The Hall of Fame was created to recognize and honor men and women who have partici-pated in the athletic events and programs of the Wisconsin Senor Olympics.

The Selection Committee will honor up to three seniors in 2013, who excelled as athletesor volunteers, and have made significant contributions to the success of the WisconsinSenior Olympics.

Those selected will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Celebration of AthletesDinner on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Nominations for the Hall of Fame may be submitted by anyone, including self-nomina-tion, for those who have participated in the Wisconsin Senior Olympics since its incep-tion in 1980.

Application forms may be obtained from our website, www.wiseniorolympics.com or bycalling Willie Mitchell (414) 647-6057.

ELIGIBILITY: Men and Women who willbe age 50 years and older as of Dec. 31, 2013.As the division is computer calculated basedon the birth date, all participants must providetheir birth date when registering for theWisconsin Senior Olympics. We are awarethat many participants are reluctant, due toprivacy concerns, to provide their birth date,however the National Senior GamesAssociation requires that we furnish a date ofbirth for all qualifiers for the National SeniorGames.

AGE GROUPS: Age groupings for eventsare in five year increments (eg. 50-54, 55-59etc.). Events will be conducted in these agegroups where there is sufficient participationor age groups may be combined. You mustcompete in your proper age division except indoubles and teams where you must competein the age group of the youngest participant.

SPECIFIC INFORMATION about eachevent can be found on pages 6-11 and in theschedule on page 5. Contact the EventCoordinator if you need additional informa-tion or for permission to register after thedeadline. Late registration is not available inmost sports. There is a limit of five (5) indi-vidual events in swimming, two (2) in tennis.

TEAM MEMBER: Team rosters must becompleted by team captain (page 16) and submitted for the team to compete.

FOR NATIONAL SENIOR GAMES:Wisconsin will accept out of state teams orindividuals, but they will not take away aqualifying spot from a state team or individ-ual.

The Wisconsin Senior Olympics is proud to honor Gene Johansen as the 2013Service Award Winner. Gene has been involved with the Wisconsin SeniorOlympics (WSO) for over 18 years . He began by competing in the 5k Road Raceand al l of the Cycl ing events . In 1997 he became one of the event coordinators forthe WSO cycl ing competi t ions. Gene has a lways found t ime to help make the WSOa bet ter organizat ion. He has dedicated many hours market ing the organizat ion bygoing to f i tness centers , cycle shops, and community organizat ions he fel t were noaware of the WSO.

Gene was born in Milwaukee and at tended Humboldt Elementary School and BayView High School . In high school he real ly loved gymnast ics and would havebeen on the wrest l ing team, but they discont inued the wrest l ing program his f resh-man year. After high school he served his country for over 3 years in the Army.While serving overseas he met the woman he would marry. He and his wife ,Babet te , have two chi ldren, four grandchi ldren, and two great-grandchi ldren.Gene is a re t i red bui lding maintenance worker having dedicated 37 years of hisl i fe to the South Milwaukee School Distr ic t . In his f ree t ime he enjoys f ishing,boat ing, cycl ing and bird watching. Gene s ta tes : “I have always had an interest inpredator birds . They are real ly interest ing to watch and s tudy.” He cont inued,“Actual ly I l ike al l animals . I take my neighbor ’s dog for a walk of ten.”

Mr. Johansen has been an act ive runner s ince 1968 and ran in marathons from1970-1990. He has a lso par t ic ipated in biathlons where he discovered he was abet ter cycl is t than a runner, so he began to focus more on cycl ing. In the mid-90’she began competing in the Wisconsin Senior Olympics enter ing al l cycl ing eventsand the 5k Road Race. When asked how he did, Gene commented, “I guess I didokay. I remember taking f i rs t in 1999 when I went down to Flor ida and competedin the Flor ida Senior Games. I have also taken 3rd and 5th at the Nat ional SeniorGames when they were held at Hampton Roads in Virginia .

Gene cont inues to t ra in year-round at tending Spin Classes two t imes a week at5:00am, but he also s tays very act ive volunteer ing his t ime for many organizat ionsand purposes . He belongs to a local f ishing club and assis ts with the coordinat ionof their different events and he is in charge of the Service Department for the bigWheel & Sprocket Bike Expo held each year a t State Fair Park. He has been anact ive volunteer for WSO. As mentioned, he has been the cycl ing event co-coordi-nator s ince 1997. Gene was one of the or iginal members of the Mil ler ParkConcession s tand crew volunteer ing his t ime at near ly every game WSO wasscheduled for. “Even though i t was hard work I real ly enjoyed volunteer ing atMil ler Park; I usual ly did the cooking on the gr i l l . We had a lot of fun running theconcession s tands, watching the fans, and get t ing a chance to meet new people .”

Power Walk at

Senior CelebrationFriday, August 30, 2013

The Wisconsin Senior Olympics will provide a power walk/fun walk event at Milwaukee

County Zoo Senior Celebration. The power walk/fun walk event is sponsored by the

Milwaukee County Department on Aging to promote the health and wellness for older

adults. Anyone over the age of 50 is encouraged to pre-register for the event. The sen-

ior celebration visitors over the age of 55 will receive free admission from 9 am to 5 pm.

While you are at the Milwaukee County Zoo you can see the animals, listen to live

music, learn helpful tips about health and wellness, play games and snack on goodies.

Wisconsin Senior Olympics, Inc. (WSO) is the organization recognized by the National Senior GamesAssociation (NSGA) to host Senior Olympics National Qualifying Games in the state of Wisconsin. Oneof the requirements for this recognition is the sharing, with NSGA, of the name, address, phone numbers,e-mail address and birth date of the athletes participating in the Wisconsin Senior Olympics.

WSO tries to protect the confidentiality of the athlete's street address, phone numbers and date of birth.However, WSO cannot guarantee that in all cases it will be able to protect the confidentiality of informa-tion.

WSO may make the names and addresses of its athletes available to sponsors and advertisers upon theirrequest.

WSO reserves the right to use any photographs or video media, from any WSO sponsored event, in dis-plays or publications to promote WSO activities.

Collection of information on the Wisconsin Senior Olympics website: Each year WSO sponsors competi-tive sports events. The results of these events, name, age group, and other identifying information, arepublished on the WSO website.
