AUGUST 2019 NEWSLETTER Messages from the committee At CAER URFA SOUTH SHIELDS U3A we have an agreement with neighbouring U3As for selling any unsold spaces on trips organised by a U3A. The procedure is: the person organising the event would contact our business Secretary who would put them in touch with the person in our U3A who organises similar events to ensure there is no clash and that person would help sell the places on a first come first served basis. For anyone who is organising an event for an organisation outside of the U3A with spaces they want to offer in CAER URFA U3A they should first ask the U3A member who organises similar events if there are any objections. If there are no objections the spare places should be offered to all the membership, either in the newsletter or from the stage on the basis of first come first served; emphasising it is not a U3A event and it is not covered by U3A third party insurance. Charities chosen to benefit this year are:- Hospitality and Hope. This is a local charity who offer support and sustenance with a little TLC to local people who have fallen on hard times. Or who need a shoulder to lean on for a while. They organise two or three meals each week at their centre in Hampden Street. They also organise a food bank, a clothes bank, wellbeing sessions, and that lovely little coffee shop next to the Chichester Metro. The Chai Coffee House. All of its profits go back into the project. Northumbria Blood Bikes; This is a registered charity established by local volunteers to deliver essential blood and urgent medical supplies, out of hours, between hospitals and other healthcare sites in North East England. They cover Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Darlington. Prospective New Groups Are you interested in Archery? Have you ever wished to learn how to fire an arrow? Please register your interest with either of the activity co-ordinators, Edna Brabon or Lian Johnstone so that they can assess interest and see if we can arrange such a group? To date five persons have advised of their interest, is there anyone else? Discussion Group – If interested please see Cheryl, topics will be agreed so everyone has their input and opportunity to participate in a full open discussion. SCAM AWARENESS Just received a message (26th July) to say that a lady I know had received a call saying there was a suspicious £600 entry on her Visa account. If you get one of these calls, BE VERY CAREFUL it could be a scam! You can always call the number on the back of your debit or credit card to check everything is okay on your account. Please use a different phone to the one on which you received the call! The scammer can hang on the line for up to five minutes after you have hung up. The Visa card company confirmed there had been a spate of these calls over the past few days. Please be careful! Two little boys were at a wedding when one of them leaned over to the other and asked, “How many wives can a man have?” His friend answered, “Sixteen…..four better, four worse, four richer and four poorer.”
