More than 200 people of all ages, full of energy and compan- ionship, participated in the village’s first-ever Pink Divas & Gents Walk/Run to support breast cancer research and awareness – and by all accounts the June 30 event was a success at every turn. Village Clerk Janel Moreland, who created and managed the walk/ run, said an impressive number of individuals and businesses gener- ously donated to and sponsored the event, which allowed the vil- lage to donate $2,000 that was presented to the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force, who also shared educational information with the walkers. Cook County Hosts Community Conversation

Mayor Andre F. Harvey, the pastors’ long-time friend, celebrated the occasion and shared words of encouragement and fellowshipped.

“I am really thankful and humbled by every person who walked or ran as a ‘Pink Diva’ or ‘Gent’ because the event was so meaningful to so many people in Bellwood and outside of our community,” said Clerk Moreland. “It truly was a labor of love and I appreciate the hard work and time shared by our volunteers, village employees, my family and others. We worked together in the name of bringing awareness to breast cancer, which has sadly affected so many lives of many of our family members, friends and neighbors and has personally affected my family.” Participating vendors were: Costco, which distributed snacks and water before and after the walk; Firehouse Subs, who shared sandwiches and ice cream after the walk; Sinai Health Systems, provider of health screenings; Pan American Bank and SWIO (Sisters Working It Out) who conducted outreach, patient education and navigation programs. The “Biggest Team” award went to Bellwood Trustee Jophelia Boston, who is a cancer survivor. The “Most Money Pledged” award went to Bettye Conner of Pan American Bank.

Are you energy bills too high? Is your home cold in the winter and warm in

the summer? Then apply for CEDA weatheriza-tion on Sept. 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Eisenhower Community Center, 700 Speechley Blvd. in Hillside.

CEDA Weatherization uses state-of-the-art technology to make your home safer and more energy efficient. The program is available for single-family homes and multi-family buildings. Weatherization is performed free of charge for income-qualifying single-family households. Multi-family buildings require a contribution from landlords. For more information, call (800) 571-2332.

Proviso West High School alumni, Bellwood native and Philadelphia 76ers star Rob Covington made sure local youth know he values his hometown during his annual “Allergic To Fail-ure” free basketball camp on July 26-28 for more than 125 boys and girls in the community.

Youth Gain From Local Basketball Star’s Return

The popular camp, which experienced an increase in participants, included such new features as all-star and championship games for the NBA Division (ages 14-18) and the NCAA Division (ages 11-13). Participants received T-shirts, meals and other prizes. Among the proud supporters were Bellwood Mayor Andre F. Harvey, a fellow Proviso West alumni; and Dennis and Teresa Bryant, Covington’s parents, camp organizers and Bellwood residents.
