Reflection: Write a narrative addressing what education has done in your life in regards to knowledge gain, planning your futures and/or your character development .

Objective: Students will review the components used to set an effective goal and complete a SMART Goals worksheet outlining their career and intermediate goal along with an action plan.

Bell Work: List 5-7 goals that you would like to reach over a period of time. Be specific on your goals, ex. To find a job vs. To become a pharmaceutical engineer and work to develop drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease.

SMART Goal SettingFollowing are components of an effective goal – one that describes performance standards that will “tell us what good behavior looks like.” The SMART acronym can help us remember these components.

Specific: The goal should identify a specific action or event that

will take place.

Measurable: The goal and its benefits should be quantifiable.

Achievable: The goal should be attainable given available resources.

Realistic: The goal should require you to stretch some, but allow the likelihood of success.

Timely: The goal should state the time period in which it will be accomplished

Read the following quote and describe in 3-5 sentences what this quote means to you.

Allow students to share their responses.

After the students have shared their definition, provide the following dictionary.com definition of honesty:

1. the quality or fact of being honest; uprightness and fairness. 2. truthfulness, sincerity, or frankness. 3. freedom from deceit or fraud.

 

Class work:Show the following video clip the Pass It On “Honesty” commercial.  This commercial was created to promote honesty. It shows a teen who makes an extra effort to return a woman’s purse after she left it at a bus stop.

Discuss the commercial with your class. You may want to ask them if they had ever been in a similar situation. Be sure to address the following questions:

Has anyone ever returned something of yours that you thought was lost or stolen forever? How did you feel? Have you returned something to someone else? How did that person feel? How did it make you feel knowing that you did the right thing?

How are the quote and the commercial related? In your own words, describe the word “honesty”. What are some reasons that a person may choose to

not be honest? Why is being honest important? Who does a lack of honesty affect?

Have the students answer and discuss the video clip: Summarize the video. What was the situation? Why did Javier refuse the boss’s request? What

do you think he meant by mentioning his family and his God?

What did Javier think was going to happen when he refused the boss’s proposition?

What actually happened? How many people before Javier failed to do the

right thing? Are you surprised? Why or why not?

Describe a time that you chose to be honest and it worked out for the best.

2. Reflect on the quote. Write 3-5 sentences addressing in response to the following question: Even though it may not always be easy to be honest, why is it considered the “best policy”?

Objective: Students will be able to recognize situations in real-life where their honesty could be tested and how these decisions affect others.

Bell work: Have students answer the following questions: What would you do if someone stole your

grandmother’s purse while she was grocery shopping?

How would you feel if your mom was fired from her job because her cash register came up short?

What would you do if you let your sister borrow your new cellphone and someone stole it from her?

Allow students to share their responses. After the students have shared their responses, ask them the following questions: If they would feel as strongly if it were a

stranger who had gotten their purse or cellphone stolen? Why or why not?

Point out to the students that every person is someone’s daughter, son, brother, sister, mom, dad, or grandparent. If we would not want those things to happen to our loved ones, why would we want to do the same thing to someone else?

the bakery?

4. Have the students answer and discuss the video clip:What could happen to that employee if the customer had not returned the money?What would you have done if you were the customer that received too much change?

Reflection: 1. Write 3-5 sentences in response to the following question: When faced with the decision of being honest and/or doing the right thing, how could asking yourself the question “what if this were my mom, grandma, sister, or brother?” help you make a better decision?
