Adult learners are valuable in today’s workplace. If you have read recent job postings, you will see that

they are vastly different than they used to be. In years past, most job postings were very specifi c in their skill requirements and there was no room for discussion. In today’s

knowledge economy, job postings often have the key phrase, “A com-bination of skills and experience will be considered.” This means employers recognize the value in experience combined with recent skills.

CURRENT SKILLSMAKE YOUR EXPERIENCE RELEVANTIf experience is the great equalizer, then experience combined with skills, create fabulous employees. A recent focus group of employers indicated that adult learners with

a few years of any job experience who have upgraded their skills to meet the current market demand, are fi ve times more valuable than workers with just training and no experience.

TRANSFERABLESKILLS ARE THE NAMEOF THE GAME!Take this skills inventory self-test:

• I have various day-to-day responsibilities Y/N

• I manage my family’s schedule well Y/N

• I am in charge of personal fi nances Y/N

• I communicate with many different people frequently Y/N

• I have had varied jobs in the past Y/N

If you answered YES to any one of these questions, guess what? You have transferable skills – skills that make you an important asset to employers. Adult workers under-stand priorities, tend to be orga-nized, and communicate well with others. Younger workers typically have not developed these abilities yet when entering the workforce.

CAREER SPECIFICTRAINING IS INHIGH DEMANDTo be successful in the marketplace, workers need to be trained at the college and university level. Over the next ten years, 77% of jobs

will require post-secondary train-ing. Career programs, such as the ones found at Sprott Shaw meet this need and are typically under a year in length - getting students working sooner, rather than later. Sprott-Shaw programs have been designed in conjunction with em-ployers to meet current demands and teach the skills necessary to get students employed right away.

KNOW YOUR OPTIONS– HAVE A PLANSprott Shaw is committed to assist-ing anyone who is looking at going back to school – and works to sim-plify the process. Career Advisors provide guidance in program and

funding options, as well as work with students to develop a well thought out plan of action. They’ll not only help you with your bud-get, but will also walk you through the student loan process. They take your future seriously and are passionate about graduate suc-cess. Darla Lamberty, Advisor at the Penticton campus says, “Every-one should have the opportunity to change their life through educa-tion, that’s why I love what I do!” Visit our Penticton Campus today to fi nd out more about what your new career could be.

Hardwood fl oors and lam-inates are much better looking, more durable, eco friendly and more

affordable than wood fl oors of years ago.New construction styles make it necessary for manufacturers to provide many different kinds of products to serve the industry. A buyer can choose from dozens of species of woods, in dark or light colours, with a wide variety of grain patterns and fi nishes. You’ll love a hardwood fl oor for warmth and elegance it lends a room, and today’s hardwood fl ooring options allow you to select just the right one for your decor.

FAST FACTSWhen shopping for Wood Floors, remember this is a life long prod-uct of natural beauty and durabil-

ity. From its sustainable source to its healthy qualities indoors, wood fl ooring makes a smart choice for the worlds’s environment and the environment in your own home.

ABOUT WOOD FLOORS• Real wood fl oors can last the life of the home and are good for the home’s resale value.• Wood fl oors do not trap dust, fumes and will not harbor dust mites or mold.• You can redecorate your wood fl oor entirely with stain, paints and inlays without replacing ma-terial.• Every piece of wood is a fi nger print of mother nature; no two pieces of wood have the same grain pattern, or shade variation. This unique property results in every fl oor being unique, every room a customized room.

THINGS TO ASK/KNOWYour sales person is your best ally in making the right buying decisions; you will need to know about species and upgrading variances. Ask how the wood will behave to humidity and tem-perature changes. Ask about the different products, how they are installed and where they can be installed. What size and kind of moldings will be required for fi n-ishing the installation? Ask what you can expect for milling toler-ances and how will small gaps, cracks be fi lled.What species of wood do you like? Every wood species has dif-ferent properties, such as den-sity {indentation resistance}, stain ability {some woods accept stain better than others} and stability to moisture changes. Ask how will the wood age {Patina/colour in wood fl oors changes over time, some will be slight, some will be moderate, and some of the exot-ics are quite dramatic}

FINISHESAll hardwood fl ooring fi nishes, whether applied at a hardwood fl oor manufacture’s factory or on

the job site, are there to protect the wood from soiling. That is the fi nishes primary function. Some fi nishes are better for scuff resis-tance, some for chemical resis-tance, some are better for luster retention. There is no fi nish that stops hardwood fl oors from in-dentations, cuts or scratches. An-imal claws, high heels, small rests on furniture legs, castors and even brass studs from jeans, may/will indent and or scratch wood fl oors. Finishes do not change or increase the density/compression resistance of wood. The manufacturers of prefi nished hardwood fl oors and the manu-facturers of the hardwood fi nish-es all publish guaranties outlining what whey will and won’t warran-ty. Read them before you make your decision.Choose the species and grade that will be right for you, it will be with you for long time. Please enjoy your hardwood fl oor, walk on it, live on it. Life’s dings and marks are beauty spots and its part of the character of wood fl oors! There are no treasured antiques that don’t have a few of those spots. Everyone has mar-veled at the beauty of a hard-wood fl oor, why not make it part of your home decor. Our commitment for customer service, quality and selection has led us to an addition to our Nu-fl oors’ suppliers. Decide what kind of truck will work for your needs. Consider all of your needs and what you will

be using the truck for, this will help you decide the class of truck you will need. If you will be using it to haul or carry around large loads, then you will need a full sized truck.

If you decide that you will not be-ing using it for bigger hauls, then maybe a smaller truck will work and it will save you money on fuel. By assessing your needs fi rst, this will greatly help you narrow down your choices when you are at the dealership.

DECIDE WHAT IS GOINGTO FIT YOUR BUDGETBefore going to the dealership, make sure you have a budget in mind. This will help you decide on a price and a payment that will fi t into your monthly bills. By knowing the truck you want and what kind of budget you are working with, you will fi nd that it is a much more

enjoyable buying experience. Plus it will save you the time of looking through a bunch of trucks that are out of your budget.

CONSIDER WHAT YOUWILL BE USING IT FORTake the time to really think about what you will using the truck for. Will the truck only be used for work or should you consider a four door type cab, so that it can be used to shuttle the family around in a pinch. You should also consider the tow capacities, payload and bed size. If you are going to haul more than 9500 pounds, you will need a full sized truck. If you have a quad or any other recreational vehicle, is a

long box better than a short box, again, it depends on your needs.

CHOOSE THE RIGHTDEALERSHIPThis is important because the pur-chase of a new truck is probably the second biggest purchase, be-hind a house, that you will make in your lifetime. To have a reputable dealership that stands behind its products is important in case any problems may arise.

CHOOSE THE RIGHTSALESPERSONThe right salesperson is critical. You should have a good report with the salesperson, do they answer your questions? Do they listen to your wants and needs? If not, ask for another salesperson or a manager that will. The difference between a great buying experience and a terrible one can sometimes be just the rapport one has with their salesperson.

CONSIDER THESERVICE DEPARTMENTConsidering that the relationship between you and the service de-partment is usually a longer one than that of the salesperson, it is just as important to consider. Make sure that you are introduced to the service department and that they know you have just made a substantial purchase at their deal-ership. At Parkers Chrysler Dodge Jeep we have an extensive ser-vice department as well as a body shop. All of our certifi ed mechan-ics and service writers value every customer and they are dedicated to making your servicing an enjoy-able experience.

WHAT IS ASSISTED LIVING? Assisted Living residences offer housing, hospitality services and personal assistance services to adults who can live independently, but may require regular help with daily activities. Assisted living is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of people.

WHAT IS COMPLEX CARE? Complex Care provides compas-sionate care for adults who are dealing with a “life-altering” com-plex condition resulting from in-jury or disease. Complex Care provides medical management, skilled 24 hour nursing and a range of interdisciplinary diagnostic and therapeutic services to optimize the quality of life of individuals who have a chronic or complex condition.Once you have determined the type of care that you or your fam-

ily member needs, there are a few more important points to consid-er: Be sure to take into consideration whether or not the Care Home can provide increasing levels of care for your future health require-ments. Some Care Home’s do not have the ability to signifi cantly in-crease the level of care provided, should you or your spouse require a higher level of care in the future. Does the care home provide the unique ability to have one spouse reside in assisted living while the other spouse lives in complex care, keeping husband and wife togeth-er in the same residence?Be “pro-active”, this is a big deci-sion – so do the research! Is the Care Home located in a great loca-tion – close to shopping, pathways, pharmacy, transportation, family and friends? Does the Care Home provide planned activities and rec-

reation/fi tness areas? Does the Care Home have their own bus for group day trips and outings? Find out what “extra” activities and “in-house” services are available. Community is the essence of life at a Care Home and residents are encouraged to participate in activi-ties that promote socializing and new friendships. Take a look at the Care Home’s “Activity Calendar” - is it designed specifi cally for fi t-ness, fun and companionship? Once you have created a list of Care Home options, make an ap-pointment for a tour of the facility and come prepared with a list of questions. What does the monthly rent “include” and what does it “not include”? Consider renting a guest suite for a week to experi-ence what it is all about! Become as informed as you can about the residence – Does it make you feel at home? – warm, bright, friendly

and inviting? Does the Care Home create an environment and life-style that adapts as the needs of each resident changes? Everyone experiences life differently, and the Care Home needs to provide a stimulating and fulfi lling environ-ment for each and every resident in it’s care.

THINGS YOUNEED TO KNOW:• Has an “inclusive” monthly rental package• Has increasing levels of care• Has lots of “extra” social activities and “in-house” services• Has a convenient central location• Has friendly, caring staff in a warm, welcoming home environment

After the incredible re-sponse we received fol-lowing our, “Ask the Doctor”, article released

in October 2010 regarding facial hair growth in women, we decided to discuss this topic in further de-tail. Almost everyone has unwanted hair growth somewhere on their body. Laser Hair Reduction (LHR) is an FDA approved, safe and effec-tive way of permanently reducing this unwanted hair. Many women and men throughout the Okanagan Valley are fi nally experiencing free-dom from shaving, waxing, razor rash, ingrown hairs and embarrass-ing re-growth because they have found a permanent solution with advanced laser technology at Pen-ticton Laser and Skin Clinic. One of our most popular LHR treatments is for women suffering from excess facial hair growth. This is an issue that many women don’t even dis-cuss with their families or closest

friends; therefore, it can be very diffi cult for them to reach out for help, or they may not even know that help is available. This type of growth is a common concern for millions of women throughout North America and, in most cases, it can be treated. It is perfectly normal for women to have a very fi ne, soft layer of hair on the face and body. However, ‘Hir-sutism’ refers to the thick, coarse, and often dark hair which typically appears on areas such as the face, neck, chest, abdomen and back, but can also appear anywhere else on the body.Hirsutism is a concern for many women, regardless of their age, race or ethnicity. In the majority of cases, this is not caused by a seri-ous medical condition; however; to achieve the best possible results, the cause should be determined by your doctor prior to treatment. There are various factors that can contribute to excess hair growth in women such as: puberty, pregnan-cy, menopause, hormonal imbal-ances, genetics, stress, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), idio-pathic hirsutism and some medica-tions. Laser Hair Reduction is our treat-ment of choice to permanently reduce unwanted face and/or body hair. We mentioned ear-lier that facial LHR treatments are very popular for women, but facial treatments are also a great choice for men who are tired of shaving and tired of dealing with the re-sulting skin irritation, razor rash, and ingrown hairs. Other common treatment areas include: bikini line, underarms, legs, toes, chest, back, forearms etc. Just imagine… no more stubble! This treatment is most effective in people with dark brown or black hair and light skin; however, it can

also be used on some individuals with darker skin types. We will not treat over tanned skin; there-fore, all our laser clients must know the importance of sun protection throughout the course of their treatments. All laser treated ar-eas are photosensitive for up to 4 weeks after treatment and unpro-tected sun exposure could cause damaging effects to the skin. During treatment, the laser will emit pulses of light, which will tar-get the melanin (brown pigment), travel along the hair shaft and de-liver heat into the active hair fol-licles, eventually destroying them forever. Treatment time varies for different areas; however, a typical appointment is usually only fi fteen to thirty minutes from start to fi n-ish. The skin may appear slightly red and/or swollen after treatment for up to 2 hours. A reduction of 60-80% is common after 4-8 treat-ments; however, when the hair growth is due to hormonal factors, maintenance treatments may be required. Penticton Laser and Skin Clinic of-fers a complementary consultation with a highly qualifi ed laser tech-nician to discuss whether or not you are an ideal candidate for laser hair removal. This meeting gen-erally includes discussion about your health history, genetic back-ground, your expectations, treat-ment considerations, as well as the benefi ts and rare but possible risks associated with the procedure. At this time you will also receive a list of pre and post treatment instruc-tions. Please, call us today to book your complementary consultation. The possibilities are endless and the re-sults are amazing!

Tips for Buying Real Estate

Buying a residence can be a stress-ful experience. You will experi-ence a roller coaster of emotions while fi nding the right place, se-

curing the loan and fi nally moving in. For most of us, the fi rst time home purchase is the largest investment we’ve ever con-sidered. The emotions of purchasing something so expensive and personal can often cloud our business judgment.

View Several HomesSee at least 7-10 properties. Don’t move too slowly but don’t move on the fi rst property you see. With your agent’s help you should be able to view enough prop-erties to get a good overall perspective of the home market. When you fi nd the right property all the leg work will be worth it.

Utilize Your TeamBy aligning yourself with the right real es-tate professional you will have an entire team at your disposal. Utilize your lender, legal professional and agent, each of them should work hand in hand for your benefi t. Explore all the options before you sign.

Loyalty Breeds LoyaltyBe open, honest and up front with your team. Hard feelings and disloyalty will cause headaches, delays or may even keep you from getting into the home you worked so hard to locate. Take the time to select the right team in the beginning and your home purchase will be a pleas-ing and memorable experience.

Home Buying ProcessMoving can be very exciting but it can also be very stressful as there are so many things to remember to do! Don’t despair; whether you are doing it on your own, asking friends for some help, or hir-ing professionals, here is a quick guide to help you get through the buying pro-cess.

Get Pre-approvedA pre-approved mortgage can be done for 60-90 days for FREE.

Don’t “low-ball” your initial offerVendors tend to give less of a counter offer (closer to list price), if they feel in-sulted. Understand the current market value of the home by reviewing compa-rable SOLDS.

Have your agent help you arrange a home inspection

A home inspection with a professional home inspector costs about $400.00 (approx). It could very well be your best money spent. You want to know exactly what you are buying.

Arrange an accelerated Bi-weekly payment plan on your mortgage. On your mortgage, you will save the most money if you opt for an accelerated weekly or Bi-weekly payment plan, or if you double up one payment per year. This will shorten your amortization peri-ods by over 6 years!

Be sure to check into your law-yer’s fees ahead of time. These are separate from disbursements. Ask your agent, who will be able to refer you to reliable professionals.

Reasons to BuyThere are many reasons why you should consider jumping into the real estate market and buying a home. Below is a list of reasons why you should seriously consider it.• To Quit RentingWhy contribute to someone else’s mort-gage payments when you could be pay-ing off your own? With the current mar-ket increase in rent it can sometimes be cheaper to own than it is to rent and there is no fear of your mortgage pay-ments suddenly increasing.• SecurityYou don’t have to worry about your house being sold out from under you.• InvestmentHistory has shown that the price of real estate continues to increase over time and therefore becomes one of the saf-est long term investments a person can make. If you had the choice between put-ting money towards a new car or a new house, a house should win every time as it will appreciate in value over the years whereas a car does the opposite. Once you own one house and build some equi-ty you may also be in a fi nancial position to upgrade your current home or to buy another as an investment.• Low Interest RatesRight now we have some great interest rates which will help you get your foot on the fi rst rung of home ownership. It is a great time to get into the market and lock into a really good interest rate and build equity.• Pride of OwnershipOne of the biggest reasons people buy properties is the pride of saying they own something. Even if it is a little starter home or apartment style condo, it is yours and you can do with it as you please, and for that, a person should be proud as owner-ship is an accomplishment.• PrivacyIf you own your own house you don’t ever have to worry about the owners checking up on you, since you are the owner! You will gain much more independence and privacy when you have your own prop-erty.• EquityOne of the best things about owning a home is that you are building equity, which gives you more freedom fi nancially. You may borrow against the equity you

have built in your home for a wide variety of reasons including home improvements, paying for school for your children, medi-cal reasons, or even starting your own business. Check with your lender as these vary from one to the next.• Sense of CommunityOwning a house gives you a feeling of belonging in that neighborhood and gives you the sense of putting down roots and getting established. There are also many neighborhood groups that you can become involved in, and if you have children it may be of benefi t for schools and friends.

Seller Tips• Make the most of that fi rst impres-sionA well manicured lawn, neatly trimmed shrubs and a clutter-free porch help real estate sellers put their best foot forward and make prospects feel welcome. So does a freshly painted – or at least fresh-ly scrubbed – front door. If it’s autumn, rake the leaves. If it’s winter, shovel the walkways. The fewer obstacles between prospects and the true appeal of the real estate seller’s home, the better.

• Invest a few hours for future divi-dendsHere’s your chance to clean up in real es-tate. Tidy the living room, the bathroom, the kitchen. If your woodwork is scuffed or the paint is fading, consider some minor touch-ups and redecorating. Real estate sellers can benefi t from updating the hardware on kitchen cabinets, add-ing new slipcovers to sofas and keeping a vase of fresh fl owers in the entryway. These are some of the simple touches that can go a long way. If you’re worried about time, hire professional cleaners or painters to help get your house ready. Remember, prospects would rather see how great the real estate seller’s home really looks than hear how great it could look “with a little work.”

• Don’t shut out a saleIf cabinets or closet doors stick in your home, you can be sure they will also stick in a prospect’s mind. Don’t try to explain away sticky situations when you can eas-ily plane them away. A little effort on the real estate seller’s part can smooth the way toward a closing.

• Think safetyReal estate sellers learn to live with all kinds of self-set booby traps: roller blades on the stairs, festooned extension cords, slippery throw rugs and low-hang-ing overhead lights. Make sure your resi-dence is as safe as possible for visitors.

• Make room for spaceRemember, potential buyers are look-ing for more than just comfortable living space. They’re looking for storage space, too. Real estate sellers should make sure attics and basements are clean and free of unnecessary items.

• Consider your closetsThe better organized a closet, the larger it appears. Now’s the time to box up those unwanted clothes and donate them to charity.

• Make your bathroom sparkleBathrooms sell homes, so let them shine.

Check and repair damaged or unsightly caulking in the tubs and showers. Repair leaking faucets. For added allure, real es-tate sellers should display the best tow-els, mats and shower curtains.

• Create dream bedroomsWake up prospects to the cozy comforts of your bedrooms. For a specious look, get rid of excess furniture. Colorful bed-spreads and fresh curtains are a must if real estate sellers want buyers to be able to imagine relaxing there.

• Open up in the daytimeLet the sun shine in! Real estate sellers should pull back curtains and drapes so that prospects can see how bright and cheery the home is.

• Lighten up at nightTurn on the excitement buy turning on all your lights – both inside and outside – when showing your home in the eve-ning. Make sure all burned out lights are replaced. Lights add color and warmth, and make prospects feel welcome.

• Avoid crowded scenesPotential buyers often feel like intruders when they enter a home fi lled with peo-ple. Rather than giving your house the at-tention it deserves, they’re likely to hurry through. Real estate sellers should keep the company present to a minimum, in fact its best if you’re not there when your home is being shown. However if that’s not possible, be friendly – but it’s not nec-essary to force conversation. Prospects want to view the home with minimal dis-traction from the real estate seller. Keep a low profi le. Nobody knows a home better than the real estate seller. But your Real Estate Sales Associates know buyers – what they need and what they want. Your Real Estate Associate will have an easier time articulating the virtues of your home if you stay in the background.

• Watch your petsDogs and cats are great companions, but not when real estate sellers are showing their homes. Pets have a talent for get-ting underfoot. So do everybody a favor: Keep your pets out of the way.

• Defer to experienceWhen prospective buyers want to talk price, terms or other real estate matters, let them speak to an expert – your Real Estate Sales Associate. As the real estate seller, you might feel tempted to weigh in, but your two cents could cost you much more. Real Estate Associates have an easier time selling homes if showings are scheduled through their offi ces. And real estate sellers appreciate the results.

Choose anAutomotiveService andCollision Centre

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHERE TO BRING YOUR VEHICLE? Choosing a Repair Shop is sometimes the hardest step. A business that has been around for years and has a good reputation would be the place of choice, but it all comes down to trust. The best shops have fully trained technicians that continually go to school and update their training and use the latest equipment to do the job right the fi rst time to satisfy all your expectations. A good idea is to check out a repair shop fi rst by stopping by and seeing how it is run or have them per-form a minor service like an oil change to see how they handle your repair. This usually will give you a better idea of what you can expect before a major repair happens. The shop you choose should treat you with respect, courte-sy and must show you that they are trustwor-thy by being upfront and honest, explaining fully all services and charges rendered.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & RESOURCESNew automobiles today are expensive invest-ments requiring highly skilled, trained and experienced technicians who can diagnose and repair the most sophisticated systems in today’s motor vehicles. Larger shops have the advantage of up-to-date equipment and manuals for more productive and effi cient repairs. A shop that has Certifi ed Factory Trained Technicians and maintains their train-ing on a yearly basis is a better choice as they are up on all the new technologies, skills and technical bulletins.

WHY CHOOSE SKAHA FORD?We make it easy, not only has Skaha Ford been the #1 Place for Mechanical Services 2 years running, as voted by you in the Best of the South Okanagan. Our Service Centre is the place to go to for regular maintenance or repairs – whether for your new Ford or any other make vehicle. Regular maintenance servicing at Skaha Ford guarantees your war-ranty on your Ford stays intact. We also check your vehicle for recalls from the manufacture every time you come in for your safety.

When you come in for a service, we take the time to explain what’s needed. We’ll repair it right the fi rst time. Our Service Advisor Staff and Certifi ed Technicians are factory trained with members of our team being highly rated as Master Certifi ed. Get your vehicle looked after by people that really know their stuff.

Come down and get an estimate on any re-pair or match us to an estimate you already have and see for yourself. Relax in our lounge or take advantage of our shuttle service to do the things you want while we repair your vehicle, then drive away with confi dence in your fully repaired vehicle. We also add a special perk for our valued customers each and every time you come in, we will give your pride and joy a complementary car wash and vacuum as our thank you for servicing with Skaha Ford.

At Skaha Ford we care for the environment too, disposing of all waste material respon-sibly. Using the waste oil to heat our shop, recycling tires, metal, plastics & batteries and disposing of chemicals to approved facility to improve our footprint on the environment.

WHY CHOOSE GENUINE FORD PARTS? The parts in your vehicle go to work every time you hit the road. Just as the people that work on your vehicle should be qualifi ed and well-trained experts, the parts they use in the repair should be recommended specifi cally for your vehicle. A part that fi ts properly will not only help it perform better, it can last lon-ger as well - which means you can save mon-ey by replacing fewer parts, less often. Ford Motor Company Genuine Parts, Motorcraft Parts and Ford and Motorcraft remanufac-tured Parts are all excellent choices when it comes to performance, longevity and value. And they are parts backed by a Ford Motor Company parts limited warranty (see dealer for details), so you know the parts you use are

going to perform like they should.

WHY CHOOSE SKAHA FORD COLLISION, PAINT AND GLASS REPLACEMENT CENTER We are here to serve you in getting your ve-hicle back to pre-incident condition. We are ICBC Accredited and we also work with all other insurance companies and are happy to assist in the processing of your claim in any way that we can. Our state of the art facility is equipped with latest measuring and paint technology to en-sure your vehicle is repaired to your satisfac-tion. All of our technicians are certifi ed and have many years of automotive repair expe-rience. For your convenience, we provide a courtesy vehicle while your vehicle is being repaired. We offer exceptional customer ser-vice and work on all makes and models.

Proudly Serving the South Okanagan for over 30 Years

Buying a pre-owned vehicle offers the best value for the cash investment, and provides the buyer with a

wide variety of makes and models from which to choose. But with that value comes a few considerations before driving that vehicle away.

Before you start scanning the pa-pers, surfi ng the net or cruising the dealerships, it’s important to de-termine a list of wants and needs when it comes to your next vehi-cle.

ASSESS NEEDSWith the wide variety of vehicles available for ready purchase, it can be easy to be swayed by make and model, rather than by function and economy. What are you mainly us-ing your vehicle for? Are you driv-ing to work every day - short trips,

lots of shopping? Is it mostly for longer trips, highway driving? Do you prefer a manual or automatic transmission? Do you need to con-sider the towing capacity? How much seating will you need on a regular basis?

WISH LISTThis is your opportunity to consid-er make, model and colour. Is there a make or model that you prefer? Do you want air conditioning or a CD player, do you have a penchant for leather seats or prefer fabric? Insure you take the opportunity to lest drive the vehicle.

BUDGETThis is the time to consider value over price. If you have a strict price range you need to stick to, consid-er how you can get the best vehicle for the amount you are prepared to spend. Does this mean getting less wish list extras to ensure all the ‘needs’ are taken care of? If spend-ing less now means more money will be spent on maintenance with-in a year, is it better to fi nd a big-ger budget?

WHERE SHOULD YOUBUY YOUR USED VEHICLE? There are many options for fi nd-ing a used vehicle - from private owners to dealerships. Although we can’t say you will defi nitely fi nd a better vehicle or receive better

service from any one of these, the dealer has more at risk than a pri-vate seller. Chances are, a dealer-ship will ensure you get the most safe, reliable vehicle at the best value for your dollar. Consider the following options when looking at a used vehicle.

Reputable DealersWord of mouth is the strongest form of positive, and negative ad-vertising, and car dealers know this better than anyone else. New and used dealers work hard to provide impeccable service. Car dealer-ships in B.C. are regulated by the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority of B.C. (VSA). The VSA enforces the Motor Dealer Act and all its regu-lations, and it is mandatory for all motor dealers and their retail ve-hicle sales staff to be licensed. You can be confi dent that the dealer is adhering to a specifi c code of con-duct when selling you a vehicle.

Accident HistoryIf the vehicle has ever been in an accident, those declarations must be made by law to the dealer, and in sequence to any buyer. Ask to see the Car Proof or ICBC his-tory. If the seller isn’t a registered dealer, they may not be aware of the laws surrounding vehicle sales.

Service HistoryFull disclosure of service history

provides you the buyer with an idea of what kind of future you will have with your new car. If it’s seven years old, and only ever had oil changes, you can probably look forward to several major repairs, whereas, a properly maintained vehicle can run well for many years without breakdowns and loss of service.

Safety InspectionsDealers of new and used cars have safety inspections that cover doz-ens of points on the vehicle, and can tell you a lot about how the car was driven and how it was main-tained.

Vehicle HistoryKnowing not only who owned the vehicle, but what it was used for and who drove it, can be invaluable knowledge. Do your homework.

WarrantiesIf the vehicle is still fairly new, is there an existing warranty in place? What value does that have, and does it justify the ticket price? Does the dealership offer an ex-tended warranty program on all pre-owned vehicles.

So, good luck with your vehicle search and we hope you enjoy the season behind the wheel of your new (to you) vehicle.
