21. SAFETY JOHN DROZD, 315-772-3022 BACK TO SCHOOL: It’s back to school and that means… Kids, Kids, and more Kids on the roads; riding, walking, or busing to school. Parents, remind your children to only cross the street at corners, never attempt to walk into a street between two parked cars. Drivers, remember to slow down in neighborhoods and school zones, take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.

BACKPACKS: Don’t overstuff a backpack; it should weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of your child’s body weight. Remind your child to use both straps on the backpack.

BUS SAFETY: Go to the bus stop with your child to teach them the proper way to get on and off the bus. Make sure your children stand six feet away from the curb. If your child and you need to cross the street in front of the bus, you always should be able to see the bus driver, and the bus driver always should be able to see you.
