Information from the President:

The summer is here and heating up. So are things at Agudath Achim. Last month I spoke of three

items on our agenda that need responses. Following are the answers to these three important

questions. Both the ritual committee and Board of Directors approved both provisions. First of all,

twice daily minyans will continue. Secondly, we are making a pronounced move to have lay leaders

lead the minyans as opposed to only the professional staff. To this effort, 14 congregants have

stepped forward so far and have been trained by our rabbi and executive director. At this point I

would be remiss if I didn't say we sure would like more volunteers. Thirdly, morning minyans have

been reduced by 15 minutes in length and Shabbat services have been shortened by 30 minutes in

length. Both are being done strictly with Jewish customs being properly observed.

Last month I also spoke of the need to better work with Congregation Mickve Israel in the

implementation of a more coordinated effort to lead the education process for our children enrolled

in Shalom School. The first board meeting since my induction showed positive trends towards

improving communication, planning, and curriculum. I also proudly announced my choices for our

synagogue's membership on the Shalom School board for 2016/2017. As president of the board,

Elise Shernoff, board members will be Janice Steirn PH.D, Suzanne Konter, Lynn Reeves, Linda

Zoller, and returning is Liz Arkin. All of those chosen are proven leaders in their fields. As I did for

our new board of directors, I have coordinated a retreat for Shalom School board members to be led

by Fran Kaminsky in August. I anticipate the same level of success as we had at our board retreat in

June.

The rabbi search committee is still interviewing the last remaining candidates for interim Rabbi.

Lynn and I have decided to pull the application from the rabbinical assembly for a permanent and/or

interim Rabbi search temporarily. We will be having focus groups letting our congregants help us

decide what we are looking for in our next permanent Rabbi. These focus groups will be done this

summer or early fall and we will change our application to meet our needs prior to resubmitting it in

late October. Fellow members, do not fear, we do have a plan in place in case we do not find a

Rabbi to meet our needs for the High Holidays and for 2016/2017. We do in fact have a professional

cantor contracted for the high holidays.

Rabbi Silberschein, as the sun rises for a new day, may it always hover over your head and may your

heart always be filled with good memories of your year at Congregation Agudath Achim. You

brought stabilization to us when we most needed it, and in the six weeks since my induction as

president, you and I have made, with the help of others, good headway on changing some of the

ways we do things here at our synagogue for the better. G-D speed to you, Susie, and the boys. To

paraphrase "next year in the land of Israel".

Everyone have a great summer and remember we are here for you. Best wishes,

Victor Shernoff President

How do I Send a Mitzvah-Gram?

Here are 4 simple steps to do this:

1 Print out the Mitzvah-Gram page from the current HaYom newsletter with the list of

people celebrating a birthday or anniversary in September.

2 Circle the names of all those people to whom you would like to send a Happy Birthday or

Happy Anniversary greeting.

3 Mail or deliver your list, along with your check made out to Agudath Achim Sisterhood

for $.50 for each circled name, to Barbara Abrams, 24 Raindrop Lane, Bluffton, S.C. 29909.

4 Make sure to include your name(s) the way you want it (them) listed.

In order for your birthday and anniversary greetings to be delivered in a timely

manner, everyone needs to turn in September’s Mitzvah-Gram sheets by the 15th

of August.

If you have any questions about this project, please contact me at [email protected], or at

(843) 705-3723 of (843) 290-3995.

Thanks to everyone for participating in this exciting program.

Gale Hirsh, Acting Sisterhood President
