Discussion – Down On The Beach

Introduction A day at the beach is fun for all the family – however old we are!

With foreign holidays much more rare in the past, a day at the British seaside was a big treat for most families in the 50s and 60s.

Environment and TimingAlways use a quiet room, with the television turned off, not just turned down, as moving images are very distracting.

Allow about 20 minutes for this discussion, depending on levels of interest and concentration.

Questions To Ask Where would you go to the seaside? How long for?

Where would you stay?

What would you do at the seaside?

What were favourite things to do at the seaside?

How often did you go to the seaside as a child?

Do you like swimming in the sea?

What is your favourite seaside resort? Why do you like it so much?

What is it like on a pier at a seaside resort?

What sort of things do you find on a pier? What can you do on a pier?

How would you spend part of a day on the pier?

Hand Massage

Introduction Hand massages are a great way to connect with your residents. They can relax, calm and soothe an individual, especially if they have become anxious.

It is important to set aside a time of about 10 minutes when you are not likely to be disturbed, and then dedicate that time for just that one individual.

Hand massage is also a lovely gentle activity to do for those in their rooms and those approaching end of life.

If you are not a trained or qualified masseur, it is important to steer clear of essential oils and highly scented hand creams that may damage fragile skin. It is best to use a simple hand cream or a light massage oil that is dermatologically tested for sensitive skin.

What To DoYou may want to play relaxing music, or you could just talk to the resident whilst you are doing it. You could use aromatherapy oils such as lavender or sweet orange to scent the air in a vaporiser, but do not use directly on the skin.

Very gently massage the hand and fingers up to the wrists with a smooth soft circular motion.

Let yourself be guided by the resident. Always ask permission, and explain what you are doing first. If the resident cannot communicate, look out for their body language. If they try and pull away from you or tense their hand, then don’t continue.

Show other carers and also family members how to safely massage their hands. This is something that family can do for their loved one, so it is to be encouraged.
