AUTHOR: Kenneth FramptonCritical Regionalism is an architecture approach emerged to the 20 th century which rejects the whimsical individualism and ornamentation of Post-modernism architecture. This architecture approach make great effort to counter the placelessness and lack of identity of International style. It seek to provide an architecture rooted in the modern tradition, but tied to geographical and culture context. Based on “Toward a Critical Regionalism” by Kenneth Frampton. It provide 6 points for architecture’s resistance on how to revive old civilization and take part in universal civilization.

Based on the fifth point, “Culture versus Nature”. It mentioned that Critical regionalism necessarily involves a more directly dialectic relation with nature, more than abstract, formal traditions of modern avant-garde architecture allow, which mean the removal of topography is a gesture of the universal technique resulting condition of placelessness and lack of identity. So, it is important that we preserve the landscape and associate with the local culture to create a building structure which is able to create resonance with the nature environment in order to create meaning and sense of attachment to the site.

One of the example in Malaysia, the Deck House located in Janda Baik which sitting on the terrain with minimum interference of the existing slope. The Choo Gim Wah architect integrated the concept of Traditional Malay House (vernacular architecture) with modern materials into the contemporary building structure which create a harmony relationship and architectural value of the contemporary building with the tropical climate and context environment.

In my opinion, preserved an attitude of neutrality from the point stated from the author. Critical regionalism is an important approach that revive the relationship between human, building, culture and landscape. But not every building and site are able to apply the same approach. The application of idea of critical regionalism should be a more flexible approach. Besides, as an architect we should analyze the local characteristics and reinterpret it with contemporary terms, rather than just adapting the traditions directly.
