Mission Appeal Weekend 2020
August 29 – 30 Introductory Letter to Parishioners
T H E R O M A N C A T H O L I C
DIOCESE OF LAS CRUCES
Office of the Bishop
Diocese of Las Cruces 1280 Med Park Dr Las Cruces, NM 88005-3239 (575) 222-4252
Dear Father Alvarez: I look forward to being present once again at Epiphany parish on the weekend of August 29-30, 2020 for the Missionary Cooperative Program and am grateful for your welcome. I offer below some introductory information to your parishioners in case there is an opportunity to put a note in the bulletin or parish web site in anticipation of the weekend appeal. If so, I will be most grateful for whatever is possible.
The Diocese of Las Cruces, created in 1982, comprises the 10 southern counties of New Mexico, an area of 44,483 square miles, ten times the size of the Archdiocese of Miami, bordering the wall between the US and Mexico. The mission of the diocese is to serve its 102,000 Catholics, as well as the non-Catholic population within its boundaries. The diocese, which contains 46 parishes and nearly as many missions, ministers primarily to a mixture of Hispanics, Anglos and Native Americans. Due to its large geographic area spread across national forests, mountain ranges and deserts, and its location in one of the poorest states of the US, the diocese has very limited financial resources and has been designated a mission diocese. The Diocese suffers from a significant scarcity of priests to minister to the people of this vast area. Forty-eight priests pastor the 46 parishes and almost as many missions attached to the parishes. Priests assigned to ministry that were ordained for the Diocese of Las Cruces or later incardinated in the Diocese number only 17. The others are Religious and priests from India, Africa and South America who serve faithfully but only for a time. I deeply appreciate the generosity of the people of Epiphany parish to assist me in this work. My diocese truly needs the witness of men called forth from among the families of the parishes who commit their lives to serve as missionaries in this vast region of New Mexico. Your gifts make it possible to educate them to be the priests of Las Cruces and to live out their lives committed to joyfully bringing Jesus to His people. Be assured your gifts will bear much fruit for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Be assured of my prayers. Please pray for me.
Be assured of my prayers. Please pray for me. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Peter Baldacchino Bishop of Las Cruces

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE
All of us have known people who are holy . . . priests, sisters, parents, relatives and friends. The reason we knew they were holy is because they were always praying regardless of problems, doubts or fears which entered their life. As a result, they accepted the will of God in all things, and remained happy and peaceful. Praying is simply talking to God . . . sharing with Him our inner thoughts, wishes, favors and problems. Every human being is called to be holy, and it all starts with praying. Besides going to Mass on Sunday, do we pray during the day, do we recite the Rosary, do we teach our children to pray, do we pray together as a family? Do we live our faith at work, at play and at everything we do? Are we truly men and women of prayer who accept God’s will in all things? A perfect example of a holy and prayerful life is Mary, the Mother of God. As a Jewish teenager, she said “Yes” to the Lord. Her faith and total acceptance of God’s will changed the course of history. Mary was not a passive spectator. She participated in her Son’s life and stood by the cross as He died. God wants all of us to be holy. Some people think you need to recite the Hail Mary, Our Father, Act of Contrition, or read from a prayer book to really pray. This is not true at all. Even though these are beautiful prayers, just talking to God as you would to your father and mother is the best prayer in reaching the Lord. You have God’s ear when you talk to Him, and He will answer your prayers. God can hear your prayer from anywhere you are. A priest once asked a little boy in catechism class, “What do you think a Saint is?” The child thought for awhile and then he remembered the saint figures in the stained glass windows at church. “Father,” he said, “a Saint is someone the light shines through”. . . He was so right. Talk with God through prayer and you will . . . LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE.
