the Profession of Faith in the child's name and accept the responsibi lity of INSTRUCTING thechild in the faith, especially if the parents failed in this duty.

About the year 800 when infant baptism was truly the norm, these sponsors were called"patrinus" or"godfather". Traditionally, we identify the sponsor of a child for baptism as thegodparent godmother or godfather, but the technical term remains " SPONSOR."

According to the Code of Canon Law, "Insofar as possible, one to be baptized is to begiven a sponsor who is to assist an adult in Christian Initiation, or, together with the par-

ents, to present an infant at the Baptism, and who will help the baptized to lead a Christianlife in harmony with Baptism, and to fulfill faithfully the obligations connected with it" (No.872). This statement clearly reflects the historical roots of the role of sponsor.

To be a sponsor, a person must be chosen by the person to be baptized, or by the parentsor guardians of a child, or, in their absence, by the pastor or minister of the sacrament. Thesponsor must not only have the intention of being a sponsor but also meet proper qualifi-cations. The sponsor must have completed his/her sixteenth birthday.... He/she must be aCatholic who has received the Sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Confirmation, and " leadsa life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken." Moreover, the sponsor cannotbe impeded by some canonical penalty. Ideally, this sponsor at Baptism should also be thesponsor for Confirmation. Note that the mother and father of the child cannot serve as spon-sors. Also note that these are the same requirements for Confirmation sponsors. (Cf. Code of CanonLaw, No. 874.1). Strictly speaking, a person only needs one sponsor for Baptism male or female, but may have two sponsors, one male and one female. Also, in the case of an emergency, suchas imminent death, no sponsor is needed.

Here we should pause to clarify who qualifies as a Catholic godparent. A Cathol ic whodoes not practice the faith by regularly attending Mass(each week)or who is in an invalidmarriage (not married sacramentally in the Catholic Church - or is cohabiting/living together)disqualifies himself/herself from being a godparent. Moreover, if a person is Catholic butantagonistic to the faith, i.e. has the attitude "I am a Catholic but...," and would not be agood example and witness to the faith also disqualifies himself/herself. IFAPERSONISNOT

STRIVINGTOFULFILLHIS/HEROWNOBLIGATIONSOF BAPTISMAND CONFIRMATION, HE/SHEWILLNOTFULFILLTHERESPONSIBILITIESOFHELPINGANOTHERTODOSO. A single person may be a god-parent. A godparent who wishes to give a good example should also regularly take advantage ofthe Sacrament of Reconciliation /Confession.

Parents need to find good Practicing Catholics for godparents. Sadly, this task can bevery difficult in today's world!

Pastors become frustrated and perturbed each time someone comes by the parish officeand wants them to sign a sponsor's certificate and attest that he/she is a practicing Catholicwhen the pastor does not recognize him/her, they are not registered in the parish and do notattend Mass faithfully. In justice, a pastor cannot meet such a request.

Technically, only Catholics can be godparents or sponsors.A fai th-ful, PRACTICING CHRISTIAN (single or married but not cohabiting)of another denomination, whether Orthodox or Protestant, how-ever, may be a "Christian Witness" to the Baptism along with apracticing Catholic godparent. A Non-Pract ic ing Cathol ic can NOTbe a Christian Witness!

Thus the Role of Godparent-Sponsor is truly a call, a vocation, for one to have a Deep-Spiritual Relationship with Jesus Christas ones Lord and Savior and with the faith community of theChurch as well as with the child and her/his parents.

WHEN YOU HAVE A CAR TO

    DONATE, YOU AUTO

    THINKSVDP!

When you hear those radio ads en-couraging the donation of your usedcar, please keep in mind that yourcar will most likely NOT be given tosomeone who can use it. On theother hand, when you donate yourcar to St. Vincent de Paul, once wehave determined that it is safe andfunctional, we put it directly into thehands of a needy person or family,so it can be usedto drive to work,to go on family errands, or to meetthe many other practical needs forgetting around. We have no paper-work complications, no large man-agement salaries or administrativecosts to pay. So when youre readyto surrender your car, keep St. Vin-cent de Paul first on your list of op-tions. Call 630-293-9755. Well pickup the car and get it into the handsof someone who can really use it.
