Emvelo Quality and Environmental Consultancy (PTY) Ltd is a level 1 BBBEE complying company which is 100% black women owned. It is based in Richards Bay, kwaZulu-Natal. It was established with the aim of providing environmental consulting services and solutions to various organizations prior to the commencements of developments. we also provide guidance and advice to our clients to ensure that they comply with relevant environmental legislations and standards like Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015).

Our target clients include (But are not limited to.) the construction industry, the industrial sector, the mining sector, the agricultural sector and private developers.

When I worked with different industries, I learnt about different ways in which the environment is effected by the human activities that enable

commerce and industry to take place and my experiences with the Department of Water and Sanitation taught me about the importance of enforcing environmental legislation to save the environment from different forms of pollution. I was also inspired by the rapid growth of industrial and commercial developments in SA and the need for more environmental solutions to the problems these developments create. These observations helped me to identify a gap in the market for environmental specialists that would be capable of protecting our natural environment. The environmental degradation due to construction, mining, agriculture and other human activities needs committed and responsible environmentalists to assist in the promotion of sustainable development.     After completing my BSc Honours in Environmental Management, I felt that I needed to contribute in this industry and to make a change.

I  started the business in 2015. Emvelo has been involved in a number of environmental and quality control projects around South Africa. Some of these have been successfully completed within the past 4 years. Our services include (But are not limited to) Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs),   Water Use License Applications (WULAs), Waste Licenses, Environmental Control Officer (ECOs) duties  and Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015).

A  new business has limited ways to convince banks to fund their capital requirements, especially as a service

organisation. Because we did not have any fixed

assets to use as security, this is a challenge. Government programmes also focus on funding firms that provide goods.

There are no programmes that target service industries. We nevertheless need to remain in operation and in order to do so we need to cover our expenses such as salaries, office space, office equipment, telephone expenses, internet usage,

travel expenses and other professional costs to ensure

we comply with government regulations. These professional costs including SARS requirements, and labour law demands to name a few.

Not having funding from the banks or the government, I was

forced to fund these expenses using my savings as an investment.

Like other small businesses, cash flow is a big challenge due to the delayed settlement of invoices.

To overcome these challenges I obtained business management skills through joining Enterprise Development Institutes like Black Umbrellas and SEDA. Having attended some of the business management training sessions available through these institutes I really accelerated my business to the next level. We have always ensured that we deliver the best services to our Clients and this has really made our company remarkable and made us more attractive to new customers. The increased demand for our services has increased our cashflow and this has enabled us to obtain the resources that we need.

We have gone to great lengths to educate our clients and the community about being environmentally responsible. We have also worked with them to find ways to incorporate environmentally friendly lifestyle choices into their day to day operations, instead of approaching environmental laws as once off (or occasional) events for compliance purposes. We are also expanding these efforts to enhance waste management approaches by introducing recycling projects in the different communities. We believe educating our clients is just as important as helping them comply with the laws. One of our goals is to teach the community and the respective company about the importance of greening the buildings to reduce the carbon footprint. I have started doing some courses with Green Building SA to obtain more knowledge in greening buildings. In addition to this I have also looked for opportunities for these initiatives to be certified. We have been presented with opportunities to expand  our services to other provinces such as Mpumalanga, North West and Gauteng. Our goals are to ensure that we are great ambassadors of a KZN founded company. Having a great reputation in other provinces, will not only be good for our growth but will be great for the image of KZN as well.

What I love about my job is that I am part of the solution to the serious challenges of climate change and global warming. Through one of our services, which is undertaking Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), we are able to identify the environmental impacts of various projects at an early stage and the mitigation measures are then provided early to ensure that the environment is protected during these developments. When we undertake projects, we are privileged to having been exposed to different projects. This has allowed us to apply our skills and use different synergies to tackle different challenges that come with the project at hand.       In our projects, I get to interact with people from all walks of life and a variety of different cultures. These include high ranking government officials, senior managers, directors of companies, construction workers, communities who are affected by these projects and their representatives such as councillors and chiefs. Through working with people in different expertise, designations and cultures, I have learnt to adapt to all sorts of situations and to rise above every challenge.

I’m Zamashenge Buthelezi (20) from Empangeni (Esikhawini). I’m a self-taught makeup artist based in PMB and Empangeni. I do makeup for weddings, photoshoots, matric dances, birthday parties or any special occasion.

I also sell virgin human hair and provide hair services like Weave treatments, hair dye and wig construction.

I started my business this year after being encouraged by my sister and my friends to start it. Positive feedback that I received from Social media about my makeup also encouraged me to start my business.

My passion and love for makeup made me to start this business. I do makeup not because it’s rewarding but it’s such an art form that I’ve dreamt about since I was a young girl. My goal is to own a salon that will specialize in makeup and hair. I’m currently planning to host Beginners Makeup masterclasses, because I’ve received requests from many people who need makeup lessons.

My advice to the young generation is that everything is possible, If you want to be successful even at the young age you need to stay true to who you are and what you want to achieve. Regardless of the field you are in, have a purpose as to why you do what you are doing.

SANELE kHUMALOwhO IS ShE?Sanele Khumalo is King Cetshwayo District's youngest media and broadcasting mogul in the making. She is better known as 'TheRealuSanele' and is 16 years of age, turning 17 on the 6th of

August this year. Sanele is a radio presenter at UYFM (Uthungulu

a youth show there. This currently marks her as being 2

years in the media industry yet still in high school.

guest presenter on a sister talk show called "Girls Sessions". She is evidently very talented and versatile, which she knows is vital for her career in media and journalism. In addition to everything, Sanele is the winner of Miss Plus Size 2018, a motivational speaker and a body positivity activist. She diligently dedicates herself to her studies, but with her big personality, many doors are already open to her.

She has been an MC at hip hop shows, like the Blu Art Show and has interviewed a number of people through her work. She's a hard worker, a strong young woman and innovative. She is no ordinary teenager! The media mogul in the making knows who she is and knows exactly where she's from, this is how she is able to focus precisely on where she is going. With only a few people around her, she has kept her circle small enough to be able to do the things that only move her forward towards her destiny.

Platinum Glow SA is an all in one beauty lounge with a dedicated kids Only salon based in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg. It was founded by Sibusisiwe kraai who is from a training and development background and this is why she started the business. kraai explains how she experienced several difficulties in several salons because of the nature of her natural hair and scalp sensitivity. Sibusisiwe recalls as a young mother, the difficulty she had when trying to get her daughter to a hair salon as her daughter dreaded a visit to the salon that was not conducive to kids.

She says growing up she has always had an unpleasant experience of pain due to a chemical reaction that occurred between the products used on her hair and her scalp and ended up resorting

to weaves. This was not however a direct solution to the problem.

“I have very coarse, coiled hair which tangles and turns into locks if not plaited, however I dreaded plaiting because it was terribly painful. I suffered from severe scalp burns when relaxing hair and in other cases my scalp became irritable and flaky from chemicals in the shampoo that I used.

Being a consultant who travelled a lot also meant that she did not have the time to attend to her own beauty requirements, which included nails, waxing and facials. She could only spare time for one service a month and she dreamed of a place where she can go to once venue and have all her beauty requirements attended to. Whilst looking at the need for such a venue, she got the realised that other ladies could be experiencing the same challenges she faced and this inspired Platinum Glow SA.

We have selecting more information on Platinum Glow Kids in particular, what is the concept around the business.

This is what Sibusisiwe Kraai explains: “From temper tantrums to agitated stylists, getting a hairstyle is not always a great experience for a kid. I realized this in the early 2000s, when I was hoping to find a salon that did things differently for myself and my daughter. Instead, I discovered a business opportunity. Now, as founder and owner of Platinum Glow Kids , I have created a salon that not only caters to children, but blends entertainment with grooming, in order to accommodate my young, restless clients.”

BIZ DISCUSSIONS: In a nutshell, what service does your business provide?Sibusisiwe: Platinum Glow Kids is an innovative child-focused salon and entertainment concept that is turning an often unpleasant traditional hair cutting or plaiting into a fun-filled, animated adventure. The child salon provides friendly and knowledgeable staff, animated gadgets, educational computer games and a character-filled entertaining environment geared to creating an enjoyable hairstyling experience.

BIZ DISCUSSIONS: How long have you been in business?Sibusisiwe: Platinum Glow Kids recently celebrated its 5th anniversary and plans to be the market leader in the children’s sector of the hair care industry delivering top-quality hairstyles and haircuts in a safe, clean and friendly environment.

BIZ DISCUSSIONS: Did you start with a formal business plan? If not, how did you lay the groundwork for your business?Sibusisiwe: Back in 2007, I sought a hair salon that catered to my 3 year old daughter. Instead of simply looking for the next best hair salon to go to, I discovered a business opportunity and started doing her hair at home with my sister, Zama Kraai, who currently runs Liemagination Square Beauty Salon . At each salon I visited, the stylist didn’t want to deal with my wiggling, squirming child and nephews. The cleanliness standards were suboptimal, and there was no originality in the design that would actually grasp my kids’ attention. I did not write a business plan for the salon. I focused on learning about the important factors for such a business including kids, parents, hair, demographics, and how to raise money to form a successful business.

One thing I did know was that that there had to be a better way to do kids’ hair and create a captivating salon experience, rather than one that’s filled with tears. Before launching my Platinum Glow Kids salon in mid-February 2019 , I knew I wanted to create a brand that would be synonymous with quality children’s hair care, all surrounded within a welcoming and entertaining environment. Everything about Platinum Glow Kids would be proprietary and wholesome: the Platinum Glow Kids characters, the games and stories, the books, at the end of a visit and an all-natural line of hair care products specially formulated just for kids.

BIZ DISCUSSIONS: How did you finance your endeavours, both initially and as your business grew?Sibusisiwe: Initially, I raised R700 000 as a business loan from a credible bank at a very reasonable interest rate because of the long standing business relationship my other businesses have with them with a timeline of paying back the funds in 36 months.

BIZ DISCUSSIONS: Is your business today what you originally envisioned at the outset or has it changed significantly in the past few months?Sibusisiwe: The business is even better than what I envisioned! Since its founding days, the brand continues to be synonymous with my mission. We offer quality children’s hair care and an environment that celebrates kids. However there are challenges and areas for improvement that one needs to continuously attend to as a new business. Our clients play a big role in shaping and improving the business model. We take all comments and complaints seriously and learn from each experience on how we can do better the next day. Platinum Glow Kids has revolutionized the children’s hair care industry in KZN by making hairstyling and haircuts fun for kids, relaxing for parents and rewarding for stylists.

BIZ DISCUSSIONS: what are some lessons you’ve learned? Is there anything you would’ve done differently?Sibusisiwe: Everything along the way was a lesson. I had no prior experience in salon business or the hair care industry, so everything was new at every stage of growth. I learned the importance of launching a start-up quickly rather than waiting to perfect the business model. Nothing is ever going to be perfect when launching a new business but it is important to get out there and do what you’ve

set out to achieve as opposed to sitting around and waiting for every small detail to fall into place. I also learned the value of a business coach by contracting the services of Zoh P Mashabane of Rationalize . Her extensive experience in the business world has been extremely valuable and to date, she is one of the key players to thank for taking Platinum Glow Kids to new heights. Overall I don’t know that I would have done anything differently, but I think all the successes and failures along the way made me a better entrepreneur.

BIZ DISCUSSIONS: what were the most important factors that contributed to your success?Sibusisiwe: The most important factors that led to Platinum Glow Kids ‘ success was its well-executed and innovative concept, the demand for quality kids-focused hair care services and its compelling economic model.

BIZ DISCUSSIONS: what are the next steps you want to take as a business owner? How do you see yourself achieving those goals?Sibusisiwe: Personally, I am going to launch other branches in the KZN province and ultimately in other provinces. Although I wouldn’t have done anything differently with Platinum Glow Kids , I have learned a lot over the past few months since I started Platinum Glow Kids . It seems logical that I would put my experience and knowledge to work in expanding the business.

BIZ DISCUSSIONS: what is your best advice to someone with a great business idea who is ready to give it a shot?Sibusisiwe: Just go for it. You’ll never have all the answers, so don’t wait for it to be perfect. Also, make sure you understand the financials, economics and that you have enough capital to weather a few storms along the way.

USIBA BUSINESS cONSULTINGyOUR cONTINUED GROWTH, OUR cOMMITMENT

Usiba Business Consulting is an accounting firm based in Richmond that is managed by Simbongile Mbalekwa. She is a Professional Accountant (SA) and a registered Tax Practitioner. As a consulting practice we offer secretarial and accounting services as detailed in the Companies Act. we also offer taxation services as required by the Income Tax Act, VAT Act and Taxation Administration Act, independent reviews and auditing services. Other services include holding seminars, workshops and master classes in Richmond and Pietemaritzburg, which are aimed at educating business owners about accounting, tax and the importance of compliance as required by various Acts and governing businesses.

The business was registered in 2015 but only started its operations last year in 2018. The birth of Usiba Business Consulting is one that I will treasure forever. It all began at a rooftop restaurant (In Pretoria around September 2017.) when my friends and I discussed the topic of starting a consultancy in detail and actually conceptualized my dream. This

gave it a shape and a name. I will forever be grateful to those ladies for their contributions and for being the foundation of Usiba Business Consulting. Since it Women’s Month, I feel it is only fitting that I appreciate and thank them.

When one thinks about a business or goes into business, one believes that it is simply a sell and buy transaction but there are many other things to consider before you even get to the stage of offering services to the public. We had to set up an office and furnish it which came with a lot of overheads and that’s just some of the things required before you even begin to sell. It took a lot of financial adjustments to meet those overheads. Another issue dealing with small businesses, is that they often do not have the money to pay immediately upon the rendering of a service. In certain instances, clients come with expired tax clearances and they need them renewed for tenders that are closing the following day. From this, you can see that it takes a lot of patience and sacrifice just to meet the day to day running costs of the business.

The other obstacle I faced which I am still working on, is the emotional health necessary for running a business. The first few years have been such a rollercoaster and I tend to be very hard on myself. I don’t forgive myself easily so failing a client or employees takes something from my soul and I shut down. I am slowly learning to give myself a break and reward myself for little milestones I have acheived to give me that extra push. Many small businesses tend to think owning a company simply means having a registration certificate or CK and doing tax returns. It is always a challenge educating people about the Companies Act but this has to be done because companies are incorporated based on this Act. Companies therefore need to ensure that they comply with the laws and regulations as stipulated in the Act , including various Tax Acts as it is a requirement for every company to be a registered taxpayer.

The biggest goal is to be an accredited training office for future accountants. There are many accounting graduates who are sitting at home, that will benefit from this training, especially in the Richmond area. Earlier this year, we moved into newer and bigger premises which we are currently renovating to meet the requirements necessary to get accreditation from both the SETA and other the professional bodies. We would appreciate any sort of sponsorship to make this dream come true. Another goal is to educate small businesses about what it means to have the registration certificate or CK along with the importance of administration, record keeping, and compliance with the Acts in order to make sound decisions in line with building sustainable businesses.

I love that I sell solutions to my clients. Enforcing growth and sustainability through compliance, effective financial management and good governance in all our stakeholders is a passion of ours.

Usiba is a feather and there is a saying “Birds of a feather flock together” so we love being part of any company that wants growth and sustainability hence our slogan says. ”Your continued growth is our commitment”.

Once we finish tertiary education, for many of us, that is where real life problems start. The pressure of finding that dream job and earning a salary has just begun. Once we find that job there is often an obligation to support the family that sent you to school and university or whatever the case might be. For others its the dream of owning your own house and driving your own car that’s important. This goes to shows that as human beings, our financial priorities are as individual as our different situations.

More often than not, we get consumed by the fact that we are earning a steady income and start to have this ideology that we can have whatever it is that we want, even if it is not a necessity, just because we can afford that lifestyle. This sometimes makes me wonder whether this could be the beginning of our downfall but, that is a topic for another day. While others are enjoying the benefits of earning a steady salary some are struggling to even get an internship or in-service training. What is interesting though, is that, you can convince that person to set up a table and sell apples and bananas on the streets and they would make a One Thousand rand (R1000) a week but they will not take your advice and rather choose to look for an in-service training that will give them Two Thousand Five Hundred rands (R2500) a month. This is just a highlight of some challenges of life after “school”.

What we don’t realise is that the life of earning a salary comes with its responsibilities. Lack of financial planning could turn the tables up-side-down for anyone at any given time. If you earn a salary of R2000.00 for example, you could suddenly have debts totalling to R4000.00 a month or you could be earning R20,000.00 and have debts of R30,000.00 to R40,000.00. This simply means that the more you earn, the more responsibilities you will have and sometimes there is no way of running away from those responsibilities. Having a second income is a way out

in this regard. This is not an excuse to be financially irresponsible.

What is a second income and what are its benefits? Any additional monies to your primary income (salary) is a second income. A second income does not mean that you must take a second fulltime job or work day and night. If you can use your spare time wisely and think of a business idea, buying and selling for instance, whatever profit you receive will be your second income. Having a second income simply means that:

    • Your budget does not have to be as tight as it is when you only have one income.

    • You have an opportunity to save more money.

    • Reduces chances of getting into debt.

    • You can pay off your debts faster

    • New skills acquisition

    • Freedom and security

Getting a second income is often not an easy process. Our different personality traits can sometimes limit us into exploring different ways in which we can generate income for ourselves. For instance, I have always seen myself as an introverted, shy person, not the easiest person to talk to or make conversation with and I never ever imagined myself approaching and selling products to people I do not know. Selling the Inuka fragrances products has taken me out of my comfort zone. I have learned to think out of the box in order for my products to sell and make a profit. While I am helping myself to earn a second income, I am also helping three other people to earn their primary income by helping me sell the products. This is one of the reasons we say getting a second income can make you acquire new skills. It can be done. Inflation is nobody’s friend, we all need a second income.
