Volume 13, Number 6 THE MESSENGER
Dear Cathedral Family,
Two weeks have passed, as I write this, since the
consecration weekend when James Russell Kendrick was
ordained as our fourth bishop and welcomed to his Cathedral and
seated in his cathedra, or chair. I am still processing everything
that happened that week—from preparations here at the
Cathedral and down the street at Expo Hall, to the celebration
here on Friday evening, to the consecration on Saturday,
followed by the parade down Church Street and the reception
here, and then Sunday’s seating of the bishop and Bishop
Kendrick’s first occasion to preach, teach, and celebrate
Eucharist here at his Cathedral.
Mental movies of these moments continue to play in my
head, sleeping and waking. These are beautiful images—joyful,
grace-filled, and fun—and you are all in them, sharing with our
diocese and the whole Church the tremendous gift of gracious
hospitality that God has given you. It was a glorious time. I
was—and am—so proud, so awed, by all the Cathedral Family
did, by your open-handed and open-hearted giving and your hard
work. As I said that Sunday, I love you so much.
The whole consecration weekend was a truly miraculous
event: the Cathedral Family offered so much, and the grace of
God created so much more from that offering. Bishop Kendrick
told us in his July 26 sermon to “expect a miracle,” reminding us
that our whole life here at Christ Church Cathedral has been,
truly, miraculous. We have been, I believe, genuinely
transformed in our life together, made into a new creation.
Even as we appreciate the moving of God’s grace in our life
as the Cathedral, we should not lose sight of how much energy
and effort was expended by so many people in getting things
done. You will see some details of magnitude in the “By the
Numbers” section on page 9 of this The Messenger. You will
also find a listing of the many, many individuals and
organizations that contributed to the various events of the
weekend. The participation of people from places throughout the
diocese made apparent in a new way the nature of a cathedral of
and for the whole diocese. This reality will be carried forward
into the next stages of our growth into mission and ministry.
What is next?
What is the future into
which God calls us?
We will continue
living the miracle of
our life together. We
will seek Christ and
serve Him. We will
join our Bishop
Russell in seeking new
life and hope in our
diocese, as we support
him in his ministry.
We will grow into the
next chapter of our life
as the Cathedral
church of our diocese.
In the weeks and
months ahead, we will
be listening for guidance, discerning how the Holy Spirit is
moving among us. As I said in my sermon on August 2, this is a
time for us to reflect on what has happened, to acknowledge
God’s grace, and to ask ourselves two questions: 1.) What does
God want us to do now? And 2.) How do we need to change in
order to do it?
The coming weeks and months will bring new opportunities
for us, and we will begin to see the shape of our future unfold.
Therefore it is especially important, it is imperative, that we
breathe and listen, that we seek God’s guidance in scripture and
prayer, and that we attend to what our hearts tell us and what we
hear in the needs of the world in which we live. We are on the
threshold leading out into the world to be about the work that
God has in store for us and that God will empower us to do.
Look around, listen, and pray.
Faithfully,
The Very Reverend Beverly F. Gibson, Ph.D., Dean

A Message fro m the Cano n Pastor
What a month it has been! Through all
the planning leading up to the consecration
weekend, people came forward to help in
many different ways. Thank you for your
help. Thank you all, also, for your prayers. I
give thanks for this Cathedral family, for
helping to make the consecration weekend a
successful endeavor.
Along with helping to play host for the
weekend, two of my responsibilities for the
consecration service dealt with youth in the
service. Not only did Bishop Kendrick want
to have events just for the youth of the
diocese, like those at Wilmer Hall and
Beckwith, he wanted an active and visible
showing of the youth in his consecration
service. There were four youth, ranging
from eighth to twelfth graders, from
churches in Dothan, Fairhope, Mobile, and
Panama City who lead the litany. The litany
is the “prayers of the people” part of the
service, where our prayers range from
praying for the new bishop’s family to the
needs of our communities and the world.
Typically, this is sung or chanted, but for our
service the diocesan youth led by reading the
prayers.
For the acolytes, we used twenty youth,
ranging from eighth to twelfth graders. We
had two flag bearers, six crucifers, and
twelve torch bearers. The acolytes were
from St. Luke’s, Mobile; St. Paul’s, Foley;
St. Thomas, Greenville; Good Shepherd,
Mobile; Nativity, Dothan; Holy Nativity,
Panama City; Holy Cross, Pensacola; St.
Mary’s, Andalusia; Christ Church Cathedral,
Mobile; St. Christopher’s, Pensacola; and
All Saints, Mobile. It was great to see all of
the acolytes dressed in their churches’
vestments, using their crosses and torches, as
it helped to show how similar, and yet how
diverse, we are as a diocese. I give thanks
that I had a co-chair for the acolytes. Mr.
Mike Harding is the acolyte master at Holy
Nativity, Panama City. Mike and I got along
great, and I really appreciated his
perspective and his patience with the youth!
On Friday, there were five rehearsals in
Expo Hall, including one for the litanists and
one for the acolytes. The youth were really
excited to be a part of the service, but I do
not think it really registered with them just
how big an event this service would be until
the great procession into Expo Hall on
Saturday. There were really four separate
processions, which made one large entrance.
The twenty acolytes were placed throughout
the processions. During the service, there
was a gospel procession. For the procession
out, our Cathedral acolytes (Janie Chow,
Ellie Grehan, and Charlie Weeks) led the
bishops out of Expo Hall and along with the
Excelsior Band, which led the congregation
to the Cathedral for the reception.
There were many parts that had to come
together for this service, and I give thanks to
God that things did flow nicely. There is no
doubt in my mind that the youth who were a
part of this service will long remember July
25, 2015.
As we begin another program year here
at the Cathedral, I hope that our youth will
continue to participate in Christian
formation and EYC. Later this month, our
youth will attend the Jonathan Myrick
Daniels Pilgrimage (Hayneville, AL) on
August 15. There will be a welcome back
event at Beckwith later in the month.
Have a great August everyone, and I
hope to see you at church!
Blessings,
The Reverend Canon Daniel A. Wagner
Canon Pastor

Dear Friends,
Mary said “yes” to God. The
church celebrates the feast day of St.
Mary the Virgin on August 15, and
while not every parish has a special
service that day, Mary’s “yes” is
always with us and is manifested
throughout all of Christendom. Her
eternal “yes” to God’s call is a
foundation-stone for the story of
salvation. The musicians of our
Diocesan Choir said “yes” not so many
months ago when the call for singers
was sent out. These musicians, from
parishes large and small, took a leap of
faith and stood up to the challenge of
creating music for one of the most
important moments for our diocese in
recent memory.
There are so many people to thank.
First, I would thank God for the
blessings we all received through these
events. Of course, I am also proud of
and grateful for our Cathedral clergy
and staff who worked so hard to make
the consecration a reality. My wife (our
Assistant Choirmaster), Katie Powell,
did a marvelous job directing the
Diocesan Choir in rehearsal and
service. Her expertise in voice and
choral matters were integral parts of the
choir’s success. She, along with
Stephanie Hopper, assisted me greatly
in preparing the mountain of music,
paperwork, and correspondence
necessary for this event. Our Cathedral
Choir worked tirelessly through the
summer in rehearsals here at the church
to prepare for the consecration and the
seating of our bishop. Normally, the
choir has the summer off, but they
understood the importance of these
events, and their role as a Cathedral
Choir not just in name but in action.
Our choir, worked harder for this event
than for just about anything else we’ve
done, and I am very grateful for that.
THANK YOU to all the members
of our Diocesan Choir! So many
parishes sent choir members to sing for
the consecration service. All of those
people made a priceless contribution to
the music. Even though there is no way
I could communicate with each one of
them individually, each and every one
of them is an appreciated and valued
member of our Diocesan Choir.
Because they came to rehearsals,
listened to rehearsal learning
recordings, and sang beautifully, we
were able to have beautiful choral
music worthy of the great occasion.
Our Diocesan Children’s Choir did
a wonderful job also! I was so proud to
see a new generation of singers join us
to enhance our music. At the very
moment of the consecration prayer they
sang Veni Sancte Spiritus (Come Holy
Spirit). How fitting that our youth
should give voice to our prayers at this
solemn and joyous moment! It is my
hope that they will remember their role
in the service for years to come. I hope
they know how appreciated they are.
Many thanks to the organists for
our ceremony—Jeff Clearman (All
Saints, Mobile), Kevin Davis (Trinity,
Mobile), and Jason Beasley (St.
Stephen’s, Brewton)—for playing so
wonderfully and contributing to the
prayerful spirit of our liturgy. Special
thanks also go to Treece Efird, Ken
Karadin, and all the people of Christ
Church, Pensacola, for hosting our
Diocesan Choir rehearsal there on July
11.
There are so many people and
organizations to thank—too many to
list here. Thank you to all involved in
the consecration music. You have
blessed the people of this Diocese. You
have participated in the eternal love of
God expressed through music.
As all of the musicians in the
Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast “set
their hands to the plow” as the 2015/16
season approaches, it is my prayer that
all of us will continue to touch lives
through music. It is with great hope for
our future as a diocese that I pray we
will stand on the shoulders of our
accomplishments at the consecration
Eucharist to infuse new life into our
music. Ultimately, God creates what is
good, and God was with us at the
consecration. However, we said “yes”
and did the work necessary to make
beautiful music. I hope we will all
continue to say “yes.”

THE ORDINATION AND CONSECRATION OF
THE REVEREND JAMES RUSSELL KENDRICK
AS IV BISHOP OF THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF THE CENTRAL GULF COAST
FRIDAY, JULY 24 THROUGH SUNDAY, JULY 26, 2015
The photographs in this newsletter were taken by Cindy McCrory/Blueroom Photography; Robbie Runderson; and Richard Schori.
All photos taken during the consecration weekend are available on the Cathedral website.
What a Celebration it was!
The Christ Church Cathedral Family has been engaged with the bishop
search process since November 2013. The search and transition processes
have drawn to a close, and we are now rejoicing in the culmination of that
work. We welcome Russell and Robin and their family as the newest
members of our Cathedral Family in the diocese.
We would be remiss if we did not take time to say thank you to every
member of the Cathedral Family—from Harris Rendfrey, whose baptismal
water was added to the font at the consecration, to our tried and true
leadership who stepped up time and again with gifts of time and talent in
addition to generous financial support.
Please enjoy this pictorial tour of the weekend. All of the galleries are
available on our website: www.christchurchcathedralmobile.org.
Planning for the myriad events began months ago, but we knew the
weekend was here when the Flower Guild, under the able leadership of
Robbie Lynn Irvine, arrived bright an early on Thursday, and the St. Paul’s, Mobile, Flower Guild Team worked their
magic in our Chapter House.
The combined flower guilds of Christ Church Cathedral, including Perrin Drew, Happy Grehan, Elizabeth
Harrison, Judy Henson, Cammie Israel, Ann Luce, Barbara Mitchell, Kay Whiting; and St. Paul’s, Mobile, including
Judy Campbell, Carol McMurphy, Pam Moore, Patti Parnell, Julie Sirmon did a beautiful job.
FRIDAY, JULY 24
Before the first guest arrived on Friday morning, our ECW leadership had planned each event down to the last
crumb. Thank you to: Lucy and David Brady, Carolyn Eichold, Julie McClelland, and Rosemarie McClure.

shown to all has been a marvel of graciousness and
organization. Thank you for your care and calm! May your
ministry continue to be a rich blessing

What a wonderful event. What a wonderful Cathedral we
have! Philip and I just burst with pride every time we heard one
of the visiting bishops mention what a good time they were
having. The presiding bishop said it had been one of the most
relaxing and organized visits that she had ever had. Thanks to
you and your committees for doing such a great task for the
Diocese of The Central Gulf Coast. Now everyone knows
where we are!!!! Please send this to whoever needs to know
what an outstanding job was done.
We love you all.
Philip and Kathy Duncan
Beverly,
Again a note of thanks for the wonderful consecration
event. Please extend our gratitude to all of the staff, vestry, and
membership. It was a day on which the meaning of Cathedral
was drawn into clearer light. Christ’s continued blessing on the
ministry through you all.
God’s Love,
John Riggin
Rector, St. Paul’s, Mobile
Dear Beverly,
Many thanks to you for allowing me to baptize our
grandson this past Sunday at Christ Church Cathedral. I am
suspecting that this baptism “put the red on the caboose” with
Leigh and Fred having children, but we never know!
I have appreciated the warm manner in which I have been
allowed to function sacramentally for my family at Christ
Church. Your gracious welcome has been much-appreciated.
I hope that the Bishop’s consecration on Friday goes well
and that you are able to catch your breath a bit afterwards. I
hope, too, that some of your colleagues in the Diocese of the
Central Gulf Coast come to an awareness that Christ Church is
their cathedral, as well.
I look forward to the time when we are more fully present
in the Mobile area.

The Cathedral is the spiritual center of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. The Cathedral is a dynamic and evolving church that serves
as a liturgical, educational, and pastoral center for Diocesan life. It serves as a visible symbol of unity and promotes growth, hope, and a
deepening trust in the Lord. The Cathedral is a place where the Gospel of Jesus Christ will be faithfully preached and responded to, and it
will model new concepts and ideas for education, evangelism, and outreach to which the Gospel calls us.
