2017 FAITH CAMP!

It has been many years since I was a student. But this time of year always brings me back to that time in my life. August always gives me conflicting feelings, sad to see the summer end and excited about the possibilities and challenges of the new school year. Here at church, our life moves along according to the liturgical calendar but we still dance to the rhythms of the school year.
We have had a fine summer. We sent kids to Bible camp and the mountains of Colorado. Everyone came back safe and sound. We had the best Faith Camp in many years. It was a wonderful partnership of kids who wanted to come, parents who made arrangements to get them there, a well trained and well led staff, and a tremendous group of adult mentors who offered support and encouragement. But now it comes to a close. Our college kids leave home again and everyone goes back to school. School years end. Schooling ends. But learning, hopefully, never does. As we move through August and into the fall, once again we have a full slate of learning opportunities for young people and adults. Like everything else, our learning life at church is based upon adults who show up to teach and learn and parents who bring their children to the experiences that we offer. Church is always a partnership. And everything DOES rise and fall upon leadership, both paid and volunteer. I came into the summer hoping to announce the name of the person who will pick up the leadership of our Youth & Family Ministries but we’re not quite there. Right now I’m very grateful for Clayton Faulkner who has stepped up to organize and lead our Parish Education Team and to Charles Wilson who will be carrying our Youth & Family Team into September. I am also very much looking forward to another year of First Steps @ Faith. This will be our second year of slowly walking beside a small group of people as we experience together what mentorship and discipleship look like. I trust that we will have a small group ready to go and just the right sponsors to really help it work. Remember, First Steps @ Faith is open to anyone interested in learning more about the Bible, the church, and the faith in a slow, safe, interesting, and relational way. It is for those who desire to be baptized AND for those who have long been baptized but want to re-enter and re-member what that means for their lives. If you are interested in participating, please let Clayton or me know. Willingness is all it takes. August is also a time to reconnect with the other families who are walking in your shoes. We have a series of “Meet & Greet” times set aside this month to bring parents together. We want to share information with you, to re-introduce you to one another, and to gather some feedback about how we do what we do together to help families raise their children in a caring Christian environment. I look forward to spending that time with you. And finally, the feasibility study for our next capital campaign kicks off this month. Beth Bruce, our congregational president this year, writes about that in her column. All I can add to Beth’s thoughts is that I am very curious about what we will learn about ourselves through this effort. We are in the 500th anniversary year of the Reformation—if nothing else, let this remind us of the wisdom of Martin Luther, that the church is ALWAYS in a process of reformation. We are always learning. Always changing. Always adapting. Because this is what the Holy Spirit does among us. May you enjoy a blessed August, the end of summer, and the beginning of a new year of learning!

August Message Series Prayer is what we do, alone or in community, when we are consciously aware of God's presence. It is to our relation-ship with God what "communication" is in our re-lationship with other people. Because we are created in God's image, the communica-tion patterns that help in our human relationships ALSO help in our relationship with God. Using the helpful acro-nym, ACTS, we will explore in this message series what it means to come to God, and to one another, with prayers of adoration, confession, thanks-giving, and supplication.

What a summer we have had at Faith Lutheran Church! As I write this we are at the middle point of Faith Camp, and it has been amazing to watch our high school and early college kids come together to lead three weeks of amazing ministry to up to 90 kids each week. They have been supported by staff and adult volunteers who have been coordinated by the Youth and Family Ministry Team. The commitment and inspiration from all involved has been so impressive, and I believe everyone involved has been blessed to support such a long standing ministry of our church.
Your Church Council and Executive Board has been hard at work this summer, working on practicing our new governance model. We are more than halfway through the year, and our ministry teams are functioning well with the support of our church staff (all you have to do is look at the Youth and Family Team mentioned above). Even with the transition we had late this spring, with Jason Houlihan leaving us, Tessa Holmes and Charles Wilson have really stepped up to make sure all of the summer ministries were wonderful opportunities for our kids to learn and grow in their faith. We believe strongly that the new Governance Ministry Model works for our church and are finalizing the new governance documents required to transition to that model for 2018. Our plans are to finalize the Bylaws in August in order to share them with all of our members, to prepare for a late September Congregational Meeting to vote to adopt this governance model for the future. Last month, we voted to bring CCS (a fundraising firm) on board to do a feasibility study for a capital campaign next year. This will be kicking off in late August. As I said your Church Council/Executive Board team has been and will be busy directing the strategic direction for these efforts throughout the remainder of this year. We pray for this effort to truly engage ALL of our members in thinking about the long term sustainability of our church to provide ministries for many years to come, through direction on fund raising to retire our $900,000 of debt and do some major repairs to our building as well as supporting our outreach ministry partner CCSC in its capital campaign. Will look forward to feedback and support we receive by engaging the experts at CCS. Lastly, I would like to remind all of you that our ministries continue and actually with youth activities “peak” during the summer. It is important to make sure that gifts of support continue throughout the summer. It takes approximately $100,000 per month to support the payroll and budgeted commitments of Faith. Contributions have been significantly less than that for the months of June and July, and if each family ensures that support continues whether you are traveling, or at home, we can continue to provide stable liquidity for our church to operate. May God continue to bless the current and future ministries and efforts of our church to be a blessing in our corner and beyond!

Read Isaiah 55:6-13 & Psalm 104:1-18 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9)
Don’t you sometimes wonder what God is thinking, even under your breath? When tragedy strikes a community, when natural disaster wipes out whole villages, when people kill other people for no apparent reason, when the faces of malnourished children flash across the screen during the weeks of holiday cheer, or when death invades a family prematurely, don’t you wish you could fully know and understand the heart and mind of almighty God? That’s what Adam and Eve wished for, and look what
happened – sin was ushered into the world and has been here ever since, which is why there is pain, disease, suffering, sorrow, grief, loss, and people left scratching their heads wondering why. God is the Creator, and we are God’s creation. If we fully knew the heart and mind of God, there would be no need for faith-filled trust, for dependence on God’s presence during tough times, or even for grace. The Lord is always near; always to be found. As God found Adam and Eve wandering fearfully and perilously in the garden and clothed them with robes of forgiveness, God has found each of us in our own searching and fears and embraces us with grace. Pray: Thanks, Father, for clothing us with the security of your abundant love. Amen.

4 CCSC’s Sunshine Resale Shop & Vision Care Program
Continuing our series on the various programs and ways that the Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) serves people in Houston, the Louise J. Moran Vision Care Program provides vision screening and eyeglasses to children in need. Vision impairment affects children’s ability to learn and a significant percent of children do not receive comprehensive eye
exams before beginning school. Vision Care provides on-site school vision screenings by state-certified CCSC volunteers in collaboration with the school nurses. Those identified with possible vison impairment subsequently obtain professional exams and eyeglasses from the University of Houston’s University Eye Institute. During the 2016-2017 school year, CCSC performed vision screenings on 1,859 children across 16 schools—the highest number on record! Nearly 600 went on to the University Eye Institute for professional exams, and 533 received eyeglasses.
In addition to individual and corporate donations to CCSC, money made at the Sunshine Resale Shop supports CCSC’s programs, including Vision Care. The Sunshine Resale Shop has operated since 1988, and accepts donated furniture, housewares, clothing, and other items to sell at prices well below retail. In 2016, the Sunshine Resale Shop netted $34,369 in sales to contribute back to the CCSC’s outreach programs, which was 13% of CCSC’s total money raised. Please consider donating your items to the Sunshine Resale Shop next time you’re culling through your home and/or making estate plans. The shop is often looking for volunteers to staff it as well!

This August, our Mother’s Day Out Program will continue many of the traditions that make the program so special. The “babies,” as we call them on campus, will enjoy Splash Days with the wading pool, mini sprinkler and water tables-for those who only want to get their hands wet. We’ll recover from the three high energy weeks of Faith Camp, and we’ll prepare to welcome our new friends. The school year always starts on the day after Labor Day. Before that, though, we’ll invite new families to come to MDO for Getting to Know You Days. Each morning, new families will come to MDO for an informal play date in the Faith Center Gym. They may come for as many days or as few days as they want. The babies play while
teachers, administrative staff, and parents chat. Ms. Jill checks in with each family to make sure that they are aware of first day procedures and have completed all of the necessary paperwork. This allows the children to get familiar with the spaces and faces that they’ll see when they start the program. Often times, though, this is most helpful for the parents who are having a bit of trouble letting go. There are a few tears and many smiles as we watch families prepare for this important step. I often think back on my daughter’s first Getting to Know You day. She was 15 months old, and she just sat there like a blob in the middle of the floor. I smiled but was worried that she wasn’t ready for school. This is how many of the parents must feel as they watch nervously during this time. Getting to Know You Days are a great way to welcome new families and to help them adjust.
In August, we also spend time preparing our staff for the new school year through our Teacher Inservice time. We have 2 ½ days at the end of August when we attend trainings together and prepare the classrooms. This is a time when teachers from both programs get to know each other and learn from each other. We don’t have much time like this as we are often in two buildings, on two schedules and focusing on very active children. This is a time to slow down. This is a time to reinforce the idea that we are two schools with the same mission. This August, the teachers will experience workshops from outside presenters instead of just me. They’ll have two hours of training on Fine Motor Development and Sensory Experiences presented by an Occupational Therapist from Happy Hands. They’ll probably be terrified (but will learn a lot) from the Surviving an Active Shooter Situation presentation from HPD Sr. Community Liaison Stephen Daniel. We also have time to eat together and to just talk. These quiet times are important to building a strong team.

It’s not easy being broken. Walking around day to day with the feeling of an internal hole casts a shadow over you. The thought of looking into the mirror knowing that something is missing, and waiting anxiously for the rest of the world to point out your deformity, is heart wrenching. Sadly, we walk in our brokenness, terrified that the shadow of death will overtake our souls, leaving us as shattered shards of glass impossible to restore. Too often we allow our brokenness to separate us from the love of our Creator who wants nothing more than for us to live abundantly in the joy of our salvation. We hide, however, fearing that our imperfection in the sight of the one who is perfect will further cast us out. The lesson for us is that the Great Shepherd of the
sheep does not want to cast blotted lambs into the wilderness. Instead the shepherd yearns to bring us closer into the fold. God knows the struggles of life. God understands the pain of being lonely. God understands the heartache of a failed relationship. Most of all God understands the terror of feeling lost in the darkness of life. God, however, will take you into God’s arms and draw you close. God will restore your soul. God will send provisions for your daily needs. God will allow you to lie down and rest in pastures of peace. God will lead you to plenteous clear water to quench your thirst. God will make you whole again and guide you down the paths of truth. Even when it seems the shadow of destruction clouds your days and despair seems eminent, you will not fear. For God, the Creator of all, Lover of all and Sustainer of all will be with you always. God’s power and might will comfort you. God will treat you as an honored guest even when you are surrounded by those who despise you. God gives us this guarantee that grace, peace, and mercy shall be ours as long as we live in the light of God forever.

9 First Steps @ Faith FAQ by Dr. Clayton Faulkner, Director of Worship, Music, and Technology
First Steps @ Faith begins soon and here are the answers to some of
the most frequently asked questions:
WHO? First Steps @ Faith is designed for adults who want to deepen
their faith. We can imagine lots of different people that would be
interested in an intentional discipleship journey such as this. Our
first group of seven participants ranged in ages from 20s to 70s. It is
how we support those who would like to enter preparation for baptism. Some
members of our congregation might have spouses that attend worship occasionally
but have never been baptized or formally engaged the church. A parent or couple
might be interested in having their child baptized, but they feel like they need a
more solid foundation to their own faith before trying to teach their child about
believing in God. For many adults, engaging in Bible study and sharing their faith
experiences ended with confirmation when they were adolescents. Whether you
are baptized or not, First Steps @ Faith is for you.
WHAT? First Steps @ Faith is a process of study, mentorship, and prayer sort of like
confirmation for adults. The fancy church word that describes this is catechumenate
(an organized time of Christian formation and education). We call the participants
“candidates.” Each candidate is matched up with a sponsor. Each week you spend
time getting to know your sponsor and talking about what faith in God looks like in
your life.
WHEN? Come to our interest meeting on Sunday, August 13 at 12:00 PM in the
Faith Center Room 300. Lunch is available. Weekly meetings for First Steps @ Faith
take place on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM. Childcare is available.
WHY? Having faith and believing in God is not about having the right answers. First
Steps @ Faith is about building relationships. Having faith is a mysterious thing. If
you are filled with doubts and questions, this journey is for you. If you already know
a lot about God but are hungering for a deeper walk, this journey is also for you.
Whether you are baptized or not, this is a path we walk together in learning how to
follow Jesus.

He put before them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches. Matthew 13:31-32 Seeds are small and a mustard seed is the “smallest of all the seeds.” How strange it is that Jesus uses a tiny mustard seed in comparison to the
Kingdom of God. Is God also little? Usually we use words such as “great,” “almighty,” “all powerful,” “awesome,” and “majestic” to describe the character and power of God. However, Jean Vanier, a Catholic theologian, sees the littleness of God in the person of Jesus. Commenting on the stories of the Incarnation and Crucifixion, Vanier says, “Mary was not shocked by the weakness or littleness of God; the tears and the cry of the child Jesus; his needs, his hurts; his anguish and agony. Mary was at the cross standing close to Jesus stripped and vulnerable, in communion with her beloved son.” (Befriending the Stranger) In his writings, Vanier frequently uses words like “weak,” “little,” “humble,” and “vulnerable” to describe God and Jesus. Jean Vanier is very fond of the Gospel of John and published several books on John. In the fourth chapter of John, Jesus is tired and sitting by a well. He asks a Samaritan woman for water and also promises to give her the living water. Vanier’s description and interpretation of the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman is very moving and penetrating. He writes, “But the One who comes to give us new life is tired. He comes to us and asks us for help as a little one. It is a vulnerable God who comes as a beggar, asking us for help.” It is he, the Broken One, who will awaken us in love and give us new life. (Drawn into the Mystery of Jesus through the Gospel of John) The Bible says Jesus is the perfect image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15). The little Jesus, the beggar Jesus, the tired and thirsty Jesus, and the broken Jesus reveal to us the vulnerable, gentle, humble, and loving God. Why does Jean Vanier feel special connection to this little, weak, and humble Jesus? Is it because he sees this little Jesus in the faces of the weak and little people all around him all the time? Vanier is best known as the founder of the L’Arche, French for “the Ark,” which is a global network of communities where those with and without disabilities live side by side as equals. The network was started in northern France in 1964 when Vanier invited two intellectually disabled men to live with him as friends. The humble and little Jesus calls all of us to serve the little and the weak in society. We are also to recognize our own vulnerability, our own weakness, and our own need for mercy and compassion. That is the heart of Jean Vanier’s Christian faith. His faith in the little God is not passive but active, not pessimistic but hopeful, not weak but empowering. He writes, “We want a big God who fixes our problems. We don’t want a little God saying, ‘I need you and I’ll come and live in you. I’ll give you a new strength, a new spirit and you shall work so people become free and loving and peacemaking.’ We always want a God who is going to fix our problems, but God is saying, ‘I’ll give you the strength so you become one of those who work with others to bring peace to our world.’” (Encountering 'the Other') Desmond Tutu, another great Christian thinker and activist of our time, expresses similar thoughts. Tutu writes, “It is through weakness and vulnerability that most of us learn empathy and compassion and discover our soul.” (God Has a Dream) “Each of us has a capacity for great good and that is what makes God say it was well worth the risk to bring us into existence. Extraordinarily, God the omnipotent One depends on us, puny, fragile, vulnerable as we may be, to accomplish God’s purposes for good, for justice, for forgiveness and healing and wholeness. God has no one but us. St. Augustine of Hippo has said, ‘God without us will not as we without God cannot.’” (No Future without Forgiveness) The Kingdom of God is like a tiny mustard seed. To enter this Kingdom, we are to “do small things with great love” (Mother Teresa).
