Invocation

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice;

in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. (Psalm 5:3)

My mouth is filled with your praise,

declaring your splendor all day long. (Psalm 71:8) O Lord, open my lips,

and my mouth will declare your praise. (Psalm 51:15) Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea;

hear me and answer me. Evening, morning and noon

I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice. Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you;

he will never let the righteous fall. (Psalm 55:1–2,17,22) Our help is in the name of the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth. (Psalm 124:8) Hear my prayer, O Lord;

listen to my cry for mercy. In the day of my trouble I will call to you,

for you will answer me. Teach me your way, O Lord,

and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart,

that I may fear your name. I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart;

I will glorify your name forever. (Psalm 86:6,7,11-12)

Jeremiah 15:15-21

You understand, O LORD; remember me and care for me. Avenge me on my persecu-tors. You are long-suffering--do not take me away; think of how I suffer reproach for your sake. When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart's de-light, for I bear your name, O LORD God Almighty. I never sat in the company of revel-ers, never made merry with them; I sat alone because your hand was on me and you

Page 3: August 31 2014

had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unending and my wound grievous and incurable? Will you be to me like a deceptive brook, like a spring that fails? Therefore this is what the LORD says: "If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them. I will make you a wall to this people, a for-tified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you," declares the LORD. I will save you from the hands of the wicked and redeem you from the grasp of the cruel." This is the Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

Romans 12:9-21

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one an-other in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. This is the Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

Matthew 16:21-28

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but

Page 4: August 31 2014

whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. 28 I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” (NIV) This is the Gospel of the Lord

Praise to You O Christ.

The Apostle's Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Message

Offering

Song During Offering: Here I Am, Lord I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry.

All who dwell in dark and sin, My hand will save. I, who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.

Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Chorus

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, If you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people's pain.

I have wept for love of them. They turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, Give them hearts for love alone.

I will speak my Word to them. Whom shall I send? Chorus

Page 5: August 31 2014

I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them; My hand will save.

Finest bread I will provide 'til their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send?

Chorus

Prayers

Song I can only imagine what it will be like, When I walk by Your side

I can only imagine what my eyes will see, When Your Face is before me! I can only imagine. I can only imagine.

Surrounded by Your Glory, what will my heart feel?

Will I dance for you, Jesus? Or in awe of You, be still? Will I stand in Your presence, or to my knees will I fall?

Will I sing Hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all? I can only imagine! I can only imagine!

I can only imagine, when that day comes, When I find myself standing in the Son.

I can only imagine, when all I will do, Is forever, forever worship You! I can only imagine! I can only imagine!

(Repeat Chorus)

I can only imagine, when all I will do, Is forever, forever worship You! I can only imagine!

Message

Confession & Absolution

Let us be honest with God and identify ourselves before him.

Eternal God, our judge and Redeemer; we confess that we have tried to hide from you, for we have done wrong. We have lived for ourselves. We have refused to shoulder the troubles of others, and have turned away from our neighbors. We have ignored the pain of others, and passed by the hungry, the poor, and the oppressed. We are weak, sinful human beings who deserve your wrath and everlasting punishment. But we are also your

Page 6: August 31 2014

baptized children, and so we come before you in the name of our Lord Je-sus Christ, seeking your forgiveness. Forgive us and set us free from out selfishness, that we may choose your will and obey your commandments; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(There will be a moment of silence for personal reflection before the pastor speaks God’s assurance of forgiveness)

Benediction

Closing Song: To Him Who By The Power Within

To Him who by the pow’r within Is able to do more than we can To Him be glory without end

Amen. Amen
