I was in a Diocesan Charismatic Congress here in Phoenix when an elderly gentleman came

to me enriching my ministry with his spiritual testimony, he said, “Father, I'm getting blind,

but let me tell you, I can see clearer now". That person really discovered and made me see

that the joy of his life consisted in to learn to see the presence of God in his heart through the

power of love. I think these 69 years of parish life surrounds us all, not just for the years of

membership, but for the grace of God in the time lived.

Over time, the parish has embraced people, projects and challenges; the same as a fine wine it

leaves memories of hard work and ferments a sense of bright happiness, which is nothing but

God's blessing.

It has been a history of Eucharist, which is the Lord’s presence and communion with Him,

full of memories and gratitude, the moment where the divine and the human become one.

In fact, this parish is not the same as it was in the beginning, as nothing in life is, everything

changes, except God. Memory of the past does not have value if they do not have the

condition of renewal and new beginnings. The experience of these years, 69 years for some,

40 for others, 20 for others, etc .. tells us that the Lord has been present along the way, and

that the value of having a baptized community and the mission to continue baptizing the

human side, awakens our consciousness of the communion with Christ, which is the real

condition of true happiness and joy of being a member of this parish family.

Certainly we now see clearer than before, because we have matured in God's time, we have

learned from our mistakes and our own humanity, and we have strengthened our personal,

communal, and ecclesial faith, which makes us say: God lives and is His spirit is with us.

Let’s thank the past, live and celebrate the present and trust our future. That our Patron

St. Gregory may continue illuminating the path of holiness to see our parish as the place that

teaches us to experience life in the beauty of God.

Happy 69th anniversary with this special edition and of course we are preparing already for

our 70th. Hallelujah!

En un Congreso carismático diocesano en Phoenix, en el contexto de un dialogo pastoral, una

persona mayor enriqueció mi ministerio al darme testimonio de su espiritualidad diciendo:

‘Padre, me estoy quedando ciego, pero sepa Usted que ahora veo mejor”. Esa persona

realmente descubrió y me hizo ver que la alegría de su vida consistía en haber aprendido a ver

la presencia de Dios en su corazón a través de la fuerza del amor. Creo que estos 69 años de

vida parroquial nos envuelven a todos no por los anos de pertenencia y si por la gracia de

Dios en el tiempo vivido.

Con el transcurso del tiempo, la parroquia fue envolviendo personas, proyectos, desafíos, que

al igual que el vino, dejan hoy memorias impregnadas de sudor y fermento que generan

orgullo y brillo, que no es otra cosa que la bendición de Dios.

Ha sido una historia de eucaristía, que es presencia y comunión, memoria y acción de gracias,

el momento sublime donde se une lo divino y lo humano.

De hecho, con los años transcurridos, la parroquia no es igual a como inició como nada lo es,

pues todo cambia, menos Dios. No tiene valor el recuerdo del pasado sino es condición de

renovación y de nuevo comienzo. La enseñanza de estos largos años, 69 para algunos, 40 para

otros, 20 para otros, etc.. nos dice que el Señor está presente en los recodos del camino, y que

este valioso capital de una cultura bautizada y la misión de seguir bautizando lo humano, nos

invitan a volver a la conciencia de la comunión con Cristo, que es condición de la verdadera

felicidad y gozo de ser familia parroquial.

Con certeza que ahora vemos mejor que antes, pues hemos madurado en el tiempo de Dios,

hemos aprendido de nuestros errores y humanidad, y hemos fortalecido la fe personal,

comunitaria y eclesial, que nos hacen decir: Dios vive y su Espírito está con nosotros.

Agradezcamos el pasado, vivamos y celebremos el presente, confiemos el futuro. Que

nuestro Patrón San Gregorio nos siga iluminando el camino de la santidad al ver nuestra

Parroquia como el lugar que nos enseña a leer la vida en la belleza de Dios.

Felices 69 años con esta edición especial y desde ya nos preparamos para celebrar los 70.

LONG AGO BUT NOT SO FAR AWAY

In March 1947, St. Gregory the Great parish was born.

A young priest, Fr. Bernard L. Gordon, was appointed

pastor. The first mass celebrated by the new

parishioners took place on Palm Sunday at the

Arizona State Fairgrounds. Masses were celebrated

there and at Whitney-Murphy Funeral Home chapel

until a temporary church building (and cafeteria and

classroom) – a converted Army surplus barracks – was

moved onto five acres of recently purchased cotton

fields.

ÉRASE UNA VEZ, NO HACE MUCHO TIEMPO

La Parroquia de San Gregorio fue fundada en

marzo de 1947. Un joven sacerdote, el Padre

Bernard L. Gordon, fue nombrado pastor. La

primera misa celebrada por los nuevos

parroquianos fue el Domingo de Ramos en el

recinto ferial del estado de Arizona, después

las misas se celebraban en la capilla de la

funeraria Whitney-Murphy, que era un edificio

temporal. La cafetería y salón de clases, antes

era barricadas del ejército que luego se

trasladó a los cinco acres de campos de

algodón.

Plans were drawn up for an interim church building

and parish complex. The plans were modified only

slightly and became what is now our school, cafeteria,

rectory and Gordon Hall.

Se hicieron planes para una iglesia interina y

complejo parroquial. Se modificaron los planes

solo un poco y se convirtieron en lo que son

ahora nuestras escuela, cafetería, rectoría y el

salón parroquial llamado “Gordon Hall”

By 1955, it was obvious, the parish, which had started

with 200 families but had grown to over 1,000

families, needed a bigger church. And so the current

church of St. Gregory the Great parish came to be.

Obviamente la parroquia fue creciendo,

comenzó con 200 familias pero en 1955 ya

había crecido a más de 1.000, se necesitaba

una iglesia más grande y así originó la iglesia

que es hoy.

The cross hanging above the tabernacle is made from

wood imported from Sweden. The linden wood corpus

weighs 165 pounds and was carved in Switzerland.

La cruz que está colgada por encima del sagrario

es de madera importada de Suecia. El cuerpo de

tilo pesa 165 libras y fue esculpido en Suiza.

The wall behind the tabernacle is a mosaic composed

of tiny bits of gold and red and black Venetian glass.

This mosaic, as well as the mosaics behind the shrines,

was crafted in Milwaukee Wisconsin.

El muro de detrás del sagrario es un mosaico

compuesto de trocitos de vidrio veneciano de

oro, rojo y negro. Este mosaico, como los de

detrás de los santuarios, fue confeccionado en

Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The black marble of our altar, shrines and ambo

(where the word of God is proclaimed) came from

Tennessee. The main altar, in its original location

directly under the large crucifix, also consisted of

imported Italian marble.

El mármol negro de nuestro altar, el santuario y

en el ambón (donde se proclama la Palabra)

proviene de Tennessee. El Altar principal esta en

su lugar original debajo del crucifijo y también

esta hecho de Mármol importado de Italia.

Our stained glass windows, the smaller

ones of geometric design as well as the

large ones of various saints, were

designed and executed by Erhard

Stoettner of Bavaria.
