This summer is flying by. It won’t be long before we have to get the snow blowers and shovels out! (I’ll be waiting

for your cards & letters telling me what I can do with my snow blowers & shovels!) Usually, by this time of year, my

yard has started to brown up a little, but with all our rain, there is no sign of that, yet. As I sit here composing this

article, it is mid July and the heat & humidity is running rampant! Living up in the U.P., one mile from Lake Superi-

or, we didn’t have air conditioning, nor was it needed. I can remember just a few days every summer where AC

would have been nice. Unfortunately, growing up under these conditions, I have a hard time dealing with the heat

& humidity found in this area, and find my energy greatly lagging! Maybe it affects you all this way, I don’t know.

As I said before, the summer is flying! August 24 is our annual big show, the “Summer Spectacular.” It seemed,

just a short while ago, that we had plenty of time to plan for the show, but now we discover that in just a few weeks,

we will be opening the gates, on a hopefully, clear, beautiful morning to let all the show cars and spectators in for

another day of fun. As you all know, Tim Hanna has had other things on his mind, so Jerry Forness and myself

stepped forward to take up some of his load. There is a lot of work to be done for an event this size, and I’m al-

ways concerned that, somewhere, we are forgetting something, but I’m sure it will all work out in the end. As of the

last meeting, there are still some work slots available. If you have an interest in joining in the fun, give Tim, Jerry,

or me a call, and I’m certain we can find something for you to do. The hardest part of the whole deal is deciding

which size t-shirt you would fit into!

In the weeks preceding the TSS, we will have two reunions to attend, my 55th high school reunion in Marquette,

MI, and my navy ship reunion in Buffalo, NY. Unfortunately, as the years pass by the numbers attending each get

less and less. We’re just thankful we still have the health & energy to do these things! Hopefully, by the time of our

big show, I’ll have some good stories to tell. See you out there somewhere! DB

DUANE’S WORLD

Source for Street Rod Work By Ron Willson

Many of you who frequented Dick’s Hot Rod Shop in the past may remember Charlie Hyatt, who left a couple years ago, if my memory serves me right, to take a job with a tool company. Charlie did much of the work on my ’57 Chev, including the A/C and exhaust system. Well, I ran into him and his family at Back to the 50’s, and he’s opening his own business. Initially, it will be run out of his garage at his home in Lonsdale, but he hopes to see the

business grow so he can rent space closer to the south metro area. Give him a call if you need some work done. I’ve always found Charlie to be very honest and willing to explore options with you, not to mention just give you advice if you aren’t sure how to proceed.

June 2019 meeting as printed in the Cruz News. The motion passed.

The motion was seconded by Anita Brown, and the motion passed. A call for bills was made. Duane Barclay sub-

mitted a bill for $440.00 for the TSS 2019 golf carts. Tim Hanna added a side note that one less cart is being or-

dered this year, bringing the total of carts down to six. Terry Stade made a motion to pay the bill; it was seconded

by Chell Graigie; and the motion passed. Jim Neher reported that he received 9 TSS pre-registrations, this

month, for a total of $90.00, bringing the total for this year to 19. A sponsorship check for $2,000.00 was received

from Lake Marion Collision.

Membership Chairperson: Jim Neher reported that club membership is 96 (170 total). No new members this

month, and new club rosters were available. Jim also reported that he still has a trunk load of TSS flyers available

to anyone who wishes to hand them out.

Events: Anita Brown reported that the Ladies’ Night Out event is on hiatus until September. Tim Hanna reported

that the Augustana Regents Home in Burnsville will be holding their family event on Wednesday, July 24, from

1:30 - 3 p.m. with an emphasis on root beer floats!

Kemper reported that, at this time, she is not aware of any member in the hospital, or at home recovering.

on a good pig roast during the Pan-O-Prog car cruise.

New Business: Jack Keenan sent out 9 hard copies of the July Cruz News. Jack also reported that, because of a

membership change, the number of hard copies will drop to 8 next month. Jerry Forness reported that the club

Facebook page has received a total of 515 “Likes” and has been viewed by 4,370 people.

TSS Business: Tim Hanna reported that there are still some jobs available for the event. Any members interested

in a job should contact Tim, Jerry Forness, or Duane Barclay to be put on the worker’s list. Sponsors are also

needed. If any members have door prizes to donate, please bring them to the August meeting, the McIntoshes

will be there to collect them. Pepsi will be donating pop & water. Bill Kantos and his MSRA inspection crew will be

on the grounds for anyone wishing to have their car inspected that day. Worker’s tee shirts were available at the

meeting, and will also be brought to the next meeting for distribution.

MSRA: Terry Stade reported that MSRA and the State Fairgrounds have not made available the numbers for

“Back to the Fifties.”

The next meeting will be at Apple Valley Ford in Apple Valley on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, at 7 p.m. A mo-

tion to adjourn the meeting was made by Joy Hanna; seconded by Karen Keenan; and the motion carried. The

DON GROFF DEBUTS HIS INDY STYLE, STREET LEGAL, STREET ROD

Although not a Southern Cruzer, Don Groff is well known as a guy who is a wizard when it comes to building cars. His latest creation looks like an Indy car and features a Toyota V-12 engine that Don built by mating two Toyota 6-cylinder motors together. (I won’t even try to describe how he did that!) With just a few miles on the car, Don drove it over to the recent MSRA inspection at the NAPA store in Eagan. Photos by the editor

THANK YOU TO OUR CLUB SPONSORS

We all know that it takes money to run our club and put on the big event called the “Summer Spectacular.” We

have been lucky through the years to have sponsors such as: Pepsi, Dick’s Hot Rod Shop, Apple Ford, and our

latest big sponsor, Lake Marion Collision. Recently, during the Lakeville Pan-O-Prog car cruise, Bruce Tschida &

crew from Lake Marion Collision put on a pig roast. Several Southern Cruzers were able to attend, and a good time

was had by all, except the pig didn’t look too happy! Another sponsor who has stepped up to the plate is the Farm-

ington Tap and Longbranch Saloon owned by Kenny & Alicia LeBeau. I had a chance, along with Tim Hanna &

Jerry Forness to visit with Kenny & Alicia LeBeau at their recently refurbished bar & grille in Farmington. They told

us of ideas they have to help the club out at our events. The one that caught our eye was of having a root beer

float stand. Kenny & Alicia would provide the root beer & ice cream, and the club would provide the workers to run

the stand. I think this will be a popular spot! Photos by Jerry Forness & the editor

BURNSVILLE AUGUSTANA HOME FAMILY DAY - Wednesday, July 24

The Southern Cruzers were invited to spend an afternoon at the Augustana home, and it turned out to be a fine

one! Fifteen cars were counted on display. There was plenty of cool shade to ride our lawn chairs, and the good

folks at the center put on a fabulous meal for residents & guests. Many of the residents were able to view the cars

and look back in their memory to when many of these cars were new!
