Situated on the edge of the picturesque Vermilion River Valley at the crossroads of the twinned Yellowhead Highway (#16) and Highway (#41). Vermilion, AB was established as a village in 1906, and incorporated as a town later that year. The town got its name from the red clay in the river valley, and means, ‘A bright red mercuric sulphide used as a pigment.’ One early enterprise was the Vermilion Brick Factory, which operated from about 1906 to 1914, producing more than 1.5 million bricks in that time. Downtown Vermilion, AB is bursting with pride, with every building, landmark and home a thoughtful reflection of our community’s past. A self-guided walking tour reveals a fascinating history of the historic buildings in our town. Plaques are displayed on the exteriors to give you a more in depth understanding of times past, and the histories of several other buildings were compiled with a vision of future restoration. The Vermilion Heritage Museum contains cleverly designed thematic displays which tell the tale of days gone by, and is located in a restored school with six galleries, displays and Stavelock buildings.

1897 • A rancher drove the first herd of cattle into Vermilion, about two miles east of the present town.

1904 • First post office opened in at Breage, three miles east of present-day Vermilion.

1905 • Railway arrived and a station was erected.

1906 • Town incorporated. • The first school opened. • The agricultural society was formed.

1907 • Telephone service was installed.

1909 • Electric lighting. • Vermilion’s first grain elevator was built in 1909. • The Vermilion Standard newspaper was established in 1909.

1911 • Vermilion, AB operated its own lighting plant until 1953. • The provincial government established a demonstration farm on the western outskirts

of the town. Two years later this became the Vermilion School of Agriculture, known today as Lakeland College.

1918 • A devastating fire on April 10, 1918 obliterated the heart of Vermilion’s business district, razing 28 stores and business blocks. Undaunted, many businesses were quick to rebuild, and several of the post-fire structures still stand in Vermilion’s downtown core today.

1937 • An oilfield discovery east of Vermilion in 1937 signalled a new economic era. • It was the second-highest producing oilfield in Canada for the first eight months of 1941.

Preferred Stock Speckle Park Sale 1

Speckle Park had their beginning in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Their development took place in Alberta and Saskatchewan along the Yellow Head Highway between North Battleford, Saskatchewan, and Spruce Grove, Alberta. Speckle Park were only the second breed of beef cattle in Canada to be granted distinct breed status. Speckle Park are a combination of the genetics of three breeds from England and Scotland: Teeswater Shorthorn, Aberdeen Angus, and English cattle with the white park pattern. Speckle Park were named by Bill and Eillen Lamont. Both parts of the name refer to the color pattern. “Speckle” was because of the spots on the rear quarters and throughout; and “Park” because some of the Speckle Park display the white park color pattern of a white body with colored points about the ears, eyes, muzzle, lower legs and teats. Speckle instead of “spotted” probably reflects a generation familiar with the biblical story of Jacob breeding speckled cattle and sheep to outwit Laban, his father-in-law, in the thirtieth chapter of Genesis. In 1959, Eileen and Bill Lamont of Maidstone, Saskatchewan, bought their first speckled heifer from Mary Lindsay of Greenstreet, Saskatchewan. The Lamonts were breeders of Appaloosa horses and Angus cattle, and thought the cattle would go well with their herds. The idea of developing a breed came later. A monument at the side of the Yellowhead Highway at Maidstone, Saskatchewan, pays tribute to the Lamonts for their role in starting the Speckle Park breed. Mary Lindsay noticed a red roan heifer in her father’s herd a few years before and purchased the heifer. This heifer came to be a cow that always produced that color pattern regardless of the sire. It is believed the heifer was a descendent of a Teeswater Shorthorn and a bull which had the White Park color pattern. The Lamonts crossed their speckled cows with black Angus bulls. Saskatchewan, at that time, restricted ranchers from keeping any intact bulls other than purebreds. Even though sired by Angus bulls, the resulting offspring came in a variety of color patterns, some white with black points, some leopard colored and some black sided with speckled hips, white top and underline and roan faces. The Lamonts grew very interested in their Speckle Park and decided to attempt to develop a new breed. Interest in the cattle grew, not only with cattlemen but also the press. A trio

of Speckle Park steers made the trip to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1972. They were featured in Case International Publications under a section on “Minority Breeds in Canada.” Around 1983 Lloyd Pickard, a cattle promoter and Angus breeder from Alberta, included a few pages about the Speckle Park in his book “100 Years of Angus in Canada.” In 1985 Speckle Park breeders representing nine different herds met to form The Speckle Park Breeders Association. The Association was subsequently renamed The Canadian Speckle Park Association. In 1993 Agriculture Canada granted approval for the Canadian Speckle Park Association to become incorporated under the terms of the Canadian Animal Pedigree Act for the purpose developing Speckle Park cattle as an evolving breed. On February 14, 1995, ministerial approval was granted for the Canadian Speckle Park Association’s first set of by-laws. On July 6, 2006, the Canadian Speckle Park Association’s Articles of Incorporation were amended to the effect that Speckle Park became a distinct breed of purebred cattle according to the terms of the Canadian Animal Pedigree Act. A few days later the carcass of another Speckle Park steer was awarded the championship at a major all-breed carcass competition in Calgary, Alberta. The aim was to breed and develop a middle of the road, medium sized, polled, good beef animal. Thus was born a phrase often attached to the breed “A Balanced Breed with A Color Bonus.” The color patterns of Speckle Park are distinctive and certainly catch one’s eye. Their merits as beef cattle will ensure their sustainability as a distinct breed. Speckle Park have desirable traits which are advantageous to the cow calf operator, the feed lot operator, the butcher and the consumer. Consistent high quality carcass; distinctive color pattern; calving-ease; vigorous calves; maternal; calm disposition; polled; hardy and healthy; hybrid vigor; and feed efficiency. The Speckle Park reputation for carcass consistency in terms of moderate size, well marbled with only the ideal fat cover was emphatically demonstrated in the 2010 Quality Beef Competition at the Calgary Stampede. Speckle Park had six of the top ten placings. The distinctive color pattern of Speckle Park has become a brand to indicate the potential of carcass quality. The color pattern which was once used to justify discounting Speckle Park at the sale market has become a distinctive mark

Preferred Stock Speckle Park Sale2

worthy of an equal or even premium on the price. This has been demonstrated at the Annual Speckle Park Feeder Sale in Ponoka, Alberta, in October. Speckle Park cross well on almost every breed and show every indication of contributing hybrid vigor. Commericial cattlemen are taking note of how well Speckle Park cross on their commercial cows. Because of the British genetics behind Speckle Park, it stands to reason that there would be significant heterozygosity with cows with more of a background derived from the continental breeds. Speckle Park have demonstrated that they retain their carcass advantages when crossed on other breeds, either beef or dairy.

COLOR & PATTERN Speckle Park are genetically black with varying amounts of white in specific patterns. The speckle pattern is preferred but the other patterns are very much accepted. The classic speckle pattern is predominantly black with a white top line and underline, with speckled hips, and sometimes shoulders, and with a black or black roan face. The leopard pattern shows more white than the speckle pattern. On the leopard pattern the black sides of the speckle pattern are broken into a series of definite black spots. The number and size of the spots varies greatly from animal to animal. Some leopards have predominantly white sides with only a few black spots on their sides. The leopard also has a white top line and underline. In genetic terms, the classic speckle pattern and the leopard pattern appear to be the same with the difference being only in the number of spots as determined by unidentified modifiers. The third color pattern is the white with black points. Animals with this pattern are predominantly white on the body and face but always have black points, that is to say, the ears, nose, skin around the eyes, muzzle and the lower portions of the legs including the hooves are black. These same points are black on all of the patterns as are the teats. Some Speckle Park are solid black.

INHERITANCE OF THE COLOR PATTERNS

Following are presented six combinations of the Speckle Park patterns for breeding. For these purposes speckle and leopard are in effect, genetically the same, with only a variation in the frequency of spots.

Speckle x Speckle=25% white pointed; 50% speckle; 25% solid

Speckle x White Pointed=50% white pointed; 50% speckle

White Pointed x White Pointed=100% white pointed

White Pointed x Solid=100% speckle

Speckle x Solid=50% speckle; 50% solid

SUMMARY

• White with points is incompletely dominant.• The solid color pattern is recessive.• Speckle results when an individual has both the white with points gene and the solid gene.• The inheritance of speckle pattern appears to be similar to the inheritance of the roan in

Shorthorn cattle (one gene with two alleles) and the palomino color in horses (two genes).• Speckle and leopard are genetically the same except for varying degrees of spotting.• Solid colored calves probably can never be eliminated from the breed.• Speckle red, white with red points and even solid red calves do occur because some Speckle

Park with black color patterns also carry a recessive gene for red. Both parents have to carry the red gene for their calf to be red.

• Speckle Park bred to white faced cattle produces a grey face or a white face. The nose, eye rims and ears are black on the first cross.

• When Speckle Park are bred on belted cattle the calves can retain the belt over top of the other speckled patterns.

Future 20F was a calf that stopped us dead in our tracks when we laid eyes on him early last summer. We did not hesitate buying the 4-month-old calf and we’re extremely happy we did. 20F has an incredible presence about him. The way he holds his head high and moves with ease keeps your attention. He is long bodied and packed full of natural muscle. Phenotypically, Future has a lot to offer the Speckle Park breed. We admire his low birth weight to big performance numbers and his early maturing capabilities. A multi-use bull for cows and heifers, we feel he has a chance to make a difference in the Future. His dam is a long bodied, smooth made, donor-like female with a good udder and excellent feet. She is a cow that catches your eye and makes you appreciate the complete package she really is. With River Hill 26T Yager 99Y on the top side and the Raina family of P.A.R on the bottom side he has proven genetics behind him but still maintains a fresh enough pedigree for all breeders. This will be your only opportunity to purchase the exclusive United States semen rights. An investment that could see a big profit with growing excitement south of the border. The two, 6 dose packages will be your only chance to get Future semen in Canada in 2019. Homozygous Black; Heterozygous Polled; Myostatin Non-Carrier.

Of the 3 full sisters, we were lucky enough to calve out from this mating, we believe 64F is the best one. At the most recent Supreme sale two three-quarters brothers sold for $15,000 and $14,500 and a full brother sold for $10,000. This mating is as predictable and consistent as they come. Breeding her to our calving ease bull Pick-It Dynamite 2D was an easy decision as he will lock in her type and consistency. A well bred smooth made female.

Crusader X Norseman—old and new genetics collide! These represent the first embryos to sell from River Hill Smokeshack 252E (Crusader son) and the first from Spots ‘N Sprouts 14X (Norseman daughter). The 2019 calves from Smokeshack have extra flesh and thickness. We used Smokeshack again this breeding season on cows that have excess leg and frame. His calves are coming leopard and grey with dark undercarriages. The 14X donor cow leads the pack in the McAleer herd and is a cow we have followed since we first toured their herd and found Notta 151A Cause N Effect 309C. This combination is strategic and offspring are set to make their mark! Embryos harvested at controlled international flush station. Buyer pays transportation from Bow Valley, AB.

After receiving her papers, we found that her dam goes back to Parkland Speckle Park 14J and her sire’s side back to P.A.R. Kingpin 1K. She has produced excellent calves and still had an excellent udder and milk. From one flush she produced 24 grade one embryos. Underhill All Out 1D was shown across Canada and was the 2016 National Champion bull calf and 2017 National Champoin junior bull. He comes from a great Spots ‘N Sprouts production dam that is a real milk maker. All out tested homozygous polled and homozygous black. She is structurally correct, wide topped, tons of middle and a good udder. She is the granddam of the 2018 Agribition First Lady Speckle Park Breed Champion. This cow line offers longevity as well—115A’s dam is an S cow who is still producing in our herd. Ravenworth Invictus 103C is recognized throughout the breed with Canadian semen selling for $700 per straw this spring at our bull sale. He has been a standout bull since he was born. He had a very successful show career, including 2016 Agribition Reserve Champion Bull just to name one, and now is the cornerstone of our bull pen. Invictus stamps all of his calves. He is a smooth made bull, with a strong topline, great muscle shape and an absolutly wonderful temperament. We currently have milking daughters, first calvers, in our herd and they are doing an excellent job. Many of the progeny from the Acadia cow line have been high sellers and many of the Invictus progeny have also topped our sales, so this combination brings two very strong lines from our herd together. TO BE ANNOUNCED SALE DAY

Preferred Stock Speckle Park Sale34

We are excited to be taking part in this new elite

Speckle Park sale. It has been a tough decision to

disperse our herd of registered Speckle Park cattle.

What we have offered in this sale is the BEST cattle

in our herd, sourcing from my parents herd.

We purchased our first Speckle Park cattle

back in 2009. We raised and registered cattle under

Matters Speckle Park until 2015, when sadly my

dad passed away. My mom and I took over the

ranch together under the same herd name. My mom

held her dispersal sale in 2018 and I took over the

remaining herd under Bar 4M Ranch, with my

partner Bradley Hofer and son Joseph.

We take great pride in our cattle and are pleased

to present this supreme opportunity to purchase some

great cattle with bloodlines that are both proven and

outcross genetics.

Thank you to Layne Pickett and Niki Ross for

fitting, photography and videos of our sale cattle.

We wish to thank all our past and present buyers and

bidders for your support of our program and for all

the great “cow” talks over the years.

Best Regards to all our fellow Speckle Park

breeders, friends and enthusiasts.

Much success to you all!

She is an awesome cow who is definitely front pasture style. Her heifer calf is a young, well made, structurally sound female with that sought after square body.
