everyone stared in amaze-
ment. So after completing a crossing he would asked someone, “Do you believe I could take a person
across in the wheelbarrow without falling?” People would say, “Yes, sir. I really do.” Blondin’s re-
sponse, “Well then, get in.” It is a critical question. For us the question is: “Do you believe and think that
Christ can grow our church?” If you believe that then we can get in through worship attendance, bible
study and giving financial support to help build the church. We are the church A Community of All
True Believer for All Time. Willing Disciples Serving Christ.
Blessings from your pastor,
Dr. Steven Diaz
